So I've noticed that when in reading CN Novels, when a character that is on the heavier side of a scale is being introduced they would say their name (sometimes they wouldn't even) and just tell the MC to call them "fatty".

It didn't bother me at first but then as I read more CN Novels the one I mentioned above usually occurs.

It really bothers me as I find it really demeaning. So I'm wondering if it isn't as offensive in China? Maybe it's not as harsh in their language? :hmm:

In CNs, the MC's fat friend is added only for comic relief and to highlight the MC's virtues by way of contrast. In short, he exists solely to serve as an object of ridicule; if he cannot be made fun of, he wouldn't even exist.

Now, would you cruel enough to wipe out the poor fatty's existence just for the sake of political correctness? :sweating_profusely:

"Fatty" is not as offensive as you think, especially in ancient china

Comments on appearance are generally more common/accepted in Chinese culture by friends/family than western Culture tbh. In my own family, we have an uncle that we call “fat uncle” in Chinese.

If I were to put it into western perspective; it’s like calling one of your girlfriend’s like “hey bitch!”/“ugh you’re trash” Or being like “lol you little fatass”. It’s where some people can do it and it’s fine/some people don’t care while on the other hand if some stranger/someone not closer to you called you “hey bitch” or “lmaooo you’re trash”, it’s another story.

Well, I kind of understand your point of view. But I don't think the MC's friend, aka fatty, and also the MC means anything bad by it. Though that is the way it is written, I personally have never thought anything of it, as I just think of it a nickname. I mean, in both the real world and in games I have people calling me dofus or oogleeyes or somethin'. And besides, usually the fatty in the novel submit to the MC, and he also accept the nickname, so how about just letting it be?

It can be insulting to some culture, while it is a norm to the others

    Depends on circumstances..
Assume you go bald, and someone call you baldy.

I sure you not really angry getting making fun by your close friend or bro

But stranger try doing the same, you may got angry.

It's the same as black humor. It's not offensive till you try to find it offensive.
