Spoiler: Volume I, Chapter 1: Money and the Wizard

Wizards need mediums to use magic.

There aren’t that many wizards in the empire so most of them are rich. However, Elena is poor because she has to use jewels to use her magic. The jewels shrink after she uses magic with them. All wizards have different mediums through which they can use magic.

Spoiler: Elena's background

Elena’s mother died early but she grew up with her father’s love. When Elena entered the Wizard academy, her father died while on a sinking ship. Her father was in debt. However, since Elena had powerful mana, the Wizard’s association paid off her debts and said that she could pay it back once she became a powerful wizard. Since wizards are rich, she could have easily paid off her debt of 100,000 gold within 5 years. However, Elena’s medium to use magic was jewels.

After 10 years, Elena is 21 and has only paid off 30,000 gold. Because of this, Elena basically accepts any job because she needs the money. In addition, she tries to not use magic in her daily life because she doesn’t want to waste jewels. Elena has jewels on every part of her body. She has thick earrings, necklaces, brackets on both arms, rings, and anklets.

Spoiler: Conflict

There is conflict between the Crown Prince/Mayfield family and the Empress’ faction. It is the Empress who sends assassins to the Crown Prince and Teresa.

Spoiler: Chapter 1

Elena finds a bulletin asking for help with security for 1,000 gold. The client is Prince Rotaine. Elena is confused because the imperial family already has wizards but Tolt, her Wizard Association’s mentor says it’s for something that the imperial family doesn’t know about. Even though it sounds dangerous, Elena still takes the job because she does any job for money.

Elena meets Rotaine who tells her to call him Ro. Ro says he heard Elena has the highest success rate. Rotaine says he wants to go to an auction house to get something for his fiancé Teresa. Since he came out secretly, he needs Elena’s help as security guard. When the auction starts, Elena helps Rotaine choose the jewelry because Elena realizes that Rotaine has no eye for high quality jewels. When a pair of earrings comes out, Elena tells him to get it because they are magical stones which allows a non-magician to use magic by having a magician engrave magic onto it. Rotaine buys it and gives Elena an extra 5,000 gold for her to engrave magic onto it. Elena HAPPILY agrees.

On one earring, Elena engraves a shield magic that can be used 3 times. On the other earring, Elena engraves fireball, an attack magic. In addition, if you drop blood onto the earring, only the owner of the blood can use the engraves magic. Elena hands the earrings a couple days later to the prince’s servant. Elena gets paid another 3,000 gold.

Rotaine and Duke Cedric Mayfield have tea when the servant brings the earrings. Cedric thinks that Rotiane should use the earrings instead since it’s such a valuable item. Rotaine tells Cedric that the wizard Elena engraved the magic.

A month passes. Cedric escapes a villa with Teresa as a fire breaks out and assassins are chasing after them. Among the assassins, there is a wizard so Cedric has a hard time. As a ball of fire is headed towards them, Teresa uses the shield magic from the earrings. Cedric is amazed as the magical shield is working great and even his wounds are starting to heal. As the shield gets surrounded by assassins, Teresa yells fireball. A huge fireball from the sky comes down onto the assassins. Everything except what’s inside the shield burns. Everyone is amazed.

Elena is called to the top of the Wizard’s association. She goes inside and meets a silver haired man. It’s Cedric. Cedric stares at the small brown haired girl with pumpkin colored eyes and is astonished that she made the magic earrings. Elena also stares at Cedric’s pink eyes which reminds her of pink diamonds.

Elena misunderstands when he asks about the earrings. She thinks he’s here to complain and ask for a refund. Cedric says he came to thank her. When Tolt, her mentor, learns about the earrings, he gets agitated as the magic she engraved could be worth 100,000 gold. Tolt thinks Elena is stupid and doesn’t understand money. Cedric came to give Elena 20,000 gold from Prince Rotaine as a expression of thanks for the earrings. Cedric then asks Elena to be the exclusive wizard for the duchy. Cedric offered a down payment of 100,000 gold in exchange for 3 years of work. Elena agrees not knowing about the conflict between the crown prince and the Empress.

I'm kind of sad the ML has blue eyes in the manhwa. It would be cool to see a ML with pink eyes since that is not common.

 

Tolt does not understand what debt or poverty does to people apparently. Of that for some things you need experiences at that level of wealth to truly understand their value, which someone struggling to pay off a huge debt is not going to have.
Also, he is likely a failure as a mentor, as if she can make something that valuable, then why the heck not have her make something to auction off so they can gets her debts paid off.

Does anyone have real spoilers for the novel?

 

So far, the ML in the novel seems to be a total simp for the FL. He constantly thinks she's pretty and that she's amazing when she's fighting. He's already jealous when she touches another man and he's only known her for a couple days lol

There seems to be some differences from the first chapter of the manhwa and the novel so we'll see.

I'm looking forward to the manhwa adaptation of the carriage fight/attack though. She pierces someone with an ice sword. Hopefully they include that scene because I think it is in that scene that the ML starts to really fall for the FL.

Spoiler: Volume I, Chapter 2: The Duke and the Wizard

Spoiler: Why Cedric hires Elena

When Elena arrives at the Mayfield duchy, she is determined to work hard because she was given a lot of money. She is told that she will mostly be escorting Teresa.

One of the reasons Cedric asked Elena to be the exclusive wizard was because he was afraid that Elena would help the Empress. Since she is such a great wizard, he wanted her on his side. Cedric knew that Elena loves money because her medium is jewels so he offered her a lot of money.

Spoiler: Shopping with Teresa

Elena and Teresa decide to go shopping together. Elena gets ready by putting on her usual jewelry. Teresa sees Elena’s mismatched jewelry and thinks it’s too much and weird. Elena doesn’t care since her magic works through any jewels- the design doesn’t matter. Teresa goes to Cedric and drags him so that he can see Elena’s jewelry. He gets shocked at her appearance. His first thought is that she’s pretty. Then he thinks that she has too many excessive jewels on her. Everyone in the entire mansion is staring at Elena. Elena gets confused as the wizards she used to live with always praised her style. Cedric whispers to Teresa that she can buy jewelry for Elena as long as she goes not offend Elena. Teresa happily declares that she will buy a lot. Elena gets nervous when Teresa says they will go shopping for Elena’s jewelry. When they go shopping, Teresa orders Elena’s dresses to be decorated with crushed diamonds. Teresa also orders a lot of jewelry for Elena.

Spoiler: Carriage Attack

On their way back in the carriage, Elena senses that someone is following them. The coachman says it will take 15 more minutes to get back to the mansion at the current speed. Elena orders him to go faster and to arrive within 10 minutes and she will be able to protect the carriage during that time. Elena can tell that there are 10 people following them. 3 with mana, and 7 without. Elena has taken a lot of jobs requiring combat in the past, so she is a good fighter.

While the carriage is going full speed, Elena opens the door and gets on top of the carriage. Magic spells start to fly towards the carriage. Elena uses part of her pearl necklace to stop the attacks. She then puts a protective shield around the carriage. After using the rest of her pearls, Elena causes a lightening to strike the attackers. When they are closer to the mansion, one of the assassin wizard starts to use large scale magic. Elena has 9 rings and some bracelets left and that may not be enough. She uses all her jewelry to create an ice barrier. The assassin uses a fire attack and the ice barrier starts melting. Elena gets impressed by the wizard assassin. An assassin jumps in front of Elena but she pierces him with an ice sword. As they start entering the gates, Elena rips jewels from the carriage door and jumps off the carriage. The sky begins to turn black and thick fog surrounds them. As the air gets more damp, lightning begins to pour down from the sky.

Spoiler: Cedric's POV of the Carriage Attack

The mansion is freaking out but Cedric stays calm and says nothing will happen. He sees Elena on top of the carriage which is running at full speed. He sees her in action and is impressed since she looks so small. When she jumps off the carriage, he gets worried that she might fall, but she’s fine. He stares as the jewel she is holding decreases in size and lightening coming down. Cedric squeezes his eyes shut but Elena asks him to turn on the magic shield system that is programmed. He turns it on. Elena says the wizard assassin already left but poured lightening down as a threat. He thinks to himself that Elena is so cool as his heart pounds loudly.

Spoiler: Elena learns of the conflict

They go to Cedric’s office and he apologizes. He says that they never encountered an attack of such scale due to the conflict. Elena has no idea what he’s talking about since she doesn’t know about the conflict between him and the empress. Cedric is surprised but he explains the conflict. The crown Prince is the only son of the precious empress and the current empress is trying to get her 5 year old son to get on the throne. The current emperor’s health is deteriorating so if the crown Prince stays alive, he will become emperor.

Backstory: the late empress was from a fallen noble house. The emperor was coerced into getting a queen. The late empress could not accept the situation and die of anxiety. Until now, the emperor has protected Rotaine. But since the emperor is now sick, Rotaine and his fiancé Teresa are in danger.

When Cedric realizes that Elena did not know, he tells her that she can quit since it is dangerous and her life may be in danger. Elena strongly refuses because she doesn’t want to return the money. She doesn’t want to go back being in debt. Cedric looks at her worriedly. Elena actually wishes that they would renew her contract after 3 years because Cedric is so generous with money and jewels. Elena decides to work hard. Cedric thinks that she’s just really passionate about her work.

Spoiler: Rotaine visits the duchy

Elena works in recharging the magic stone that is within the mansion since it’s mana was used to shield the mansion. Cedric guides her to the magic stone. He kindly explains the system to her. When they meet the Prince later, Elena is surprised at how cold Cedric is to the Prince. Cedric gets angry at Rotaine for coming to the duchy without any escorts. Cedric asks Rotaine is he knows how many people are counting on him. Rotaine looks at Teresa and bluffs that he’s the crown Prince so Cedric should not raise his voice at him. Elena thinks Rotaine is crazy.

Cedric smiles at Elena tells Elena to stay with Teresa and takes Rotaine for a personal conversation. Elena gets goosebumps at Cedric’s smile. Cedric drags Rotiane out. Elena doesn’t understand the power dynamic as the Duke is scolding the Crown Prince. Elena looks at Teresa but Teresa looks calm, as if this happens often. Teresa says that Rotaine grew up with them since the late empress died early and that Cedric has trained Rotaine. Teresa says that Rotaine is impulsive so he needs to be scolded once in a while. Rotaine returns with red eyes while Cedric is smiling. Cedric casually sits next to Elena and says that Rotaine will stay the night. Elena looks at Rotaine’s eye and swipes it with her thumb. The red color disappears immediately. Elena asks Teresa if she can also do it on the other eye. Teresa allows it. Cedric looks at Elena and asks if she had to touch him. Elena responds that she had to touch him, otherwise she would have had to use jewels. Cedric quickly states that he will buy her a lot of jewels. Elena just nods. Cedric guides Elena to her room apologizes but asks Elena if she can go with Rotaine to the palace tomorrow. Elena says it’s no big deal. Cedric then tells her that a jeweler comes by monthly so Elena can buy jewelry every month. Elena smiles widely since nobles get the first pick of jewelry. Cedric smiles while starting at Elena. He just stands there so Elena asks if he has anything else to say. He awkwardly leaves.

Elena dresses up the next day and puts on as much jewelry as possible. She also fills her pockets with jewels. She proudly leaves the room while looking satisfied at her appearance.

And yes! As the person below you stated, it's "Ellin's Solhwa!" One of my favs

 

I went ahead and read the raws for the manhwa and it seems like the manhwa artist changed A LOT of things. I think it would be more accurate to say the manhwa is a very loose adaption of the novel. The setting and the character names are the same but a lot of things are different.

The biggest different is the ML. In the novel, he is smitten by her from the very start. He thinks she’s pretty and badass when she fights. In the manhwa, he is actively rude to her and does not like her at first. In addition, the FL comes off as liking money more in the manhwa than in the novel.

For those who want spoilers on the manhwa, I don’t think the novel is of much help.

 

Thank God. Someone also noticed. It was so different from the novel. I like the art but the artist was not true to the source material.

 

Yeah, I was very confused when reading the manhwa. It seems like a completely different story.

The main leads are snappy with each other in the manhwa. Whereas in the novel, they seem to respect each other. FL sees ML as a very generous person and ML sees FL as a capable wizard.

Also, this confused me but in the manhwa, the ML seems to hate magic and wizards as he doesn’t even use magic stones which are basically treated as trash in his basement. In the novel, the ML’s mansion has a magic stone system for safety that he uses when in danger. His character is completely different.

I wonder if the artist just wanted the “Cold Duke” trope so they changed his personality. They even gave him some classic childhood trauma as he seems to suffer from nightmares in the manhwa.

At first, when I read the 1st chapter. The reason why Elena wearing bunch of jewelry is to look like a rich wizard from tower pfft

Terion is likely to be the 2nd ML. He is Elena's childhood friend from the tower that suddenly disappeared years ago before the plot started. He was the empress's exclusive wizard and seems to be..... The empress fancy him is he one of the assasin wizard who attack the carriage? Since the empress command him to eliminate Elena or something because she will be a hindrance to her plan.
