This thread is about culture shock.
If cannot see it then that makes you racist.

Do not use our language when you cannot comprehend it.

@Wujigege Why was I summoned here?

Possibly? I'm not familiar with the drama, so I can't say for certain. Both words can be translated differently depending on the context.

Lol I meant that both 못난이 and 주의보 can be translated differently depending on the context. I don't know the context because I'm not familiar with the drama. But my best guess as to why the Eng translation sounds so awkward is that "ugly" is being used as a noun instead of an adjective. It was probably translated that way because 못난이 and 주의보 are both nouns.

I don't think that disliking a culture is considered racism, because culture isn't race. Not to mention that the post you're replying to never stated that they really disliked the culture--disliking certain phrases doesn't mean disliking the entire culture nor the language. And, even if they dislike a culture, one of the points of the thread was that reading media of that culture often doesn't deliver the same kind of feeling, so what's it to you if they like reading that media?

Plus, culture shock is a real thing; everyone has their preferences and things that they're used to seeing...things that they consider normal. What breaks immersion for some people isn't something I feel like should offend anyone. Although hearing that your culture is "cringey" can be pretty offensive, something breaking immersion just indicates that he reader isn't used to it.

That being said, I guess some people did make too many generalizations in their titles and posts. Using the word disgust and saying that they'll "cringe to death" also comes off a bit too strong, I suppose.

I haven't experienced culture shock very much, although I also watch no KR/JP dramas (I'm pretty used to watching CN ones already, though). I think the thing that gets me the most is how people in East Asian dramas don't seem to care how loudly they eat (is it just normal to them to slurp noodles?)

You have your own preferences, so it's not racist lol
I'm also Asian and I realise this is discussing the terrible parts of Asian dramas

I think Korean dramas has too much slow motions, zoom ins and zoom outs and too much music,

Chinese dramas have terrible acting and plot holes, how does a man who dies kneeling remain upright?

Japanese dramas generate too much optimism (with the power of friendship, i can conquer the world!)

    But Indian drama especially
    is a masterpiece
    - hanging freshly washed laptop as laundry
    - powepoint slide transitions
    - zoom crash bang zoom zoom zoom crash crash thunder crash thunder swish swish swish sound effects

I'm not sure but I've heard somewhere slurping means you are respecting the chef and saying the food is delicious in Japan
Also some experiences I had with culture shock is Europeans saying 17°C is nice and warm
I live in tropical region so 27°C in my country is what I think is nice and warm
    17 is too cold :sweating_profusely:

I live in Ireland. 16°C is too hot. We just had 25-30°C and I personally died like a rotten fish that was made out of ice then melted. I feel comfortable around 7-ish°C.

I don't expect high production quality in Asian dramas. The budget dwarfs the one used in Hollywood

Watched two dramas this year both Chinese with unflattering angles when actresses wearing short skirts stood up.
    It is just poor editing.

The Asian dramas co produced with Netflix have higher production quality

    It is about realistic expectations.
I am watching for a more prudish romance and not having to hear the f word every 2 seconds.

I grew up on Hindi cinema : Dharmendra, Big B, SRK but the recent trend to not have item numbers is disappointing.
Haven't watched an Hindi movie since 2016 R.. Raj Kumar or something with Shahid Kapur.

Funny story : I was screaming in righteous indignation that they cast Sunny Leone a porn star when they had their pick of women in India.

Turns out Sunny Leone is Indian.
I really looked stupid that time lol.

I have watched too many Indian movies. I am too familiar with their tropes

Ohh, I grew up with hongkong and chinese movies like CJ7, Rob-B-Hood, and Shaolin Soccer

as for prudish romance without discussing bed business 24/7 would be hard in western standards :sweating_profusely:
What I feel that would be pretty nice based on synopsis was a movie titled The Beauty Inside (based on western movie too if i remember correct)
Dude turns into many appearances, old or young, beautiful or ugly, but his heart stays beautiful and true to his love :aww: that's the impression I got from the trailer, haven't watched it yet unfortunately

There is a drama adaptation of the Beauty Inside.

My sister loved it but its not my cup of tea.
It's the female that changes to many people in the Korean version.
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beauty_Inside_(TV_series)

There is also a Korean movie which came out first

To be honest, the Indian movie that really impacted me as a kid has to be this

The West had John Travolta in Grease and Saturday Night Fever.

I got Mithun Madness! Mithun Chakraborty in Disco Dancer.

I should probably watch the movie below one of these days

I started with Japanese anime, Dragon Ball in around 2001.
Started reading Japanese manga with One Piece, because I couldn't handle Arlong Park cliff hanger in the anime
Started reading JP, CN, KR Novels, due to Limited bandwidth issues, in 2014
Started watching JP, CN, KR movies & serials/series on Rakuten Viki & iQIYI, with upgraded internet, subscribed on 2018
Still watching iQIYI subscribed; dropped Rakuten viki because it did not have much movies & animated stuff

    ps.
I had subscribed to Netflix for 3 months, in 2016 & 2018. Then I realized, that I prefer iQIYI content over Netflix !
I am from India, & I never liked the lovey-dovy content of Bollywood. South Indian movies are ok, but I prefer original audio with English subtitles... something which websites/apps don't have yet.
