This is difficult, I think there are a few cultivation novels where the MC creates his own cultivation path... but its still not the focus of the novel... Monster Paradise has the MC create his own path after realizing the one he's using already is flawed, but its only starts in the later chapters, can't remember the other ones, but I think it's the same universe as Coiling Dragon?

The MC will study hard but they will not go into depth on what they have learned. All uses of gained knowledge will be practically random tidbits of obscure herbs and techniques. The MC will understand well the secrets of a technique, but it won't be explained in depth because neither you or the author will understand the deductions because they built a story, not a world. In other words, what you're looking for is an author that shows you an intelligent person rather than telling you they are, which is rare, especially when you're looking at free online novels. There also comes a point where power inflation rises too high and you suspend your disbelief too far that any further description just sounds like Strong Force vs Other Strong Force. And at that point, you can't tell why someone won, but you have to accept it because the other guy lost.
