I was going to drop reading it but I decided to check reviews on the Naver blogs first. The novel seems to be very popular as the comments were mostly positive, with 4 to 5 stars, citing that it had good character development and plot. I’m not sure if this is completely accurate because I used mtl but it looks like the the shojo vibe is deceptive. Spoiler The actual story has pretty dark themes and leans more into political intrigue/survival fantasy with little romance. 1. Garden One reviewer said that “Garden” is a “custom of…. court battle” held by the nobles for those “around the age of 20 to elect a crown princess” while Chapter 13 of Spanish webtoon translation said that the Garden was a “diversion only meant to entertain” and chapter 10 implied that people have died before during the event. The allusion that the ML made early on to chess is literal. This is a death game. 2. The hierarchy is established by the fact that magic is exclusive to the nobility but the truth is that this magic weakens every once in a while. A person with specific features appears every generation (the Crow) and the nobility secretly sacrifices them to split up their power between themselves. ML is the crown prince and ironically also the new crow. Therefore, it has been agreed to set Cedar (guy FL has a crush on) and Cedar’s sister to watch ML. ML is supposed to have a child with Cedar’s sister to allow succession. They will then kill him when he reaches 20. This is the reason why he is hiding. The current king/his father forces him to wear a mask when in public so that no one can get impatient and kill him before he has an heir and it’s officially time to dispose of him. The mask can be seen in one of the novel covers. 3. Cedar and his sister betray them. There are a decent amount of plot twists and a lot of tropes are played with or subverted. 4. FL falls in love with Rose not Killian. When ML gets closer to his execution he tells her the truth and she of course feels betrayed. He decides to erase her memory so that she doesn’t feel sad because of him. She eventually realizes something is wrong because she misses both male and female forms of ML. 5. FL commits treason against the nobles to save ML. Many reviewers joked that the FL is like a cool hero and the ML is the heroine. 6. It’s a happy ending. Somebody said that one of their kids is seen in the extra stories. I think this child is also implied to be the next crow. There’s a little more romance there as the main story isn’t really a romance. It sounds pretty interesting so I hope that the novel gets translated. But apparently there was some controversy some time ago about “Living as the Emperor’s Fiancee” plagiarizing it.
Wow, I was going to drop this what with how negative the reactions on the first page of this thread was but this sounds really interesting. So it's not your typical shojou manga, it's literally a game of death! What a welcome twist, was not expecting that at all but it just made my impression of the story rocket. Hopefully, someone translates the novel.
