I hate carpets with a passion. Also, I have dust allergies. I might consider a pretty rug that's easy to wash. Sadly, my parents love those huge, thick, ugly carpets (imagine a knock-off Persian carpet with way uglier colors and shapes) that are impossible to roll and carry without help, so my childhood was spent with a runny nose all day and I currently have trouble breathing quietly and getting enough air intake through my nose.

Carpets make a great filter for your dry sense of humor. At least that's why I think my carpets are so dusty week after week when I go out to shake the worst off.

If you live in an apartment on any floor but the ground one, carpet. If you have a wooden floor with a downstairs neighbor we can hear everything that goes on from arguments, private time between lovers, and every single little sound you make like footsteps or dropping something. Please use carpets when you're not on the ground floor, they dampen the sound and prevent it from travelling through the floor.

I love carpets, that velvety feel on your feet and they make the place look more comfortable

As someone who hates carpets, I gotta say - cork underlayment and laminate/spc/vinyl flooring on top will do the job. It's all in the underlayment. There are cheaper options as well, but cork seems to work best for sound-proofing.
