Edit : I find it important that people are not mislead by the post. Remember that the main point of the thread is about their description aka text, and not how they visually look. I was checking out what's new on Reddit and saw a post about a webtoon author describing... the beauty of woman. If you've read a bit of Chinese novels around here, you know what I'm talking about. ...jade-like skin. ...skin white as snow. ...almond shaped eyes. You get the point. Now I have not actually read the webtoon below (The Emperor's Companion) but seeing the post made me check out Chapter 15 to see with my own, ahem... pair of eyes... and as you can read the text in the image, it is quite the wholesome take on how certain authors describe women. Such description, much wow! Mind you I'm not disrespecting the style of description. I just love it when people get up in arms just to make fun or even lambast authors. The comments are a, how shall I say... such a read. Anyways I hope to see some fun replies!
It is not r/menwritingwomen/ for nothing lol. You gotta understand that over the top descriptions will always tick some people off.
Think of it like this. They very rarely actually describe women, usually when they're introduced (which depending on the novel can be often or rarely), so on average there are very few descriptions every few chapters, so the ones they do are over the top ones
Idk why I get so bothered reading cn authors describing women with the term 'jade like skin' I think that means they have no visible pores? So they'll probably look like walking Instagram filters? I even read in one novel where the author said the female lead's skin looked white and transparent and if you looked closely you could even see a very shallow layer of capillaries...
I.... dont see the problem here? In fact, the character in the image is a nice change from the usually "jade-like" white-as skin and stick thin bodies and shit. Kinda surprising considering the obsession of some asian cultures with wanting to be white af as their ideal.
the hair is not even black it is brown and the red eyes isn't deep her clothes are. her eyes is just red her hair is brown and her skin leans more to mocha than coffee.
To be honest i most of the time skip them after i read their name, cause it keeps repeating again and again about their fairy like beauty,so i relate that its a tad annoying, what about average looking girls,?are they monster then? I find these description weird but its how they view women, cant argue against that
many asians actually like light brown colored skin than white and the ones thinking that white is better are mostly those from countries almost full of light brown skin toned population since it's rare (some thinks it's beautiful because it's rare).
Nothing wrong with her looks. Just the fact the style of description can trigger some people. Here's another thread about this : https://forum.novelupdates.com/threads/weird-descriptions-of-beauty-on-chinese-novels.60645/ Also check out the small blue link to the Reddit post, the replies there should clue you in. Actually lemme copy paste it : https://www.reddit.com/r/menwriting..._could_bewitch_anyone_with_just_a_glance_the/
At least she has pretty natural proportions drawn... no too big boobs or too small waist. The picture actually looks normal (a compliment)
that's why novels are better than comics everything is left to your imagination when the description is presented you will only remember the name of the character and a vague image then proceed to focus on the outline of the story. i sometimes even forgot the characters name.
Eh, if you read romantic novellas of western authors or something like historical porn of Christopher Robin Nicole and such (Lord of Golden Fan = porn Shogun and also made me homophobe at six or seven years old) then you will have pretty similar descriptions.
She's not even that pretty. Imo, I don't agree with describing a characters looks in overt details. Does it deserve a mention? Sure it does, but you don't need to go to such lengths to describe it. Especially when it comes to Comics, Webtoons, or Manga, lol. In the first place, if that girl is as beautiful as the author mentions she is then we wouldn't need a description, just looking at her would suffice.
IMO that just the writing style of author. I found that while Japanese author tend to describe their characters (female and male, even futa) with straightforward characteristics, Chinese author tend to make metaphorical descriptions. I love both straightforward and metaphorical descriptions, because look at monogatari series, most of the characters activities are exaggerated. And straightforward descriptions make it easier for us to imagine quickly
Yeah. +1 to that. CN novels tend to be very flowery, metaphorical and sometimes exaggerated. I think it's just a cultural language thing maybe?. Like they'll die if they're straightforward XD
