So, I was watching the latest Todd in the Shadows video and about 7.5 min in he mentions a country song...as soon as he plays a short clip I realized it was basically that Chinese trope of the MC faceslapping a girl, who turned him down, with all his new awesomeness. And yeah, its even worse as a song. Especially since he deliberately lured her out 20 years later. Is it just me or did I miss a lot of these songs before I knew the concept? Anyone know some popular ones?
Most of the diss tracks I've heard have a different vibe, like I'm better than you, instead of the 'girl you missed a wonderful opportunity to be with me' in the above song and novels. I'm sure the concept has been around forever, but I can't remember seeing it in music. The closest is usually more vague songs about becoming famous while the classmates watch them on tv.
Pretty sure a good chunk of R&B and rap songs are full of lyrics shitting on an old flame after they finally became famous. I don't fuck with you is literally a song by big sean
Listen to warning shot by Eminem. It’s the #1 face-slapping diss track I’ve ever heard -and just for the context you could listen to obsessed by Mariah Carey
I understand, but both Obsessed/Warning Shot are exactly the opposite type of faceslapping that I meant in the OP, it's famous people sniping at each other. Same with Pusha T vs. Drake, etc.
Any "you left me, but now I'm doing much better than/without you" song... Blackpink's How You Like That, to sneak some kpop in (to be fair, the song could as well be a diss for their antis, I just took it the other way). There are too many of these songs that I can't be bothered to go look for them. You can be pretty sure any artist has done them.
Depending on the circumstances and their ages and similar, a guy face-slapping a woman is fair game if a woman can do the same to him!
