Also - I'm taking the stand that the whole family sucks until proven otherwise because since she seemed to attract the notice of the Black Knight's attention her family seemed to have sped up the plan to kill her. She's still at the hinting tourney when a bunch of cloaked guys in black tried to kill her. The Black Knight notices them and slaughters them.

From chapter 2 translation and the raws that would be correct. It's the Black Knight and the present timeline she presents him with a black and white tassel that seemed to calm down something in him. I dunno what but it eased his suffering.

Nobles are power/honor first, a child is a posession to use to further their ends, a daughter primarially to marry of for alliances. If the family is better served with the kids death, you are having a funeral.

But there are also ALOT of horrible fathers, and bigots who value things like bloodlines. If she was a street urchin, then her mother was definitely not a noble, and likelt either a maid he (or his wife) fired or a prostitute he frequented, he could easily see her mothers blood as a taint leaving her inferior and not worthy of love or affection. Do you have any idea how many slave owners knocker up their female slaves, and still treated the kid as their property to abuse instead of as their child...

She is almost certainly there to cover up a secret that could end the family, and as long as she is alive and not under their thumb there is a chance she could reveal it. The problem is he needs to either marry her off, or at least try to, if not it will give rise to suspicion that could lead to their doom. Any sign she is breaking free, or going g to leave will need to be responded to with her death, as a death that can not be waved away is less risky then her, and one that could be waved away/explained is without risk.

I read the raws available on newtoki up to chapter 17. To clear up a few things because there seems to be some confusion, OG Karina is actually dead.

MC was brought in from the streets to cover up the fact that Karina died from the deadly stone disease mentioned in chapter one. Because the disease could ruin the reputation and influence of noble families, the dad covered up Karina's death by bringing in his illegitimate daughter from the streets and having Adele take Karina's place. ML also has the disease. MC's tassel seemed to help in some way and he was very curious about it but there isn't an explanation yet because no one knows much about the cause or cure for the disease.

ML knows of the abuse MC is suffering from and asks Adele to marry him. He says he'll protect her but she turns him down. For one, she questions whether she'll be safe even if she avoids the carriage incident. Second, she doesn't want to shoulder the name of Karina and doesn't want to be shackled by it.

In the original timeline, it is speculated the father has MC killed off before she gets married for a few reasons.
1. He had a new legitimate daughter. Either mother is pregnant now or will be soon
2. Once Adele is married off, she would no longer be directly under the family's influence and thus harder to manipulate for their uses.
3. Adele also knows the truth of Karina and is simply an unneeded loose end. Her death could be written off quite easily and the family can focus on the legitimate daughter.

Just based on the manhwa, I don't think it's 100% confirmed that the father had her killed. It could easily be the mother and could make more sense emotionally considering the mother is behind most of the physical abuse towards Adele and holds the most resentment/anger towards the illegitimate child of her husband. The mother slaps MC multiple times, the last time she did so, MC spoke up. MC said the mother is the ugly one and that she's taking out her anger on MC because she can't express her resentment to the one at fault (MC's father).

The scumbag father is more emotionally and verbally abusive though he did throw something (either a glass or vase) near MC during the hunt in his tent. He never praised her, basically belittled everything she did and found her lacking when she tried her best to study. He would even grimace whenever she called him father. First son, green haired guy was just cold and ignored MC. Second son, brown haired mage bullied MC, no doubt made worse by the fact no one cared about the bullying.

In chapter 17 ML has breakfast with the family and basically ignores everyone else but Karina. The mother tries to ask why he's there and becomes increasingly furious. Eventually, she gets to say her piece, calling him rude and asking why he's at their house so early. He explains that whether or not he's being courteous is determined by him (ML). Grand Duke vs Duke. He says he's there to propose again but gets rejected by MC at the table. I'm assuming he did this to show MC he's serious and to hopefully protect MC from further abuse by showing the family he is interested in her.
