Learnt it a bit late but heard they have dropped 8 series as a result. Good news is most have been picked up by another scanlator. Just wanted to share since some might not be aware. Full info here: https://www.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/il28o8/sl_leviatan_hit_with_dmca_dropping_eight_series/
I lost count how many different translation groups picked up Volcanic age and a returners magic should be special and had to drop them because of DMCA
Man that’s not fair, chronicles of demon was like one of their best stories as with Survival We gotta support them for faster content, Idk if returner magic is good tho but still saddens me since it’s faster then novel
they can still translate them and post them elsewhere it's just not possible for them to post it on that site.
Uhh, to be fair, this stuff isn't actually supposed to be free. Personally, I read with the expectation that it's a preview. If I like it when I get cut off (i.e. series stops being updated because scanlator gets hit hard by real life), I'll buy the licensed copy.
Nope. It's still there but only accessible through their discord. Check out the link I posted for more info. Reaper haven't dropped any series, just made them discord-exclusive for now. Check link in OP. Among the dropped ones, I only liked Volcanic Age and Heavenly Demon, which, BTW, have a terrible history of being DMCA'ed, so I'm not really surprised. But it's less about fairness than exposure; the higher the no. of popular manhwa you host, the faster you are struck down (remember Meraki Scans?).
i really liked some of the translation they have this blows. I also always notice it's always the Korean translators being hit.
That fair a point but remember not a lot of series are not translated to English and people won't go read your crap if they don't understand it
Bcuz KR publishers hv exceedingly strict, even aggressive anti-piracy policies. They take their copyright protection and enforcement very seriously, always keeping an eye out for illegal TLs/scanlations. It's also the reason why KR raws are notoriously difficult to find. Kakaopage and some other KR raws platforms even require authentication with a Korean phone no./account for registration. Heck, IIRC, Munpia once region-blocked its site.
Well i guess fair enough for them. But they do realize that their preventing stuff from becoming more popular like the jp stuff?
They have their own official monetized English platforms for when they feel like catering to foreign readers. Ofc, not all of their popular series can be found there but then I figure their stuff sells so well in their region that they can afford to ignore the extra popularity brought by illegals TLs and foreign non-paying readers. P.S. I can't tell whether turning a blind eye to unauthorised TLs of their copyrighted manhwa increases their popularity in way that can be exploited to earn them money, but I def. know that preventing illegal scans, esp. in cases where said scans might be making money off it, is a sound approach.
Agreed, would be understandable to get DMCA'd if official translations were coming. On that note maybe NU should consider listing licensed series with links to the official translations. This site has become the go-to place to find just about anything novel-related and I feel it'll have to somehow or another 'go legit' or else be forced to go the way of all the other sites that got too big to ignore. If NU only lists 100% free translations then it effectively becomes a novel piracy search index, despite not hosting any of the content itself.
