Most translated, fantasy novels here are power fantasies and/or wish fulfillment novels, and I rarely ever get to read novels here that are not like that. So, does anybody here have any good recommendations for fantasy novels that are not wish fulfillment or power fantasies?... I do not have any specific requirements and conditions, as long as it has a western fantasy setting. Though, I would really like it if it is a grimdark or low fantasy...
aren't most stories just that? think about it ... that said Destroyer of Ice and fire doesn't seem to be too bad and it made me laugh till I teared up at one point ...
Yes, it is a pretty good novel, arguably the best novel in Royal Road Legends. I lready read it, though...
A lot of fantasy novels here are too scared to actually place proper setbacks for the protagonist(s) and characters, they also seem to avoid character deaths and events that would sadden the reader. They tend to focus on positivity and "good things." That would have been okay, but if the novel only has those, then it is clear wish fulfillment. I'm not saying it is bad, but it kind of gets stale...
The first few volumes of Hai to Gensou no Grimgar are good. The main character certainly has to painstakingly earn every victory and there's plenty of setbacks and losses along the way, The last few volumes get weird though, so maybe the author tried to continue the story beyond his level of competence.

Ive almost forgotten But have you read “forgotten conqueror” ? For RRL. It’s used super popular but it doesn’t update often so it’s kinda been fazing in and out of popularity every time it updates... Edit: ah wait, does this count as wish fulfilment? I mean the mc is op but he’s not exactly a character I would want to be cause his past was kinda f-ed. Ah whatever, it’s a good novel, check it out if you want.

Tensei Shoujo no Rirekisho - MC is in a magic world, but has no magic. Only modern knowledge. They also start out as a poor peasant and it takes them years just to do get people to do basic agriculture reform. So lots of road blocks for the MC.
