A long time ago I met a guy trying to sell me rings stolen from dead people. He was working with another guy at a funeral to get them. He had tons of rings that they took off dead people before they buried them. He told me that he got them off dead people and said it’s better than stealing from the living.

    ???
It feels disrespectful to be stealing from the dead no matter how you look at it though...

Also the thought of using those rings is creepy.

This sounds like a decent start of a horror movie.

It’s also weird that they only dress the top front of a corpse. Their back and legs don’t have any clothes.

might have something to do with how it makes it more convenient to cloth the corpses but that funeral home sounds sketchy

That IS the same as stealing from the living. Some rings would perhaps go in the grave, sure, but it's common to dress up the corpse in jewelry during the wake and take them off before the burial. many of those rings would've been inherited by a relative. And now that relative has been robbed not just of a valuable inheritance but also of a memento and possibly a family heirloom.

Not ok. Especially as a funeral employee, he almost certainly knew this and pulled that lame excuse anyway.

The moral about it still the same yes no matter what it wasn't yours and it was some else's but pragmatically speaking welp... dead people has no more uses for them better to be of use to someone's alive. Oh and yes stealing from living people is worse than the dead that is true.

Better? Nah, it’s still stealing and it’s stolen item. stolen item can easily get you in trouble with cops.

Stealing from the dead is disrespectful, but picking up loot is not.

Jokes aside, I know it only applies in games and novels.

The dead are too recent. If they've been dead for a long time you could dress it as archaeology and got paid to do it too.

So many people saying things like "it's disrespectful" I wonder why you think that the dead are more deserving of respect than the living? It's still illegal to steal from the dead but what he said is true in my opinion. Better to steal from the dead than from the living.

If a ring that a corpse is going to wear in a coffin can pay for a poor family's meal, then personally I don't consider it a bad thing (not talking about the law here).

But like Llamadragon said, before they bury or cremate a person, their family would recover the objects, so who you are actually taking the items away from isn't the body but the surviving members of the family.

the Main characters from the novels I'm reading do this all the time and I see it as fine. Btw don't archaeologists also do this?
