Or we gain such a precise control over decomposition and bacteria that the states of clean and unclean no longer matter to us and we eat with hands dirtied from food residue and dirt days old without worry of getting sick nor feeling disgust.

Okay let's go a bit deep into this the dictionary definition of Sandwich is:
"an item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with meat, cheese, or other filling between them, eaten as a light meal."

But to be more specific it comes from John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich
He was noble which was quite adept to gambling and had the habit of not even getting up from the card table to eat so he would order his servants to bring pieces of meat/ham inside two slices of bread, later people started to call it as Sandwich because it was what the Lord of Sandwich Islands ate.

Technically saying anything inside a sliced bread is called a sandwich by dictionary definition, and if you pick up by the historical side of the word any sort of meat encased in bread is a sandwich.

While some people may argue, sausage IS meat (unless you are eating the vegetarian kind), so it matches both the the dictionary and historical definition of what is a sandwich, so yes hotdogs area type of sandwich.

Very nice. But tell me, why is it not a burger? According to your definition a burger is a sandwich too so a hotdog can definitely be a burger too!

Uh I guess, because trenchers are basically bowls or plates made of bread. The question is whether the hot dog bun qualifies as a plate, I suppose.

Actually yes burger is a type of sandwich

burger is word derivated from the city of Hamburg, and it was a name used to describe the type of sandwich they ate there, which was made using grounded beef patty.

Later the word burger started to be used to describe sandwiches which uses any sort of grounded meat.
So by historical definition any non beef patty isn't a burger lol XD

But by dictionary definition the groud meat patty needs to be in a roundy/circular shape to be considered a burger, so ground your sausage into a circular form and you will have the first burger hotdog ever

I disagree! A hotdog has a cylindrical patty with large length and low radius. A burger has a cylindrical patty with low length and large radius, but they both have cylindrical patties!! So a hotdog is a burger.

    I rest my case.

    Flat bread subtype- lepinja
The meat sticks inside - ćevapi
The reddish sauce- probably ajvar ( not sure, got the pic from some rando site)

I'd still call that a sandwich. As long as its bread and not rice or leaves and there is something
stuffed in/put on for taste, I'd call that a sandwich.

Damn ... I actually had to look this up.

According to historians, it was supposed to be a sandwich! Dun dun duuunnnnn!!!

The history of the hot dog reveals a different answer, though.
Charles Feltman, a German immigrant who came to America as a teenager in 1856, is said to have invented the hot dog when he took German frankfurters, put them in elongated buns and sold them from a push cart on Coney Island to make money.
Feltman went on to establish a successful restaurant empire around the creation, but years after he died, his sons sold the company to a hotel owner and it went out of business in the 1950s.
Feltman's hot dog was resurrected five years ago when brothers Joe and Michael Quinn started Feltman's of Coney Island. Armed with the original Feltman's recipe and spice blend, which was handed down to them by their grandfather who received it decades ago from a friend and former Feltman's employee, they set out to bring the original hot dog back to New York.
Michael Quinn, a Coney Island historian, said he believes Charles Feltman intended to create a sandwich when he first put a frankfurter in a bun. In one archived photo of the original Feltman's restaurant Quinn found during his research, the menu item was advertised on the window as a "frankfurter sandwich."
"I think it is in the sandwich family. It's meat between bread," Quinn said. "But for me a hot dog is a hot dog."

So all this time I've been eating ... sandwiches?
