Finished reading Rely on Pampering and Being Gorgeous. It's an entertainment circle rebirth story where the MC went the wrong way in her previous life and was deceived and tricked by the person she fell in love with into falling into the mud pit and eventually dying. In the previous life, she broke off her engagement with her childhood friend and in this life, she decides to cherish her. It's basically a sweet pet article that was indeed sweet. Nothing else to say honestly, it wasn't particularly unique to all the other entertainment circle rebirth stories, and I've read a lot. It was still pretty good though so 9/10.

The story is not at all drama-heavy and has a typical otome-game reincarnation setup, the family is portrait well and the author has a nice sense of humor (with the opening scenario of mc fainting because she detected peppers in her food that she was not good with, causing her to remember her previous life at a young age, or her saying 'it can't be. My previous life didn't amount to the seven years I've lived here in intensity?!' (I bastardised the original text) . The main character seems somewhat naive but with a strong determined character and I am looking forward to the future development of the story Edit 2: ch30 and I am still going to follow this story. Mc is 12 years old already, no heroine in sight. Admittedly, I now am feeling a bit reluctant about this whole romance thingy, the author has managed to establish the mc as a strong charismatic character who's good on their own and I feel a bit like I would imagine a parent would, thinking "will the heroine be good enough for mc? Will she treat Elizabeth well?" I can only hope that romance will be good

~100 chapters in, I am feeling a bit betrayed. No heroine so far and it has a flavor like it has a reverse harem novel. I still have hope yet its dwindling fast. Edit: Reached ch 199, the arc is called "long long epilogue" So far, it's a bit like Bakarina, in the sense that the main character amasses a large harem despite not ending up with either and being incredibly oblivious about it (at least as far as the translations of that novels are showing here). Also, mc captured the heroine! Alas, also Bakarina-style, in the sense that's it's a one-sided feeling. Though the heroine was the only one who had the gusts to confess out of the many admirers. Admittedly, I like how the few bits with the heroine are treated, very shippable. This doesn't excuse the yuribait, but if it's going the no romance route, I can at least not feel completely betrayed by the author. The shame is, the only girl who mc "captured" is the heroine. I think I'd find it in myself to let the yuribait be water under the bridge if there were more female potential love interests. All in all, despite being a scam, it's a well-written book. Though if you want yuri out of it, search for something else. On that note, I find it annoying how lots of novels on syosetu with gl tag are bait. The jwww (can't remember for the life of me how it's really called) has more integrity in this sense, though I personally prefer Japanese yuri's as they generally have a more light-hearted feel Another edit: completed whole story. As someone who came for yuri, I shave off 2 stars for the sheer disappointment of my expectations. BUT, BUT, BUUUUUT! There're 3 side chapters "what if" style that depict the relationship between Elizabeth and Lilia and they were pretty damn sweet. I enjoyed those chapters very much and if I considered them as something stand-alone, I would rate them highly. The author wrote something about a continuation on the moonlight site (which seems to be a syosetu site, but with porn) and I initially found a different story with R18 content but there were no Elizabeth x Lilia stories, which caused me to rage, until I found out the author had a completely different story set for them with 7 chapters of pure smut (except for the last one, that one was just sweet in modern time) and it's the continuation of the 3 extra chapters of the main story and they were GLORIOUS! Though that was honestly some intense stuff(goinh from an intense bdsm play to a wholesome punishment of tying up your partner and eating their favourite pastry in front of them as punishment to crazy futa stuff. Ohhh, I didn't realize that was by the same author. I'm usually hesitant in reading ABO novels but since it's by the same author as Rebirth of the Courtier and that was genuinely really good, I'll give this one a try. I also saw Scum Mother A Dressed as a Bitter Hostess but I was hesitant to read cause the reviews I saw were very mixed and I dislike reading something that might waste my time... If you finish it, can you ping me and let me know your final thoughts on it? Besides that, I finished reading I Started a Business to Support You GL [Rebirth]. It's a rebirth novel where the MC was originally someone who came from a patriarchal family from the country who bowed under the pressure and low self esteem pounded into her since birth. She got married according to her parents' wishes, had children, got depression from the unhappy marriage while still doing the job her parents arranged for her as a teacher, had to take care of her younger brother who is like a leech that only cares about himself, had a second child and then died of birth complications. She then came back as a ghost and witnessed the life after her death, and how the only person who was truly sad about her was someone she lived with for a year who she pushed away for her family. She then woke up back to when she was 18 and in the final year of high school. What she experienced in her "dream" or the memories of her previous life, made her awaken her conscience and realized that she needed to break free of the shackles of her family. This story was very much an inspirational story about a woman working hard to become financially independent through various ways whether it was tutoring or starting a Taobao shop, or working part-time at a start up company, etc. While that's happening, she comes into contact with that roommate she knew from her previous life, the one who cried for her and never fell in love since her death, and also the one who gave her courage to do what she does now in this life. The love story was pretty sweet, but there's a few places that felt like they could be smoother and I was confused on how the FL was able to change her attitude so fast in the later stage. The biggest obstacle between their relationship was the fact that the FL still had some feelings about her previous lives that she doesn't remember, but it made her think that falling in love wasn't worth it. Despite that, it was still a good story and I have to give it a 9/10. On a side note, I felt this story was very feminist and reminded me of some readings I did in my women's literature class in high school. The story was really realistic in how it was executed and portrayed, with a few parts that were beautified since it's a work of fiction and not a biography. The feminist feeling came from what exactly shackled the MC into a life that she hated. It's a common story of being forced by society and family into a life that you don't want but not realizing that cause that's all you've known. She has to cater to the men in her family and listen to her mom to devote her life to a man she doesn't love and only thinks she loves because that's what's expected of her. And then there's no way out because she's driven herself into a dead end since she doesn't realize things can be different. Either way, that part really did move me and I felt a lot more sympathy and good feelings for the story despite it feeling a little dry at the beginning. It's just the way the author writes didn't make me feel that invested but the content kept me reading. I usually keep my political conscience away from GL cause you know, if I think too much about certain works I'll end up disliking them. For instance Clear and Muddy Loss of Love and its ending that made me feel super unsatisfactory of how the plains people were dealt with in the end. That shit pissed me the fuck off when I actually stopped to think about it. Legitimately made me hate the FL to a point where I really hate the conclusion of their romance and I'd probably go back and change my review if I wasn't too lazy to do it. Anyways, despite that though, this work catered to my own views so I liked it better since I think sexism sucks and this story is a huge red flag on the consequences of patriarchy and why you need to break free from it before it's too late.
Yeah, I get it. ABO isn't everyone's cup of tea, and after going through a quite few of them, I've gotten a little picky with them too lol. The author of Rebirth of the Courtier also wrote what happened to Zhao Ji in the first timeline if you haven't seen it yet (幸臣（gl）). They also recently started writing a modern rebirth story with the same characters as Rebirth of the Courtier, also from Zhao Ji's perspective (不臣（现代ABO）). There's only three chapters, but this author hasn't let me down yet. For sure. That's pretty much the same reason why I never ended up finishing Clear and Muddy Loss of Love despite being really close to the end lol. I also try to not think about politics when reading too for the exact same reason. If I think too much about certain aspects of a story, it just makes me exhausted...
The unfortunate part about it is how China should be more politically minded about imperialism since they teach about communism in school and how capitalism and imperialism is bad. The fact that this story still ended up being unfavorable to the people who were essentially colonized felt so much worse in that context. I unfortunately could not help but make political connections to the story because it was very much an example of how bad pillaging and enslaving an indigenous people are so it's not like I can just ignore it. At least with the entertainment circle stories or the ones with overbearing presidents, they're very exaggerated and very far removed from reality since there's definitely no one irl now or in the past who's like that. It's easy to keep political conscience out of those cause they're clearly fictional and said presidents don't tend to do anything that abuses their powers. Clear and Muddy Loss of Love was just too abusive towards the plains people and the examples of abuse are stuff that has historically happened to colonized people so it's like, bruh how do you not think about politics in that case when it's glaring at you... It's really unfortunate cause I absolutely loved the MC and the other side characters that weren't part of the empire. I had like, 10 chapters left and never finished cause the ending thus far pissed me off so bad I couldn't stomach it anymore. I wish it had a bad ending and they never got together cause that felt like colonizer x colonized type shit at the end and that's just fucking gross.
Yes, exactly! Spoiler I think it was around the part where FL literally whips MC that I was like "oh... wow... okay, I don't know how to feel about this anymore," but I kept reading for the sake of finishing the story. But that uncertain feeling I had never went away after that. It was a really off-putting scene, especially when I thought that the two of them were for sure going to end up together. I think I ended up dropping the story after they had sex. I think that's when the feeling that the ending wasn't going to be satisfying settled in. Mostly cause it went from MC being whipped by the FL to MC worshipping (at least that's how I remember the scene anyway) the FL. I wish the FL realized how horrible her father was when she found those records about MC's parents' fate. Like there were literal records of genocide (that she read!!) and, I don't know, in my memory, I feel like she just wasn't horrified/disgusted enough by the things her father and his peers did. I don't know if she acknowledged it later on, but it would've been great if she started questioning everything she knew or thought about how she benefited from the genocide/colonizing of the plains people. Or, you know, have some sort of lingering doubt after she read those records... To say the least, there were many unsatisfactory things about the characters that were from the empire. Especially the FL because, well, she's the FL! Compared to that, Matrilocal Marriage felt like a fresh breath of air. There isn't that much about it that I could complain about... well, aside from the slow burn so slow that I sometimes forgot there was romance lol, but that's kind of par for the course with this author. I'm sure there are some things that are politically questionable (or questionable in general), but I haven't thought too much about it.
Spoiler Yeah that was also where I was like "wtf is going on?" especially cause the previous author's notes was making jokes about that scene that made me think it was just gonna be a BDSM scene or something but naw it's straight up torture. And no, I don't think the FL had any such realization at the end cause I was almost at the end and she only saw it as "well you killed my family and that's bad" without acknowledging that everything her family did was like, 10000000000x worse than literally anything the MC did. I think it's a case of her being an empress at that point and her view on people shifted accordingly. It made her completely unlikeable in my eyes cause no matter the historical context of emperors viewing themselves as above 10,000 people or as heaven's appointed or whatever, they're not exempt from criticism. It's especially true in this case cause her literal lover was one of the plains people and that should've at least made her a little sympathetic towards them. Literally like, I was waiting for her to feel remorse over how she treated the MC's sister in the past when she didn't know that she was her sister, but that didn't happen either. Speaking of the MC's sister, her ending with the FL's sister honestly made me feel nauseous cause that relationship felt so much like a grooming relationship that I cannot support it at all. All of the relationships in the story were just beyond toxic in my opinion and I'm honestly speechless at it. I can handle a certain degree of toxicity in a relationship, but there's just some lines that can't be crossed before I think it's too far. It's really unfortunate too cause I enjoyed Female General Eldest Princess despite the FL being somewhat similar to endgame Clear and Muddy Loss of Love (JWQS) cause at least in her case, I didn't think she went too far. Like, her treatment of human lives was callous, but she didn't deliberately torture anyone so you know, it's acceptable. She's also a princess and not a full blown empress so not as much power in what she can do. I actually think the FL of FGEP and the MC of JWQS are very similar in temperament and honestly I like the FL of FGEP more than the MC cause I think she's just fucking sexy with her borderline villainous personality. It's not like I can't appreciate villainous characters, but there's villainous and then there's scum of the earth, which the FL of JWQS falls into. There's also the fact that the FL of FGEP's ending reflected her growth as a character while the FL of JWQS's ending felt like she regressed as a character. I actually haven't kept up with Matrilocal Marriage cause the slowburn is really slow. I'm gonna just wait till it's finished before sitting down and reading the rest. I do enjoy it a lot so far so I'm looking forward to its completion. As for the political aspect, I think it's fine cause it's more historical realism than anything and the main theme is about giving an ancient woman that grew up under extreme sexism a feminist awakening. BTW, if you enjoy novels with the type of vibe that Please Don't Laugh's works give, then you should try reading The System Sent Me a Lover [End of the World] (系统给我发对象[末世]). It starts off like a typical system bidding novel but set during the zombie apocalypse. That's just how it starts of course, but the actual trajectory of the plot was pretty interesting. It blew my mind when I read it, and I still can't stop thinking about it cause the process in which the MC solved the mystery of the world was just so cool. It's like watching Sherlock solve a mystery. The first half is a survival novel but the later half is solving a mystery that connects things seen from the beginning of the novel until then. And the actual reveal was something I didn't expect but made sense after thinking about it more.
Spoiler Big yikes. That's disappointing, but not surprising. Also, Jesus... I almost forgot about MC's sister and FL's sister. Maybe because I disliked the pairing so much. I also felt nauseous about it. MC's sister was not in a mental place to be in any sort of relationship, let alone the sexual one that FL's sister insisted on having. I remember thinking "wtf?" when the pairing first came up. Not only did it seem to come out of the left-field, but it was just not good. Note to self: bump up FGEP on the to-read list. I've heard good things about it. That's true, there's villainous and then there's scum which JWQS' FL certainly is. And when a well-written character is slightly (or mostly) villainous, they're honestly attractive to me too. I like dark, but not JWQS dark lol. I also haven't kept up with MM's translations since chapter 170. I'm also waiting until things progress more between MC and FL. I honestly like MM's theme. Plus, the atmosphere of the text is kind of on the opposite side of the spectrum from JWQS, which I'm relieved about. I don't think I can read another abusive text like JWQS again. Also thanks for the rec! I love mysteries/problem solving and zombie apocalypses, so it sounds like an interesting text. I'll definitely give it a read!
Just a heads up, I'll probably work on doing clean MTL translations for it after I finish the stuff I'm translating currently. My translating schedule is basically do 5 chapters of each novel everyday so I can finish and just schedule them to be released for the foreseeable future. It'll probs be a month or so before I finish the rest of the chapters for the 4 novels I'm translating (I'm currently on chapter 25 of each). You can wait for me to start doing that or if you prefer to just go ahead and read the MTL, it's your call. Speaking of, if you feel like it you can check out the novels I'm translating cause I think they're all really good ones that people should give a read. Golden Crow's Self-Cultivation is just a really interesting quick transmigration novel with a non-human protagonist who has very refreshing approaches to the worlds she goes to. Her goal is to replenish her soul through the multiple incarnations of herself in different worlds and resurrect after dying from Hou Yi in the mythical story of Hou Yi shoots the sun. The romance is a little toxic but nothing too much, just some manipulation that gets found out and punished and they get together after resolving those issues. The selling point of the novel though is the interesting settings of the worlds with unique plot lines and an MC who's just really cool. It's like reading about a fox demon using her own methods to achieve what she wants. There's I Want to Be Alone, Beautifully which is genuinely a very toxic relationship at the start where the FL forces the MC a few times throughout a few worlds, but the setting and backstory behind it makes me go "well this is fine." The FL is the very tragic heroine that the MC is the author of and the MC has to go through her stories to fix them to not be as abusive and tragic as they currently are. Honestly the story is somewhat of a deconstruction of the setting for quick transmigration novels where it directly gives you the perspective of the FL who has her life interfered with and set for her by someone who is essentially her god who made everything happen. Even her act of saving her is like an act of god and that kind of commentary was really interesting. There's a happy ending, and the MC grows as a character and the FL reaches a point where she recovers who she once was and it was genuinely really good. The journey that both the MC and FL go through was really interesting to read and it was interesting to see something that's not so "pure" in terms of the evolution of their relationship. It's almost like enemies to lovers except one person desperately wants recognition to a point of doing bad things for it (FL) while the other does not give a fuck about anything (MC). There's also After the Full-Level Boss is Reborn, which is a xianxia cultivation novel that loves its plot twists. Both the MC and FL are reborn, and I don't actually know who I would call the MC or FL in this case cause it's equal in presentation for them. Either way, Peiyu, a genius cultivator who was tricked into stealing a divine beast was thrown into a demon cave to die and instead became a monster known as the "blood demon." She finds a way to break the curse of her sect in the first chapter and finally dies before being reborn to her 8 year old self with access to her blood mist that made her famous in her previous life. Huaibo is her master and in this life she's a transmigrator (supposedly) who decided to change the trajectory of her fate since she was reborn 300 years before the start of the story. That's just the setup, the actual plot itself can't be described because you really need to know what's going on or it won't make any sense. I'll just say that I cried reading this and I thought how the story panned out was super interesting to read. The romance is kinda tragic though but that's a process and it ends happily but god I definitely cried because of it. Finally there's Host, Please Don't Match Up with the Vicious Female but honestly this one was one I rated 9/10 and I wouldn't put it in the same category as the other 3, but it's still good. It's a dual transmigrator plot where the MC and FL have different roles to play without realizing the other is a transmigrator. The MC's original identity is a general of an interstellar society while the FL is normal. This one was more of a sweet story than anything so yeah that's basically it. P.S. Sorry for being so talkative and recommending you so much stuff, but you seem like you have similar tastes that I have and I'm a little excited to share what I like with you. (Also I have insomnia and can't sleep rn so this is how I vent my energy xd)

A lovely sweet and innocent (if maybe silly) protagonist is quite novel to me, when it's to this extent. The FL? Sorry, but the protagonist is mentally basically a child. Considering there weren't any pictures, coupled with mc's pov being central, I couldn't help but feel that FL was taking advantage of a child. It was slightly (may quite even) disturbing
