Was it the World of Demons and Gods or something, that had rampant nationalism, racism and chauvinism all over it, before Qidian suddenly understood that shit was going to hit the fan in their Western market and replaced everything with countries "A, B, C" etc.

    this isn't necessarily racism though
America and Russia are THE two superpowers, so having other countries spies would be weird in a sense of more easily dealt with?
    Maybe Chinese spies?
But then again America and Russia are kind of rivals?

To be fair, there's likely also a pragmatic aspect to it...

Having them overcome Japan/Korea/China probably feels more of an achievement, because of their status in the real world. Japan/Korea are known as the more advanced countries in Asia, whereas more recently China has become a sort of economic giant.

Note that in older sports anime, the U.S. has also been used in a similar way.

If they had instead faced, say, Zimbabwe, then that probably would feel underwhelming for a few reasons. Not to make intentionally make a dig at Zimbabwe, but they're not particularly well-known and the most common trivia about Zimbabwe is how hyper-inflation happened there. Doesn't really do a good job at creating an image of a powerful foe.

    edit:
So what I'm saying is... it's just an easy way to establish the character roles through common knowledge and precedent pieces of work. That's why even authors that aren't necessarily racist would probably still rely on the tropes. Though when the author is actually very racist, it does show even more blatantly such as in World of Demon and Gods.

Well, Chinese sees their East Asia neighbors as rival too. As for the American case that would probably Capitalism vs communism all over again.

Come on. Just recently there was a Chernobyl show which portrayed russians as stupid and incompetent.
In games and movies russians also portrayed as inhuman scums.
In news and politics russians portrayed like they involved in everything(russian hackers, spies, etc).
And as a russian I would say that these things not only pretty rasist but also straightforward stereotypical lies.

First it just went over my head

    Then it started to ire

    Now there's realisation.

They are just catering to the audience.

Just like in Hollywood, Russia is made like the "Vodka villians".

But the real problem for me, is nationalism. Making Chinese look like the only perfect race, it's quite boring now so I just skim over if it's there

I had to drop several CN web novels because the racism was so over the top that it, what were supposed to be professional match, devolved into something where the global-level opponents had to become utter retards in order for the CN side could win. It's laughable that the author has to resort to screwing over the other side just because he can't figure out why his side is better?

Someone have to be the bad guy. Otherwise, we get novels where “Country A”, B, C... is a thing, to avoid offending the easily offended for surely no one is from a country called A. Still racist no doubt. Now it’s simply being “racist” to a made up country,

Just like it may be normal to make “Russians” the bad guy in America, it’s normal in China to make other Asian countries the bad guy.

'Cause for some people in Japan, that never really happened. They are the honorable Japanese, they would never do something like rape! Or change history books so they children know the "true" history.

The Japanese government deserves a lot of shit thrown at them for saying "It wasn't like that. -> It wasn't that bad. -> It didn't even happen." But putting that hate into your content is annoying imo. In China it's understandable, because you get brownie points with the government (or at least you don't get fucked by it) but in Korea the benefit is simply to externalize your hatred and depending on how well it's done, it can resonate with the consumers and get you more views.

But it's easy to see the world through that lense. "We are the good ones, they are the bad ones." Brings unity in a group at the cost of friction between groups, so it's understandable that people think that way. It's still annoying, though.

Tbh, in Asia no matter how advance the country is the government is not like is western where you can get away with dissing the government. So the trend is to find other countries to be made the negative, it is the countries that had more exposure in the country. Asian tv will probably show negative news more (minority ruins it for majority), you don’t really see England portrayed in negative light as much as America, in England it’s show terrorist are Arabs, and Russian spies but if you don’t watch world news, this is what you think. In England we can criticise the government and be fine. I wouldn’t do that in Vietnam or China. :blobawkward:
