I'm a soldier, I can literally sleep standing up holding a rifle and a 10kg backpack...

i sleep on the ground atop a couple thick blankets and i cannot stand mattresses anymore, on a soft bed my body sinks and the sunk part feels cramped and hot
i like how on the floor i can tumble around and there is no sound or vibration, i exercise and the soreness is smaller than when i used to slept on a bed
also, before sleeping i rub my feet together so they warm up

I know nothing about Japanese futon/tatami culture but for years I slept in basically a slight amount of padding on the floor as it was the only way I could be comfortable. Now I'm getting older so I use a cot...

The old Japanese Pillows (hard and hollow) that act more as neck supports are supposed to be really good for your posture if you grew up using them.
The futons in Japan are also often used for saving space. Extra bedding for a guest... cramped city apartments. Fold up that futon into a storage cabinet.
Japanese people are polite, making them seem nice. Also, due to low immigration, they are more unified: Everyone is relatively on the same cultural page. Pros and cons to all this...

Futons are only nice on Tatami floors, because they’re softer, and aren’t as cold feeling. Most of the newer apartments in Japan just have normal floors and beds tho.

I know nothing about Japanese sleep culture, but I like sleeping on the ground personally. The best thing I ever slept on, however, was actually a dog bed. One of those fluffy, square things with a low edge in stuffed fluff fabric. I found that if it was exactly the right size and I curled up on the side, it would support my neck and feet a bit and it's just the ultimate foetus position, taking away the gravity strain I never knew was a thing. The flooring being hard was not a bad thing at all in my experience, I just added a mat so it wouldn't be cold.

When I have my own place, I'm throwing out the bed. I'll make myself the perfect-sized custom dog basket and sleep like a babe.
