Does anyone know what’s up with MC’s mom and what she did?

What we do know:

• She followed the Duke into the battle field and was really effective, came back and gave birth to MC before becoming a nun and just secluding herself.
• MC may not be the duke’s kid. He specifically mentions that she looks just like her mom, but not him or “that other guy”.
• The emporer seems to have been on close terms with her, as he refers to her as “sis [name]”. So they were tight at one point, possibly he’s “that other guy”.
• ML makes a bunch of references to her doing something and has a lot of contempt for her not wrapping things up properly (implied she was too soft hearted).
• That prince dude who wants to trade out to marry her rather than her sister convinces his mom by stating who her mom is and that she may have ‘that thing’.
• Other people in court seem to be aware of something big that happened with her and don’t find the memory very pleasing.

There’re all these hints but they won’t just come out with details. What went down that caused the mom to seclude herself in recompense and what super important item is supposedly in her possession?

Adding because the latest chapter’s basically a MC mom backstory infodump

- MC’s mom is the daughter of a great general who was very in love with his wife. A royal princess of the time (sister or aunt of current emperor presumably) was super into him and angry he refused to marry her, so when MC’s grandmother went into labor the princess managed to interfere and make sure she died.

Fact came to light and the then emperor (current’s father?) felt guilty so treated her like family, going in and out of the palace and being half raised by the empress.
-Which does help explain why her and the emperor were once familiar with each other.

She grew up and followed her father onto the battle field, becoming a general in her own right.

Fell in love with the Duke and married him, willingly giving up her martial title and prestige at his wishes. But when she didn’t get pregnant for a while he wound up marrying the madam at his family’s urging. Since her father had since died and she’d given up her own titles she didn’t really have any leverage to stop it.

Of course that’s when she realized that she’s pregnant and after giving birth becomes a nun. So initially it looks like she’s just being petty and sulking, hence abandoning MC.

There’s got to be a bit more in reference to my initial post though.


So, wild guesses ...
She has some kind of military seal that would give control of an army or something (I’ve seen similar in other works)
She has something giving her power from the palace since she was a pseudo adopted sister of the current emperor.

Anyone have any details?

So anyone has any spoilers ? Who does she actually marry? Is ML really an eunuch?

Going to clarify, the ML in not really a eunuch. There are several times he’s messing around with the MC and pops a boner and has to back off before she notices. She’s also suspicious of this and tries to verify, to no avail. He’s apparently got some method to fake it, which I don’t understand the mechanics of at all.
Also he’s got a doppelgänger locked up in a cage in his private residence. Like, tiger at the zoo style. So this dude may be the OG eunuch and he pulled a switcheroo.
(Just going by picks, it seems like right after seeing this dude and sneaking into ML’s residence he comes clean to her about the whole thing.)

So far in the raws the MC’s husband is still that young noble dude she’d been gunning for. But he’s super ill, possibly at the MC & ML’s doing. So he may die, or she might divorce him as part of their plans to ruin the family. Being a widow or divorcée, that might explain away her marrying down by marrying the ML. (Obviously politically he’s super powerful, but culturally marriage to a eunuch was considered a terrible fate)

 

One of the better manhua out there

 

I am reading this Manhua and because I liked it so much, I read the novel (translated, not that easy to read).

What I like about this manhua, it is not your typical romance story. Actually, the FL is manipulative and scheming. She was a woman betrayed in modern times and she takes that mindset to the historical past. The ML is also manipulative and scheming. So they use eachother, simple as that. Or that is how it starts out. She becomes his disciple to get him to help her. But along the way you can tell he actually cares more about her and… eventually the other way around.

There is actually quite a tragic backstory, how the ML became cruel. And also about the ML and her mother. First of all, the so-called doppelganger that is imprisoned, is the ML’s twin brother! This twin has been mentally broken by events and sometimes gets violent rages. That is why he is locked up.

ML and his twin Baili Luo are actually sons of the previous emperor and a princess from Xidi. Their mother was killed in front of their eyes. They found refuge with the grandfatherof FL, marshall Lan, who raised them like sons. His daughter, Lan Ling, became a general. Marshall Lan also had the 10th Prince in his household and raised him. This is now the current emperor and that is how the emperor knows FL’s mother.

After the old emperor died and this one won the throne, FL’s mother, Lan Ling, married FL’s father, gave up her title etc. But the new emperor (former 10th prince) was obsessed with her. Even though she was married, he ordered her into the palace and wanted to make her his concubine. He also forced ML and his twin into the palace as leverage. Lan Ling evt could leave the palace, but she was pregant with FL. It is unclear if the emperor or the father figure is FL’s real father. But to protect the Xiliang household and stay out of the emperor’s hands, she became a nun and abandonned her daughter. Lan Ling also has the token of the Ghost Army, which is what people want.
After Lan Ling left the palace, the ML and his twin were both poisoned. He had them ‘purified’, which means turning into eunuch. ML at that time seemed to be one by birth, so didn’t get the treatment. But it turns put he practiced some secret method. The emperor also sexually abused and mistreated the boys. This caused ML’s twin to loose his mind. ML however, worked hard to get status and power. But this is also for revenge. He has immense power and sway over the emperor now.

in the story, FL does marry the Little Prince De (who is part of the royal family, but not directly). But that is only so she has a safe place, or so she thinks. This husband of hers however, is not as innocent as she thought. They never actually consumate the marriage, because ML makes sure of that (and FL too). She eventually divorces her husband. And yes, she does marry the ML, even though he is a eunuch (he has enough power to make that happen).

But eventually they become more then just co-conspiritors who use eachother. ML starts to really care about her (and that is rare, he only cares about his twin otherwise). And she starts to really care about him too, so she doesn’t mind getting married to him.

There is a scene were she checks ‘his goods’ when he is unconcious and finds he is a eunuch after all. But… that turns out not to be the case. ML is indeed not a eunuch. There are hints here and there to show that he has a hard time controlling this ‘technique’ of looking like one. It is explained in the novel as some mysterious technique only someone who is still a boy (virgin) can practice.

it is a really interesting story, as more and more men start to be attracted to FL and how she gains more and more power. But there is a happy end.

What happened to ml's twin brother in the end?

 

Ah, what happens to ML’s twin. Later in the story, he is no longer imprisoned, though he is watched. Because of the trauma, he acts much like a young child and sees FL as her mother, calling her sister Ling. If you read the story, you will find that ML really looks after his twin. And FL at a certain point too,
Eventually the poisoning is undone with an antidote, although he is still like a child. The poisoning on the
ML us undone much earlier. One of the holds the Emperor has on ML is the poisoning effect. But he used a different poison on each twin. FL and her mother actually play an integral part in breaking the poison on ML.

Anyway, the twin Baili Luo, much near the end of the story, he regains his sanity. He eventually joins a temple as a buddist (while remaining a good relationship with both ML and FL).

 

In the manhua, it's from the chapter 170 that we got to know more about the twin.

This is sad story in the end cos Baili Qing ending lived alone...and Xiliang Mo goes to traveling their children and grandchildren all died but the two are still alive so Xiliang Mo become depresed

The ML became the emperor of a neighboring country and had amnesia for a while. No worries though because he would remember everything in the end. Meanwhile, back at home, the MC gave birth to twins and became the ruler behind the scene. When they reunited, they decided to merge both nations and would live happily ever after together as an imperial family
