Discussion why do some people name their chapters on a cliffhnger at the end?

For example: Chapter name 'Fight me if you dare!', With part of the ending paragraph- 'I wonder if you dare fight me in a duel?'

I don't know what about this annoys me but it does. lots.

It’s like that with ink and paper books too. Some times it’s just the chapter number. Sometimes is a short name. Sometimes it’s just the name of the character’s point of view. At the end of the day, only the author can answer that question.

 

Because it's the highlight of the chapter?

 

Because If you named the chapter "I don't want to fight you,bye." and at the end of the chapter is 'I wonder if you dare fight me in a duel?' that would be confusing. lol. Just my thought though.

To get more readers.

I understand how you feel when the chapter title completely spoils the chapter like that. However, I feel like this happens because what the chapter title says is the main point of the chapter in question. For example, if the chapter is about a battle then the chapter title should be "Battle" and not "Discussion between characters". The other issue with chapter titles is that most web novels have incredibly short chapters where not much actually happens so they can't give non-spoiler chapter titles without it not making any sense. If the entire chapter is just one set of dialogue between characters it's hard to make a decent non-spoiler title for it.

 

If you go on the Chinese novel site, you'll see some authors name their chapters and also put a tiny summary/synopsis for the chapter. It's because readers need to decide whether to spend money on the chapter or not. An exciting title will attract more clicks. Not every author does this tho.

 

Silver Overlord does this too. The chapter title is all based on the last paragraph.

 

The more pressing question is: Why do most CN authors use spoilers as their chapter name?

How did that become a standard thing?

 

To highlight the content so that readers can see it.

 

I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't for the sole reason of making people re-read the same chapter and notice only AFTER they clicked that they already read it.
It's all for the views... Maybe.

Other than that, I think they don't even remember what nonsense they wrote in the chapter so they just check the last thing and pop a chapter name on it.
