I read through this thread with bemusement, going: Wait, this isn't just considered basically normal?

Sure, I realise that a non-trivial percentage of people have parents who are humorless and/or homophobic and/or general all-round jerks - but am I more privileged than I realised to live in a world where basically everyone I know can kid around with their parents like this if they want to, and not feeling free to do so would be considered significantly weird and bad?

...I am now depressed at thinking that maybe most people's default normal is having parents you're afraid to be silly with.

 

Your idea of normal is always different from other peoples because the environment you grew up in isn’t the same as others your idea of family life and it’s normality is based on what you e seen growing up what others have gone through what their lives have been like isn’t something you’d know unless you asked so their idea of normal family life is what’s normal for them and them alone

 

Probably not on the exact same topic, it is a slightly more sensitive one in my country, but I would joke about most other things with my parents. They are both cool with most things but being raised in a traditional environment like they were doesn't help in being open-minded towards some things. Although, if I were to really be homosexual, I might have been able to talk to them slowly and change their views over a period of time.

Me and my family basically joke about everything. I just got rushed by ambulance to the hospital? Time to text my parents a joke about all the IVs I have in my arms. Someone's birthday is coming up? Prepare for all the jokes about being ancient. That's just how familial relationships work between us.

 

As of the 2020s, Spain is considered one of the most culturally liberal and LGBT-friendly countries in the world.

There are still some zones with hardcore evangelicals that will curse you and seven generations of your family to hell for being homosexual. But the gay people I know never faced the hardship I see in the USA or China. Relationships between parents and children are typically pretty chill here.
