She doesn't have bitter memories anymore. She thinks that she shouldn't have fallen for a popular person like him. She remembers Valor's friend Simone who used to look at Valor the way Nivea looked at him.Simone also looked at Nivea the way she used to look at Eustace.He had hated Nivea for hanging around Valor. Nivea wonders why, now that the engagement is off, Valor is looking at her.She wonders if it's because of regret.(everyone is 'looking' at everyone here) •Nivea is reading a book about Vin Friet. Thierry and Vin Friet are finally on somewhat friendly terms. Both the countries have a common root. Ofcourse they weren't actually able to hear the convo between the two. •Valor wakes up and thinks that he is in a dream, because lately he has been projecting the after image of dream-Nivea whenever he woke up. The only difference was dream Nivea was from the past. Today he dreamt about their engagement, the time when he hadn't hated her so much yet. Nivea was pretty but was 'still' and 'lifeless' like a doll, so much so that she creeped him out. He didn't like her but he couldn't forget his courtesy ( but you did when you grew older) and helped Nivea when she slipped on her hem. He had grabbed her hand and asked her to be careful. She had slowly looked up at him and thanked him. He still didn't like her but was happy to see her lose her doll like countenance. He had led her to the back of the hall to sit with him quietly ( even if it was their engagement party they weren't really the main guests). He notices something wrong with her hem (MTL said 'chimatdan' but I have no idea what it means, I presume they are still talking about the hem though). She tries to stop him but he kneels down to fix her hem. Nivea is blushing, her ears are red and she has pinched her mouth like a little bird.Valor thinks she is cute and unknowingly smiles. The duchess arrives then and asks him to accompany her to meet the emperor. He gives his hand to Nivea asking her to come along with him, but the duchess stops him saying that the emperor is very busy and can't be allowed to see any flaw. With an ugly smiles she says that Nivea is clearly uncomfortable in her formal wear and should rest. Nivea politely nods along. She keeps looking at Valor as he walks away. Valor thinks that their relationship would have been different if the duchess hadn't arrive ( seriously I don't like Valor but his parents are far worse). He wants to go back to that night.He would have stayed by Nivea's side and talked about how tiresome all this was. He would have closed her ears with his own hands instead of listening to people gossip about her birth in that party. He knows that a subtle shift happened that day. He started to 'dislike' her but it was the day she fell in love. Fixing her hem was a meaningless act of kindness for him. He wants to ask dream Nivea why she fell in love with a person like him but knows that she won't answer. When he realises that Nivea in the library is real, he keeps quiet and just observes her. He looks at her fingers moving along the pages and her expression changing as she read the book. He is disappointed that she is reading so fast. She finishes her book and looks up. When she catches him looking, instead of being surprised she asks in a very indifferent tone (which frightens him) how long he has been awake. He answers that he only woke up a little while ago and didn't want to disturb her. She thanks him for his consideration but says that she has to leave. He notices that she is acting cold towards him naturally and not intentionally( like what did you expect). •Valor says that he can't leave as he had told everyone that he wouldn't attend the ball because he had work. As Nivea moves away to get another books he asks whether she likes reading. Nivea who used to hate him now feels nothing towards him. He asks her about what she is reading and she talks about the Joachims. Valor is devoted to his nation, especially because he fought in the battlefield but he agrees that Vin Friet has achieved a lot in a very short time compared to Thierry's long history. Nivea praises Joachim 10 and 11 ( Valor talked about some open secret regarding Joachim 11 which I didn't understand. But they don't really go into detail so maybe it isn't that important). Valor keeps following her and saying that he wants to help Nivea but she doesn't want to use the country's only duke as a librarian nor is she hoping to get help from him.She slips on her bandaged foot and Valor catches her She tenses up( even if she feels nothing for him now, she had still loved him for all these years).She tries to push him off and that's when Arendt arrives and helps her up. He smiles brightly at her and she immediately relaxes. •Arendt actually arrived with Rudy just when Valor and Nivea started talking. He didn't interferes because Nivea's peace of mind is more important for him than his hostility towards Valor. He is very happy to hear her praise his father. He thinks that they will be happy in Vin Friet and imagines Nivea with a crown on head. He laughs and thinks that he is drunk. Rudy looks at him with a nauseated expression and decides to never let him drink again. Arendt is annoyed to see Valor following Nivea. Looking at Nivea treat Valor indifferently just the way she treated him the previous day, he starts to wonder if it won't matter to Nivea if Valor was in Arendt's place. When the slip-fall happens, Arendt starts moving towards them. He doesn't know whether he is displeased because of the question in his mind or because Valor and Nivea are together. His displeasure vanishes when he holds Nivea. Nivea tells him that he must be tired but he says that even without a promise, he just had to visit her. Nivea thinks that he is acting and says that she will go back to her room but he says that they should go back together. As they walk away Valor looks at them with regret.
