The glaze is typically hard and 'krispy' when you buy it in the grocery store. Fresh off the line at the store, it is not krispy but they couldn't call their store 'sticky kreme' now could they?

No their never “crispy”. A few are more cake than donut. Otherwise it’s like any other donut, but I’ll say this much. It does taste and feel different. I wouldn’t say better, but different
Yes. It might have been a Japan-only flavour but I had what they call a ブリュレ グレーズド or a brulleé glazed donut. It has a crunchy caramelized crust with custard filling.
