You keep calling it niche, but exactly what stories on NU do you consider not to be niche?, most other popular stories can also be argued to be niche depending on what angle you view them from.
And well, the popularity of it could simply mean that it might not be as niche as you think.

 

I won't have any beef against BL novels as long as their tags/genres are there. Good thing I've hardly met with those novels with their tags removed on them.

It isn't becoming more popular you dolt. It's just not hidden anymore. In older stories it was veiled in behavior that looked innocent to people not in on the culture, it was absolutely everywhere if you know where to look.

Most of the time, homophobes were just annoyed that our BL releases occupied NU's main page. What can they do except to act salty and complain in NUF?

1. It's the internet so you kind of do have to grow a thicker skin in regards to complaints, trolls, etc.

3. TBH I don't really see people complaining all that much about BL/GL

I am replying here because the other thread is locked.

BL is still getting hated. I translate BL and I will tell you that people will rate your hard working translation 1* as soon as it is on NU, one of the main reason why I don't want my translation on NU anymore, I means why bother working your ass if people will just rate it 1* simply because it is BL.

So for the one who complain 'what happen when BL is treated like a shit' my answer is BL is still treated like shit and it is because people like you why translator like me decided to never touch straight story to translate even if I can because I prefer to stick to my shit thank you very much.

 

It really does sadden me when I see trolls just giving good BL novels 1-star ratings solely due to the fact that it is a BL though. At the end of the day, it's a romance story like that of a girl and guy getting together. It's just that in BL, the romantic focus happens to be between two guys rather than a guy and girl.

BL does have its stigma around it, such as the questionable content that's put in or the prospect of two guys catching romantic feelings for each other or doing the deed is "out of the norm" and causes discomfort, but at the same time, can't the same thing be said for cis-het novels? I don't give a 1 star automatically to any cis-het novel I see because of potential toxic masculinity or a bit of a preference difference.

 

The best way to handle it is to stop caring about ratings whatsoever.

Like... People are whimsical in their ratings. Don't take it seriously.

My favorite novel amongst the ones I have translated has a rating of 3.5... Why should I care for that, really? I liked the novel so I translated it, that's all there is to it.
I just assume everyone that rated it 1-2 stars has bad taste and moved on, really. There's not point in worrying about what other people think about the novel I like reading~
