I think a majority of this community have no idea how it works. Many here have delusions. Publishing is a low margin business. Profits are usually in the single digits. Traditional Publishers have resulted to Vanity Publishing( Charging authors to print their books). Websites like Qidian and Webtoons seem to be outliers with a non traditional model that seems to work. But that is a lie. Lezhin could not even pay their staff. Qidian and Webtoons seem to be exceptions with their numerous contests with large cash prizes but it is misleading. Both are owned by the Chinese equivalent of Microsoft in Tencent and the Korean equivalent of Google in Naver. So I ask you this, can you license from a company equivalent to Google when their novel division is simply like a toy to them? By the way, Softbank also publishes manga and light novel. I believe one of their imprint is called Mediacreative or MediaBunko or something. I am going to start licensing and publishing ebooks myself. It isn't as if you are licensing straight from the parent company with these massive corporations though, the individual divisions and subsidaries have their own bottom lines that has to be taken into account even if it still makes it a lot more complicated than licensing from an independent company or creator.
