English novel I ready in 3rd or 4th grade.
    What I remember:
    * the main character is a boy
    * He has a pet crow named Zeus
    * There's a scene in the book when he's sitting under a willow tree with a (female) friend while eating peanut butter and jam sandwichs
    * his baby sister dies from suffocation because her neck was too weak or something to move and so when the blanket accident covered her face, she suffocated to death

    Edit:
I found the word, the mc's younger sister died of torticollis.
The novels that my teacher read to the class at the time were: Hatchet, Bridge to Terabithia, Holes and Tuck Everlasting so the novel was probably published before the 2000s.

It might be The summer of Crow but I'm not too sure since a summary of the novel doesn't come up.

My mother had me listen to the audio book of Bloody Mary (or something) when I was about that age. I don't think she realized how cruel and vulgar the book was. It was about a girl disguising as a boy to be a sailor/pirate. Luckily, I was too young to understand the threats and implications made by the sailors about her or women in general.

That audio book got returned to the library real quick.

Probably, but I was like 10 years old back then.

Hahaha, my class teacher made us read Hatchet by Gary Paulsen right afterwards which is strange since it's banned in many schools.
"Hatchet by Gary Paulsen -- Banned or challenged for being “inappropriate to the target audience” and its “sexual content, violence and horror.” Hatchet “was banned in some schools because the description of injury and trauma was apparently too well written."
And to boot, it's an young adult book so idk what the hell my teacher was thinking at the time, reading it to children that were around half the recommended age. lol

But now that I'm older, I want to read them again. I was a sickly kid growing up so I missed out on about 70% of the novels that were read in my class. But from 30% of the novels that I remember, it sounded really interesting. I found the novel hatchet due to searching on the web things like "Book about aeroplane crash boy serving with an axe" and I found it but I can't find this novel.

    Please do not go off-topic.

Hatchet was scary! The pilot has a heart attack, the kid barely survives, gets so distraught he throws(?) the mini hatchet hanging from his neck, which scares a porcupine, the kid ends up getting stabbed by the porcupine's needles and has to take them out (I think).

All that happened in the first hour or so inside the book.

Then that guy, after experiencing so much more difficulties too, decides to do the whole thing over again (on a new island) in the 2nd book so they can film it. Sort of like a wilderness survival documentary.

Damn I think my fifth grade teacher made us read that and had us watch the film. Gotta say maybe I was also too young to understand it or I alwyas end up sleeping(maybe) when they’re reading it in class idk but I did not pick up any of those violence and horrors. Except in the film when he went back to the jet/plane he saw
The dead pilot w his eye hanging out from his socket I think there was also fish nibbling it?????? Gahhhhh :blobdizzy::blobsob::blobsob::blobsob::sweating_profusely:
now that’s what should be called “violence and horror :blob_teary:

I remember the part where the plane crashed in a lake and the mc had to swim out or something, then he found some berries and made a bow using the hatchet -I missed out on some parts because I had to go the doctors- then a natural disaster happened where he lost everything -I got sick for a few days- My class finished the book. :blobcry:

In a forum of Asian translated novels. You may as well ask on Reddit.

I'm not claiming it's "not allowed" to be here. What I'm trying to express is that NU is a directory for translated Asian novels and this is their affiliated forum. For an affiliated forum, keeping in mind what brings members here and therefore those that visit 'I'm Looking For...' to help others, the probability of you figuring out a pure English novel is low. Reasonably, those that visit to help would first assume this is a relevant-to-site search, i.e. translated Asian novels. Asking for clarification... I believe should be acceptable? At the end of the day, I merely mentioned what would probably be more beneficial to your search... Is your aggressiveness and attack necessary?

    Hmm, that doesn't sound like the one you remember from what I could find;
    https://rowepub.com/product/the-summer-of-the-crow/
The reviews name the crow in the book as Blackie, not Zeus

But, good luck, hope you find the right one some day.

@Chilli_Chiia Tone down your aggression. You asked for help, someone gave a suggestion.

Dumb thread but I will add one thing.
Just because the book was in English doesn't make it an English novel.
I agree with the sensible person that you attacked.
Try another website, you are definitely in the wrong place.
    Cheers!
P.S. No need to reply, you are on my ignore list

I believe the book you are looking for could be "The Naming of Tishkin Silk" by Glenda Millard.
