I’ve heard it’s one of the best forms of self-defense. I try to do research from time to time to see what’s supposed to be the best in terms of self defense either to learn myself potentially or to teach little hamsters in the future to make sure they stay safe. MMA always ranks as number one or number two, no matter what list I check. It’s always seemed… a little too violent for my tastes, though.

Well, imho, it's akin to some forumla 1 driver dieing in an accident. Tragic? Of course. But anyone doing that kind of sport should be aware of the
risk(s). Same (or even more so) with martial type of sports

There's a reason for there being "comabt sports" and "martial arts".

It’s not bad necessarily; all participants are adults and should be able to weigh out the pros and cons. And plus it’s more combat then actual presentation to children.

Humans are very very vile...don't ever mistake our current peace and joyful coexistence with us being peace loving species..

From ages past we've drunk ourselves to death in debauchery, cruelty, slaughter, corruption.

Think of the most twisted thing you possibly can.... we've done it somewhere in time...I 100% bet on it..

So this kinda sports is nothing but a gateway for some us to vent that primal urge of violence... It's in our genes.. nothing much we can do about it.

In the end no matter how high a pedestal we bring ourselves we are just animals like in the wild with urges and predisposition beyond our conscious control.

well, technically we could become domesticated if we had an all powerful alien species who could single handedly crush us at any point in time. Think about how dogs came to be. Wild animals (like normal humans), domesticated to be as cute and loyal as possible.

Then we wouldn't be homo sapiens...just like dogs are no more Wolfs..

By the time genelogically we've been domesticated we would've lost all resemblance to our current self...

Even if we came face to face with them they wouldn't feel anymore human-like than the apes we see in zoos

hey, unlike with dogs, it's not like aliens would need to rely on evolution and long term change. They might be able to just rewire us as soon as we're born. Who knows what's possible?

While I agree that MMA is one of the best way of self defense, remember that MMA is a sport in a ring. Remember that outside of a ring, the rules are different. You or your assailant might fight dirty, maybe there will be weapons involved, and you can also simply run away.

And rewiring wouldn't change our dna?

Just a bit of wrong dna being copied results in horrendous hereditary diseases...just a teeny tiny flaw in dna in fetuses gives a deadly change in appearances ...ever seen a Cyclop baby?

The point is the we in present are inherently predisposed to cruelty and chaos...any change will result in we no longer being "we"

your point stands but technically can still be wrong. You don't have to change DNA, you just have to change the brain. Therefore, we could still be the same species, just all of us lobotomized and neutered.

You are aware that boxing has had a higher fatality rate since gloves were introduced as a result of more boxers aiming for the head; before gloves, punching the head bare knuckle caused damage to the hands which caused hesitancy in aiming for it.

Believe me, sport is not a source of human stupidity. Killing and competing is a base primal instinct of all organisms, we live in a world of finite resources, where we compete for food, mates, shelter, and water. However, with 'sophisticated' societal structures, the outlets of our competitive nature have grew more numerous and often smaller in importance. Human stupidity is solely our arrogance in believing ourselves to be understanding and knowledgeable when in reality we're ignorant of a lot.

Change the brain? Like post birth ?

If yes then we would retain our primary dna only for the first few generations... Our chromosomes get updated very regularly, any change in our body is recorded...maybe not in the first offspring but way down the line the change will prevail...

Long periods of pressure, extreme conditions will change our biochemistry.

But... then you learn self-defense? Preferably with an instructor who makes sure you stay safe while learning, and not with an opponent who's gonna punch you as hard as they can for a competition?

FYI dogs kill an average of 25,000 people yearly, not acounting single dogs owners that are eaten by their dogs after their death of course (in a 2015 study about carnivorous pet owners eaten by their pet after death, they found that in 24 percent of the cases, which all involved dogs owners in particular, the partially eaten body was found less than a day after death, which mean the dogs started eating their owner less than 24 hours after his or her death)...

So yeah, cute and loyal but certainly not perfectly harmless...

Meh, seems pretty normal to me. It's about as dangerous as any sport. Any sport has its own problems and risks, some greater than others, but yeah.

Dunno, I support deathmatches between any politicians who want to advocate war.

Not sure about giving the winner any price tho... maybe exposure?
