So, I'm trying to set up dual monitors right? I'm using my old LG tv as a secondary and a newly bought HP monitor.

I bought an HDMI splitter and I've gotten it to work to show on both TV's, but it's only duplicating and my TV takes priority which messes up the resolution on my monitor.

Another issue is that since my TV is taking priority, my monitor is not being detected but it's still duplicating?

    Anyone have any fixes/suggestions?

while it is called a 'splitter', what is does is actually "duplicate". so no, you won't get multiple different display output with it, if that's your intention.

An HDMI splitter is a small electronic device used to duplicate a single HDMI signal and output it several times. HDMI splitters take a signal in from a source device (your pc/laptop/camera/phone etc) and then send that exact same signal out to multiple displays (monitors/TVs)

I see, so what would I need to buy to make it extend, like how you can use 2 monitors as 1 basically?

Theoretically you don't need anything extra, since your video card should have more than a single video output. At most, you will need to buy an adapter (either DP to HDMI, or DVI to HDMI) depending on the type of outputs you have on your card.

what devices are you using? pc? laptop?

if pc, does it have a graphics card, or was it using an integrated gpu?

most graphic card for pc that are released within the last 15 years (at least) have multiple output ports, and are capable of outputting to at least 2 different displays, no matter how potato the card is.

even if you don't have a discrete gpu, some motherboards features more than one display outputs.

it would help a lot if you can tell us the specs (and model) of your system, be it pc or laptop

Just get two hdmi cables and plug them into the tv and monitor. Then plug both of those into the computer. If you don't have two hdmi ports on the pc, then use displayport for the new monitor instead and hdmi for the tv.

A video card with multiple outputs. Most video cards have this.
Now if you only have a single output for whatever reason (rare but it exists) then you have to get a bit more creative. One option is to get a USB monitor and DisplayLink software. You can then use the USB monitor as a second monitor. However this option only works if you have a DisplayPort output.

Yeah, I'm just going to resort to buying a displayport cable, my other HDMI ports do not work because I had gotten the video card replaced (old one fried). And I'm not too familiar with how computers work so I'll just go with the easiest option: Buy the displayport cable and hope it works.

As mentioned, you only need 2 connections to your gpu to make it dual monitor. While some GPUs do have multiple hdmi ports, in case of laptops they will not.

So your options for connecting things are:
    HDMI port
    VGA port
    DVI port
DisplayPort (may come as a mini-dp port)
USB-C port (not all usb-c ports support video out)
Proprietary dock port (for laptops and needs a dock)

So as long as you can connect any of the 2, you are good to go.

If you have a display port on your gpu, make sure you have one on your monitors too. More than likely the TV does not, so it would just be your remaining monitor. For better mix-matching, often times it makes more sense to get an Display Port to HDMI adapter than a separate cable. Adapters are usually cheaper and more versatile (as you can connect to the TV)

Yeah, the displayport did the job. Monitor has displayport. TV has HDMI.
