I went to my school's library today, and pulled off many books that looked interesting. I tried to read a bit of all them before putting them back down, but I still wasn't able to find a single one I liked. Maybe I'm a little picky, but most of them just had really shit writing styles and that just completely throws me off. I just can't read something that sounds like it was written by a 8th grader. It really sucks though, because I sorta hate reading on my phone and love having physical books. If I had a kindle I'd be happy to read some stuff on it, but I don't :(

Anyway, I thought I'd ask here if anyone has some good western novel recs. Preferable something you'd expect to find at a library, because I don't want to go out and buy a bunch of books XD. Bonus points if it's supernatural/halloweeny +3rd person (I usually tend to prefer it, but I'm not oppsed to 1st person! I just feel like it's harder to pull off, also like, not horror), because that's what I was looking for.

I dunno if it fits your bill but I recommend:
    Metaworld Chronicles
    from Royal Road

Its kind of an Alternate Universe of our world so think Modern Society with DnD-esque magic.

I absolutely recommend the Eragon cycle, the hobbit if you haven’t read it already, and the percy Jackson series is always a good bet too.

My brother seems to think doctor Seuss is a good bet. :)

Halloween is coming up, so HP Lovecraft's stories are excellent. I especially recommend Pickman's Model, Color from Outer space, and the Call of Cthulhu. Most of them are 1st person.

There's a fantastic manga adaptation of Mountains of Madness, but don't get your hopes up about finding it in a library.

Larry Correia's Monster Hunter Nation is fun.

If you want to read good writing for style, John C Wright is worth a look. I enjoyed Awake in Nightland.

    Happy hunting.

If you care about writing style that much then you should check out the kingkiller chronicles by patrick rothfuss. It has some of the best style I've ever read, and the story it tells is pretty decent too. A warning though, the 2nd book came out in 2011 and people are wondering if the 3rd will ever even come out, though the author hasn't cut off communication and their last update on it was positive, so who knows when it could come out.

I'll also 2nd brandon sanderson, though his writing style is a bit more YA the stories he tells are some of the best.

...it's been so long since I've read western novels I've forgotten a lot of authors. Especially when it comes to male MC's. I hope this is along the lines of what you are looking for.

    Authors with Female MC:
    • Ilona Andrews: multiple series, humor, uses bits of a lot of mythology Greek, Celtic, Russian etc.
    • Patricia Briggs: two closely related series, Mercedes Thompson and Alpha and Omega: werewolves, fae, vampires, Native American mythology
    • Kelley Armstrong: multiple series including young adult, some of hers are 1st person POV, werewolves, witches etc.
    • Anne Bishop: multiple series, interesting well developed fantasy world(s)
    • Michelle Sagara: multiple series, interesting well developed fantasy world
    • C.E. Murphy: blended Celtic and native American, especially Cherokee, mythology
    • Kim Harrison: the Hallows series, demons, witch, fae, vampires, I think 1st person POV
    • Laurell K Hamilton: warning (female MC has multiple partners/is poly especially in later books), used the classic vampire, werewolves etc. 1st person POV
    Male MC:
    • Second the Dresden Files
    • Elliot James: Pax Arcana series, urban fantasy

Codex Alera by Jim Butcher. Same author as the Dresden files. I actually think that the vibe is pretty similar to a lot of the webnovels in terms of pacing and themes and enjoyability. But the writing is a lot better.

Thought of a few more decent works I recalled on my way to the grocery store:
Charles De Lint's "Jack the Giant Killer". Also found in the collection " Jack of Kinrowan", but the second story is awful.
Meredith Ann Pierce's "Darkangel". Sequels are skippable.
    Stewart O'nan's "Night Country"
Christopher Golden's "Boys are Back in Town"white

Even if you like Dr Lint, his works suffer a certain sameness. After the first three, you hit the point of diminishing return hard. His early to mid career works are generally better.

    Bump.
I agree although I prefer something related to business.

I will not recommend Royalroad novels since its the same quality or lower.

Light novels are better but the fault can also be in the translation.

Some translators have admitted to changing the plot as they see fit eg The Amber Sword

I've read a lot of western novels but not too many of the big names that are super popular. I used to do the exact same thing as you and pull random books that seemed interesting from the library, so here's my list of the best I've read:

    Psion series by Jacob Gowans
Enders game by Orson Scott Card
    Ancillary justice by Ann Leckie
Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins (Its way better than the Hunger Games, if you are going to read anything on this list read this)
Tunnels by Roderick Gordon (First 100-200 pages are kinda boring but after that it becomes super good, especially after book 3)

I don't think any of these are super professionally written but the stories and characters are super good IMO.

I haven't but I read the books, I was so excited for the tv series and it was just a let down. I still wished it lasted longer though. Maybe three seasons or so.

I have never listened to audio books. I just thought it would be odd having to listen to someone else read me the story. I'm not sure if it will be some form of entertainment loss if that makes any sense?

Sometimes you may be right, it really depends on the narrator. In this case though, the narrator is James Marsters, and he does different voices for the characters. It's AMAZING.
