Recent, like in the last decade or so. Movies or TV series.
Is there such a thing? Something without too much (bad and obvious) cgi and tacky costumes.

As reference I enjoy old TVB series very much. Especially 1983’s Legend of the Condor Heroes.

Is it also called The Taoism Grandmaster/玄门大师?
The reviews are great and it's available for free on youtube.
But from what I can tell from episode 1, it's exactly what I'm trying to avoid. Bad cgi and ridiculous costumes.

I'm looking something more like All Men Are Brothers/Water Margin (2011).

I see. It is more similar to Chinese Paladin. The Longest Day in Chang'an should fit perfectly.
@Wu Jizun recommended it to me.
About CGI, I have a very low bar. The story is more important to me
You can try Xuan Yuan Sword 3. I had no problems with the CGI either but it might not impress you

Woah, that looks awesome. Very high production value. The reviews seem mixed, but I gonna watch it now. Thanks for the rec.

Didn't know the game has live-action adaptation.

Any reason you're only interested in recent stuff?

The Longest Day in Chang'an is the only one that comes to mind for me. The Viann Zhang version of Condor Heroes in 2014 was the last tolerable one for me. Subsequent to it, the CGI and costumes turned me off, as well. Personally, I don't like the direction on-screen wuxia adaptations have gone.

She played Li Mochou right? She was also in a very disappointing Royal Tramp remake.
The plot was very bad but she is so pretty that I didn't even care

Heaven Sword Dragon Saber 2019 wasn't too bad... They kept the old opening which is an absolute legend! Kathy Chow slays as Miejue and Lin Shen was amazing as Yang Xiao. Of the younger cast, I thought Zhao Min's actress did pretty well. The rest are up for debate...

Condor Heroes 2017 is watchable (well, at least the Michael Miu scenes...)

I hope, and they probably will, reuse the sets/costumes from The Last Day of Chang’an for other shows.
Feel free to recommend other post-2000 series you found outstanding.
I didn't watch much wuxia post-2000. Just caught a few episodes of Richie Ren's Chor Lau-heung, partly because I love the OP song, and a lot of episodes of Wind and Cloud.

It looks great. Quite a lot of wire-fu from what I can see. The cgi heavy scenes are unfortunate, but they don't look super bad.
From what I've read on spcnet, it seems a lot of HSDS adaptation are great. Except for the TVB's 2000 one.
I think it's because people legitimately love the storyline.
I've personally only watched the 80's TVB on with Tony Leung and the older Shaw Brothers' movies. edit: Almost forgot, the commercial failure with Jet Li and Sammo Hung. Love that one.

For some reason, I thought it's the old Anita Mui and Tony Leung's Cantonese song lol.

    I have to say this.
Your expectations for special effects are too unrealistic

I guess you misread my post.
I didn't say the 2019 adaptation looks like shit. I mean, I'm giving the series a try right now.
I'd like to believe most people would prefer practical effects than cgi. Not only in wuxias, but in tv shows and movies in general.
    What's so unrealistic about it?

The unrealistic part is that you are like someone going to watch a movie but looking for a comedy movie without comedy.
These "bad" effects are part and parcel of Chinese media.
It is both a cultural and a budget issue.
You have some Pixar alumni who are Chinese that have done great work in things like Monster Hunt but looking for great special effects in Chinese media is a fool's errand.
    You won't find any

I liked all the Jin Yong remakes that Yu Zheng didn't get all his hands on.
I really liked Detectives and Doctors - thought the all of the cast delivered on it.
The Vigilantes In Masks - surprisingly, I didn't find Wallace Huo such a bore, lol.
The Great Protector - While I felt Jia Qing and Wallace Huo lacked chemistry, I really enjoyed Jia Qing's performance (I am quite biased toward her, though)

Nothing else really comes to mind atm. I'll let you know if I remember any.
