OH WOW THEY'RE BEAUTIFUL~ Oh btw, i kinda into oriental type of art lately, i want to draw ppl in hanfu but i'm not really sure cause there is no good reference of it, like hanfu parts or pattern or whether this hanfu is from this or that dynasties, well i admit i'm quite afraid of getting it wrong cause i'm not particularly familiar with those type of clothing. I've searched literature about hanfu but it's very limited. I'm impressed with your xianxia/wuxia art, where did u usually go for reference? Or is it just from your imagination?
Oh my! Sorry for my late reply. I haven't been logging in lately. Thank you for the compliments!!! Mmm well, unless you're really doing period outfits for films and settings, I don't think you need to get the period right. Xianxia/Wuxia/Xuanhuan are steep in fantasy, so you can just mix things together to form the silhouette. The palette should ideally depend on the character; for instance if your cultivator uses water, then his or her hanfu would ideally be blue, or "watery" colors. But if you really want to look up traditional wear....... I'd tend to just get the dynasty name and look up the fashion by dynasty. Chinese garments have lot of influences and each of us are from different tribes, families and backgrounds, so even I don't wear the hanfu, and I'm not too sure. The most I've worn is the qipao. Many of us don't even wear traditional clothing during the New Year, it's always Michael Kors this, Guess that... omg, is that a Chanel blouse you're wearing!??? Yup. I would say don't worry about "wrong" or "right"! In fashion we're always looking to push boundaries and come up with new things. You can look at the overall silhouette and then forge new wear for it. Or if you really want, you can look up hanfu sold online and copy them hahaha!
