Isn't it just a Friday where people make big sales? My quick googling says that the origin of the term has something to do with thanksgiving, Philadelphia, and being in the red, but I didn't get the connection, and I didn't feel like reading the whole article to properly understand it~

Black in Black Friday comes from a old English slang "you are in the black" which basically means you are profiting~ So black Friday gives the idea that you are gaining more by buying in the day, cus many stores have sales on that day

its the day that normal people suddenly turn insane and run over others with their shopping carts. people get up at ungodly hours of the night/morning and wait for stores to open to rush in and get the best bargain and fight with others. it's the day when most people stay home, terrified of those crazy people, praying for the day to end.
Black friday happens on Novembers because it is usually the day when companies start making profit from any sale they make from this day on. Since most profits are made on December, they just need to push their November sales to increase their yearly profit. Hence the black friday sale.
Yeah on my country we also use green to say profit~ But apparently ages ago~ Accountants in (england or america dunno) used red ink to note down losses and black ink to note down profits~ So they used that slang~ I think it's a pretty old one which most people probably doesn't even know about~ But they used it anyway~
The replies are hilarious. Black Friday in in America is a tradition where sales happen during the Friday after Thanksgiving basically Nov 26th this year. This tradition came about becuase the day after Thanksgiving becuase the friday after Thanksgiving was considered the first day of Christmas shopping. It came about probably due to corporations looking to make some money and a good marketing campain, it has been the busiest shopping day of the year in the United States since 2005. This has spured another tradition called Cyber Monday the internet equivalent of Black Friday. TLDR, no one black faces, its called black cuase that means your not in the red(making monet instead of losing money) , its a big sale day.
