Discussion Dear Asians, can you live without rice?

I've been in the Philippines for so long and everyday, in every meal, there's always rice. There are super rare occasions where rice isn't in the table like when we eat a bread called Pandesal in the morning. It great to pair it up with hot coffee or choco. Sometimes, even with pasta and pizza in the table, there would still be a little corner where rice is placed among other dishes that goes with it.

So, Asians (and other people who eat rice frequently), can you live without rice?

 

No way, rice is very important!!! It's part of so many good dishes and good on its own, plus I eat it lots!

I live in Germany and most of my meals have rice . It’s easy to make and fast.

I can't live without rice but I have to lessen my consumption because of the calories it contain ksks. Food without rice doesn't taste very good. I always feel like rice makes every food perfect. I was even shocked after knowing not everyone in the world eat (foods with) rice. Riceeeeee isssssss lifeeeeee! <(￣︶￣)>

Yes. But do you mean without rice rice? Like what bout rice noodles or buns made from rice flour?

Or just plain simple bowl of rice? That I can live without. But me gonna miss those rice noodles if its including things made out of rice. ;-;

I’ve visited Japan a few times, and every time I made sure to have rice every day, even when I was having pasta dishes, which yes, I realize is weird, but the rice was so good! >_< Coming back home was always an adjustment, both for the rice, and for the fact that American meat really isn’t as good unless it’s the super expensive stuff. At home, I have rice pretty rarely. I had it a lot during high school (boarding school) because the food options weren’t really great, but I’m just too lazy to make rice, we don’t have a rice cooker, and there’s no rice here quite as delicious as Japanese rice unless you add stuff to it.

Which is why it's weird when people complain about Japanese people searching for rice in Isekai series. Rice is literally the foundation of their food culture and the Japanese writer is writing a story for Japanese readers not foreign readers who can't understand the cultural backgrounds of the characters.

 

I think what makes Japanese rice good is it's kinda sticky quality. The rice they use considers the fact that they use chopsticks to eat. Other types of rice are more loose than jp rice.

 

I do eat rice almost everyday at lunch, but... Tbh, I wouldn't mind substituting it for pasta for the most part.

I feel like rice's main job is to be cheap food that fills my stomach, because meat is expensive and stuff... Pasta serves a similar job, but rice is cheaper.
