So my boss said something today that took me by surprise.

She wondered if web novel/light novel fans weren't necessarily into animation or anime.

I was :blobsleepless: for a second there because I assumed we all ended up here down the deep dark path of shitty isekai anime > mediocre isekai manga > black tar heroin isekai light novel > MTLing syosetu

But is that not the case? Is there legitimately ANYONE here who isn't also an anime fan (or was an anime fan at some point of their dark history)? I mean prove me wrong.

usually I end up having read the manga or novel translation of adapted anime long before they're announced...

I don't usually watch anime, because I can read much faster and anime rarely get through a very large portion of a series anyway.

I'd say how I got into novels, but I don't remember... maybe an incomplete manga adaptation that had a novel source? I dunno. Probably wasn't from anime though, since I rarely watch any.

Doubtful. Lotta kids grew up watching Pokemon, Bleach, Naruto, whatever else was on Cartoon Network... Hm.. And then a lot get into manga and novels specifically because of Anime. That said, I do see Novel Updates (or specific novels) recommended on fanfic and novel subreddits quite often! So there should be some people who end up here just because they read english novels - web or otherwise. Not to mention it's possible to just walk into a bookstore and see light novels, right?

Quick question: do you consider hentai as proper form of anime?
If not then i might be one of those "rare" cases

I'm old so my progression was a little different. I was in high school when Ranma 1/2 started to make its way across the Pacific and into the US market. For me it was:

Late 90s dubbed anime > fansub anime > fan translated novels > MTLing syosetu

I grew up watching zoids and samurai x on Cartoon network and then one day when i was a teenager i decided to try and find those 2 shows again that ultimately led me to shows like berserk gundam 00 one piece naruto and gintama and such then when some of those shows ended i had to find the manga just to continue the story and eventually i wondered into the light novles and then here but now i haven't watched any anime or tv or read any manga in general for a few years now

Funny, I used to watch a lot of anime, but the more I became into novels the less I watched anime. I haven't watched any new anime in the last three years. I've only rewatched mahouka recently and that was because I was reading the novel, and because I have nothing to do due to covid. I just find animes are too long and a waste of time, reading the novel or manga/manwha is faster

personally this cat never think this cat is anime fans~ this cat just like to watch anime back then and later get bored thats all~
hmm reading > news > anime so nope don't call this cat anime fans~
there high probability this cat may read something but never interested to anime adaptation or watch anime as passerby then enjoy reading adaptation better~

I don't watch anime. Only recently I saw a season of one anime only because I really liked the novel.

    My timeline:
English novels → Anime → Web novel translations → English originals being RSS'd onto Ahoupdates → Learning Japanese with help of Google Translate et al & helping a bit with translating at Re:translations with Rei et al (but then developing a habit of not wanting to translate something I've read the raws of ahead of time... Which was hard because the stories were interesting and I read ahead on many projects and lost interest in translating them... SORRY) → Manga → Japanese TV shows tossed onto Youtube (Yamapi no Kiss Eigo et al) → Japanese Youtubers

I did grow up watching Pokemon, Digimon, Shaman King, Inuyasha, etc. Then maybe around 11 I started reading because of the required reading in school. Then I started watching stuff like Naruto and then got into fanfiction. I think on an anime website's forum someone listed a large list of webnovels and that's what got me started down this path.
