So based on the spoilers from the reviews, their parents thought ML wanted to marry the sister, but he actually wanted to marry the FL? If so, does the ML know they sent the sister instead of FL? or did he think FL is the one who died?
Spoiler: At a Passing Glance Beginning Situation: Parents are emotionally and psychologically abusive towards FL on top of criminal neglect. Apparently she (FL) doesn't fit the parent's image of beauty and thus the difference in treatment and lack of Debutante season (ie. She hasn't been introduced to aristocratic society). Two thing that keeps coming up in the MTL is FL's height and her hair color (mostly when she's being torn down by her parents). Her world view is almost parallel to Maximillian's (Oak Tree). She just doesn't have Maxi's stutter. * I actually see this type of baffling behavior in a lot sibling treatment abuse cases so it's very true to life. At what was supposed to be her Birthday celebration?, her parents threw a party for her sister instead. It's where she meets the "Foreign Duke" of rumor. **ML doesn't get FL's name before she runs off. Due to that he (understandably) ends up mixing the sisters names. When the unexpected proposal reaches the house, the parents assume it's for "Golden Child" daughter. Said sister then experiences "the hardships" of bridal training. The stress of it all (**insert sarcasm**) drives the spoiled self-absorbed sister to flaunt? Share? Who knows? reveal her "Grande Escape Plan" a la crossdressing so she can go 'chase the ladies' (literally) to the FL...who doesn't completely understand it all. So the sister "dies" enroute. **Good old Spidey-Sense (*foreshadowing) and an extremely heavy dose of skepticism says otherwise As a consolation prize? Trade? Appeasement?? The FL's father tries to use her as a replacement commodity/toy to appease the Duke...and that is where summary ends. So far the MTL shows a competent/informed ML. Because when the FL (and father) arrive, they can hear the ML raging from outside about how he won't accept imposters, and he only wants FL (*whose name he mixed up with her sister's). His misunderstanding and mixed name issues are cleared up ASAP the moment he sees FL. Once FL is safely tucked away, the Duke has WORDS with her father. He promptly runs away, abandoning her to ML. The gist so far is the ML is decent and the couple are giving off (Athy-Rian, Evil Lady Will Change/Riftan-Maxi) vibes.
Spoiler: Anastasia MC’s older sister is kinder than their sh*t parents, but she is kinda stupid. When MC was being mistreated and used like a servant, Anastasia tried to comfort her somehow, but MC kept insisting that she was fine and she like it doing her chores. Anastasia, that idiot, believed her, thinking her sister hates cute dresses and luxury. She always compare herself to MC, thinking she has no other worth than being cute and being a doll for her parents and envy MC for her freedom. She didn’t actually die. She was attacked by a man who wanted to assault her, but she escaped by cutting off her hair when he grabbed onto it. She also grab a set of clothes from her carriage, but it turned out to be male clothes (she likes to design cross dressing outfits, she confide this to MC before she left). So she disguised as a boy and got an apprenticeship somewhere. She was glad to escape an unwanted marriage, but then she heard her younger sister is being forced to marry her fiancé in her place, she became convinced that her sister is suffering and decided to go back to take back her place to free her sister. Her fiancé turned that down, of course, because he actually loves MC, not her, and MC was happy with him. Spoiler: MC She was forced to take over the duties of a baron because her father was incompetent. Her parents were obsessed with blonde hair for some reason and utterly detest red hair (MC’s hair). I think Anastasia is adopted? ML confronted them about how they can treat their real daughter the way they did, and all they said was that she wasn’t cute. Turns out, they were dragging down MC’s confidence so she won’t leave them to find a better life, because she obviously have the skills to do so. Spoiler: Parents MC had them drag to her engagement party, which secretly doubled as a condemnation event. Anastasia accompanied them disguised as a redhead boy, which they scorned. At the ceremony, the father kept insisting that she doesn’t deserve to be happy and the position belongs to Anastasia. The couple were egged by a servant (they lied that their hands slip and the couple was infuriated but couldn’t do anything about it). MC yanks off her mother’s blonde wig, revealing her true red hair. Then, MC openly accused them and threatened to send them to prison for incompetence and embezzlement. ML’s father offer to send a skilled manager to take over the barony. MC’s mother tried to shield MC’s father, but he felt that her protection is degrading his masculinity and he insulted her, but ML lost his temper and sent MC’s father flying. Anastasia revealed herself to her mother then, and her mother started acting sweet and nice, but Anastasia already know her parents’ true faces and rejected her, saying, “your sweet Anastasia never existed “ and smash an egg into her mother’s head. That’s all I read. The MTL was sloppy and I skipped around a lot.
The older beloved popular spoilt sister Anastasia appears to be an incompetent naive harmless idiot.... But at least she is not an evil jealous envious scheming White Lotus Bitch. She is a heavily abused & traumatized damsel in distress who can only be healed/pampered and power up by a higher ranking generous aristocrat. There is clearly a power inbalance + one sidesd dependency between these two and I don't like she has no inner rage at all until she by Sheeran luck/a miracle is treated as a Privileged Princess in another luxurious enviroment. Marie is on the same 'Helpless Victim Damsel in Distress Turned Loved Girlboss by ML' level as Max ('Under The The Oak Tree'), Chloe ('The Abandoned Wife Has A New Husband') and Sylvia ('The Dragon Prince's Bride'). She is inferior than Anne Elliot (Persuasion), Evony Vonieck (Lady Evony/Ebony), Leslie (The Monster Duchess & The Contract Princess). There is this one very nuanced commentary moment in Manga Chapter 26 where Mio after her investigestation explains/confirms to Kyuros that Marie is the biological daughter of her abusive toxic parasitic trash parents. There is no the melodramatic plot twist that she is illegitimate, adopted or was switched at birth. Her blood parents are just bad irresponsible miserable people and don't love + appreciate her! Well compared to Marie who has been harmed, exploited, oppressed and overworked her whole life, Ana still has it so much better than her. It is possible that the Mangaka made some changes to fleshed out the characters more. But the only way to figure that out is making the effort of using the MTL to read whole Japanese Light Novel or asking other users who already did the work.
About Chloe I am not really agree. At the end of the main story she turned out to be quite a bad-ass female lead who knows how to bite you back in the way hurt you the most. She has a similar vibe as Charlotte, the female lead of "Cheerful Countess Sisters" (came from the same manhwa artists), both of them appeared to be a lifeless and powerless doll, but if you look closely they are really not someone you can carelessly touch. As far as I know Marie does not give you the same vibe.
But the point is that many heavily abused victim FLs in this genre can't become Girlboss Bitches without the privilege of being rescued/supported/loved by a powerful dirty rich fairy tale noble/royal ML who can give you easy access to destroy anyone.
I guess for a relatively simple and short storyplot of webtoon/light novel aimed for common readers like us... it is easier to use that set up you mentioned. Plot about abused people crawling up from the bottom and making a hard fight against oppressors is possible but it will fall into the category of serious, social realism aiming to expose and critique the social issues, and such works will have a different audience. Future translated manga chapter may reveal more essential info. But from available spoilers in this thread and the recent manga developments I guess that both of the daughters are simply tools being used by the psychopathy parents to suit their freaking aims and tastes. Ana is a mannequin against her will and Marie is a slave laborer. These trashy parents (and the grandparent, like shown in the translated manga, too) simply see the daughters as objects to be invested, not as humans with human rights and emotions.
