So I found a jar of ovolmatine(chocolate spread), which will expire in one week.

Not sure what to do with it, should I open it and finish it in one week, or just throw it away.

    What would you do?

Update: I decide to open it, there were liquid which seems like oil, I throw the oil and try eat one tea spoon of the spread, the taste is normal, sweet and crunchy. There's no way i can finish entire jar in a week and I place it in fridge.

Finish it, maybe get sick in a few days, and go on medical leave. It's what I would have done during my military service.

But there's still about a week left, so it should be fine, I think? Unless you bought it several months ago. So feel free to go on medical leave if you do in fact get sick after finishing it.

Buy a new one, then use the receipt to return this one , complaining about the date.
Anyway, with stuff like this it's not an 'expiration date' but a 'best before' and generally the longer the product lasts the more room it leaves you to go over it. You're likely to know it's gone bad by smell or taste before you reach the point of getting sick from it.

The important thing is the condition of it. Did you buy it, open it, have a taste and then forgotten for it for months? Or has is been just sitting there unopened all this time in a suitable place, and not under direct sunlight or high temperature? Give it a whiff to see if it is funky. Otherwise the date on top of food stuff is an approximation. It can last longer if well preserved.

You can likely take your time eating it. The BestBy/Exp dates are more of guidelines. If the jar has been stored properly (away from sunlight and not contaminated by other foods from using the same knife), you can eat it if it looks and tastes ok. With this type of shelf-stable product, the first ingredient that can turn is typically the oil, which can go rancid or sour-- but you will be able to tell.

If it is still un-opened, just take your time finishing it.
As long as it doesnt taste weird, its fine.

Processed food hardly ever goes bad as soon as the expiry/best before date passes. It's still good eat thanks to the stabilizers and other chemical additives. So I would guess you have more than a week. Maybe even a month or more. As long as it was stored properly in a fridge, I think eating it would be the best option. Second best option would be adding it in some kind of cooking/baking, like cookies, cakes. The heat should help remove anything harmful that may have started to set in. My personal belief is that food should only be thrown as a last resort when it has turned poison.

I agree with Oddmoonlight on this.

But more of, is it in the fridge or somewhere in 30° C or colder then its still good.
If its been heated by the sun or you are in a climate with more than 33°C then throw it away.

I mean if you like it, eat it. It's before the expiration date. If you don't like it and it has been just sitting there forever, toss it.

Eat it if you feel like it, but don't really force yourself. It's a spread that is about to expire, I'm pretty sure that the value of the product that you have long since purchased has fulfilled its value in your stomach over time.

Obviously, I don't want to get sick by eating them. It's better to throw them away.
