For those who are interested in this story like me but not enough to MTL it, this is a summary of what happens. The official translations left off with the end of the cat torturer incident. Now he wants to enter negotiations with Master Kun, a contemporary of Tang Qiye (Ye Hao's father-in-law). Zheng Tan acts as intermediary to set up a meeting. Zheng Tan and Heijin tie/lock up the knocked out traffickers. Er Mao and Walnut show up to capture them. They call in backup and capture the rest of the traffickers on the mountain. After his revenge, 68 leaves Zheng Tan his business card. Zheng Tan is taken to Linzhou city by Charlie (Mr. Gou's assistant) in order to represent Green Wing in a pet show. He has to work with a pretty woman for his performance. The announcer for the event is a woman named Gong Qin. Zheng Tan amazes everyone during his performance with his intelligence. Papa Jiao finishes his work abroad and picks up Zheng Tan from Linzhou city. Papa Jiao meets with his new interns. The Jiao family and interns go to the university's wilderness base for field training. Zheng Tan runs into a strange cat that burns down an amateur taxidermy enthusiast's house. He later follows the cat into the wilderness and reaches somewhere with a lot of red-furred animals. Zheng Tan stays a few days and even eats a snake raw, but he doesn't want to mate with the cat. Back in Chuhua city, Professor Lan discovers the uniqueness of the sprouts and takes charge in raising them. Apparently it will take a couple years before the orchids will bloom. Qin Tao comes to visit Er Mao but he has become a lot more violent. He thinks that he has been drugged or influenced in some way but can't find any evidence and can only beg Er Mao for help. Zheng Tan suspects that the drugs were injected with a needleless injector, and sends spam to Qin Tao mentioning this tech as a clue. Now that they know how it was done, Qin Tao and Er Mao takes care of the problem. Qin Tao's dad comes to find him and the two make up. Er Mao and Gong Qin get married. Jiao Yuan enters high school (and stays at the dorms). Gu Youzi enters middle school. The Jiao family and Yuan Zhiyi (Papa Jiao's friend and business partner) go visit Nanhua city. They run into Zheng Xuan (the family they met on the road when they first went to Jiao village) and are invited to a business dinner at Guqin restaurant. While there, Zheng Tan recognizes his womanizing father. A jilted boyfriend/husband starts attacking people with a knife. Zheng Tan helps take care of him, then rushes downstairs to try and find himself (he remembers that he confronted his dad in this situation). Zheng Tan runs after his car but is unable to catch up. A certain Chairman Shu thinks that Zheng Tan was scared off by his dog. Chairman Shu invites Papa Jiao and Yuan Zhiyi to another restaurant as apology where they discuss business. He introduces Boss Cai, the restaurant owner, and asks them for help in establishing a branch in Chuhua city. Zheng Tan also manages to catch a glimpse of his mother. When they return to Chuhua city, Zheng Tan helps connect them with Ye Hao. Zheng Tan is playing with his phone in the tree hole until late at night. Two men start climbing the tree to hide something in the tree hole but Zheng Tan makes them back off. Eventually, the two of them hide something in the bushes. Zheng Tan retrieves it and finds that it's a bag of artificial diamonds. He later goes to the Chemistry department of the university to see if any diamonds went missing there. Spoiler: Chapters 300+ Zheng Tan finds Tang Mo at the Chemistry department and also when he goes looking for Master Kun. Boss Huang, a grocery store owner, allows them to take shelter at his store. Some scoundrels come in and try to force their way into buying goods underpriced, and with counterfeit bills at that. Boss Huang subdues one while Daisy threatens the other one into inaction. The scoundrels are kicked out. Later on, Papa Jiao and Mr. Li both come to the store and thank the owner with gifts for sheltering their pets during the storm. Mr. Guo gets wind of this and films a segment on the store to promote the act of being nice to animals. Er Mao sees the video on the pet center website and recognizes Boss Huang as someone he calls the "Weasel." Zheng Tan is brought along by Er Mao and gets a display of the Weasel's abilities when the scoundrels return with a gang of men. The Weasel hypnotizes the leader with only a stare and a cigarette. The leader leads his men away with no idea what happened. Er Mao warns the Weasel not to try it on Zheng Tan but he tries it in secret anyway. Zheng Tan is unaffected by his hypnosis. The Weasel takes Er Mao and Zheng Tan along on a supply run. On the way, they see a policeman surnamed Liao at work and the Weasel tells them that this is a good policeman. Professor Lan tells Zheng Tan that the orchids he brought back are about to bloom. Weeks go by but the orchids refuse to bloom. Professor Lan racks his brain and invites other experts as well, but no one knows the reason and can only acknowledge the orchids are truly special. Professor Lan settles down and just decides to be patient. The orchids finally bloom and the flowers are like jade. Professor Lan names the orchid variety as "Jade Cat Immortal" and puts it up on exhibition at the botanical garden. The Jiao family go to the botanical garden to view the flowers. There is such a huge crowd of experts and reporters that they cannot catch a glimpse. Zheng Tan runs into Tan Qiye and Duke at the gardens. It turns out that an old professor had taken in a pregnant cat many years ago. The cat gave birth to Duke and died. Duke had secretly lived in the garden being raised by the professor before he latched on to Ye Hao and Tan Qiye. Every year, Duke will come and kill a bird as an offering at his mother's grave. Duke recognizes and tolerates the professor's grandchildren playing with him. The orchids create a buzz on the internet (the flowers are worth 10 million each) and suddenly get stolen from the botanical garden. Professor Lan becomes sick from the shock. Zheng Tan enlists the help of Master Kun, and 68 to help track the orchids down. Master Kun provides the license plate number of the getaway car. 68 uses it to track down the "Mole", the one who provided the thieves with the car. Zheng Tan introduces 68 to Officer Liao to capture the Mole. Afterwards, 68 is introduced to the Weasel who handles the questioning. 68 sends the info to the police and eventually the orchids are found and returned. Professor Lan recovers and decides to keep the orchids in his own greenhouse/garden. He beefs up security, hiring guards, and even takes Zheng Tan along to choose two puppies for him. The yellow mutt is named Qianli and the tiger striped mutt is named Shunfeng, later changed to Shunzi (due to the name clashing with the courier service). The puppies and Sheriff become guard dogs for Professor Lan's greenhouse/garden. Zheng Tan gets sick and falls into a coma for a week. While sick, he seems to sense/control what his human counterpart is doing. Zheng Tan recovers perfectly from his mysterious illness. Er Mao, Wei Leng, their children, and Kitten Zhuo visit Zheng Tan during his illness. Zheng Tan finds a pen and decides to confirm his existence. He writes on the wall of an abandoned tiled building, "Zheng Heitan was here. December 12, 2009." Kitten Zhuo gives Zheng Tan a cat-sized bicycle for Christmas. Papa Jiao is selected as one of the province's 10 most outstanding young educators. He attends the reward ceremony with Yuan Zhiyi who is selected as one of the 10 most outstanding businessmen. At the ceremony, Papa Jiao ask for autographs for his family from all the celebrities. One of the celebrities didn't have a good attitude so Jiao Yuan throws away her autograph. Zheng Tan makes a popular post slamming the media for focusing on the celebrity guests instead of the awardees, the actual stars of the event. Zheng Tan takes Jiao Yuan and his group of friends to the VIP room at Triumph to celebrate their high school graduation. Xiong Xiong is the only one of them who will stay on at Chuhua University. Jiao Yuan will leave for Beijing University, Su An to Ning University, Lan Tianzhu to Nanhua University, and Fu Lei to another school in Chuhua city. The Jiao family goes to Beijing to send off Jiao Yuan. They stay at Fang Shaokang's home for a few days. Yang Yi contacts Papa Jiao to discuss having Zheng Tan in another movie but gets declined. Mama Jiao finds a fashion magazine featuring Li Wei and Zheng Tan on the cover. Yang Yi discovers that one of his celebrities was rude to Papa Jiao at the earlier reward ceremony and basically "grounds" her. Gu Youzi has moved on to high school and staying in the dorms. Zheng Tan is lonely and rides his bicycle in the empty house. He reads Gu Youzi's diary. At Beijing, he ran into Huo Junyi and decides to go over the box of treasures he received from him all those years ago. He adds a line to the wall of the abandoned tiled building, "September 9, 2010." Yi Xin returns from abroad and becomes a professor but still works closely with Papa Jiao. Er Mao and Wei Leng's families take Zheng Tan (and his box of treasures) along to visit their master. They make a stop at Pei Liang's hometown. Zheng Tan goes looking for the orchids again but they have been burned away by a fire with only a few small sprouts left. Zheng Tan teaches a little monkey to water it and also teaches the rest of the monkeys to throw things into trash cans instead of digging through them. Pei Jie takes his 10 year old youngest son Pei Jie along to visit his master. Zheng Tan finally meets Dashan (meaning Big Mountain), the mountain lion who is their master's cat. Dashan is 20 years old and has his own personal masseur/acupuncturist, Uncle Lin. Uncle Lin is surprised by Zheng Tan but cannot find an explanation for his week-long illness. Dashan takes Zheng Tan along on a few walks and Zheng Tan teaches him to use a lighter... On their walks, the cats discover some suspicious men trafficking animals. Spoiler: Chapters 400+ Er Mao, Wei Leng, and Pei Liang visit an acquaintance and find a suspicious man. They follow him to the house of Dakang, scaring him off and preventing Da Kang's murder. The man is part of a group of drug traffickers using animals as their drug mules. Da Kang and his brother Da Zhi are snake trainers and Da Zhi was unknowingly providing snakes as drug mules. Da Zhi secretly released a snake from captivity and disappeared. Pei Jie is kidnapped along with Zheng Tan's box of treasures. Zheng Tan brings Dashan along and discover Pei Jie at the traffickers' camp they found on their walk. Dashan returns to bring the humans while Zheng Tan stays. Zheng Tan retrieves some sort of mechanical dart gun from his box along with tranquilizer and stun bullets. He takes down all 6 traffickers one by one and release Pei Jie before the others get there. Uncle Lin adopts the only surviving animal, a red panda. It's December when Zheng Tan returns to Chuhua city. Qu Xiangyang has moved out and the Jiao family's new neighbors are 3 female students. Sheriff and the two dogs are getting along well while guarding Professor Lan's plants together. Xiong Xiong is interested in a girl at another university (the one that Zheng Tan visited with Tan Fang). He bikes to a flower shop for flowers before taking a taxi to see her every time. His bike gets stolen so he asks Zheng Tan to come along and look after his bike whenever he does this. People become interested in Zheng Tan due to this frequent sight, including a young man with a backpack who takes the bus nearby. Luckily, a cat from a nearby restaurant is an attention seeker and manages to relieve Zheng Tan's pressure. Zheng Tan meets Nine again who mentions that she's dropping out of high school to travel around with private tutoring and will take the college exams in 2 years at another province. She mentions Master Kun's 13 guards/enforcers, one of whom is known as Black Cat. (Strong indications that Black Cat is the bus-riding young man with a backpack who likes cats.) Xiong Xiong succeeds in his romantic pursuit. Jin and his band New Boy hold a Christmas concert on campus as the last part of their tour. They are extremely famous now and the college Guitars Association also enjoys reflected popularity. At the end of the concert, they perform Cat's Fantasy and coincidentally Sheriff comes on stage to perform as well. Sheriff starts trending as the barking cat that inspired the song Cat's Fantasy. Kitten Zhuo is depressed at the thought that he might be getting a stepdad. After some investigation, Zheng Tan learns that Yue Cheng was probably also a participant of project A and met Little Zhuo there. Yue Cheng and Kitten Zhuo hit it off. Little Zhuo and Yue Cheng get married. Zheng Tan adds "February 28, 2011" to the wall of the tiled building. In April, Zheng Tan gets sick again for 3 days. He dreams/experiences being his human counterpart again. Zheng Tan and some other pets hold a farewell performance and retire from the pet center advertisments. Sesame and Dog (the cat with amputated forelegs) become the new pillars of the pet center. Time passes until it becomes September 2012. Gu Youzi is a high school senior. Fatty Wei and Er Yuan have entered kindergarten. Feng Baijin has graduated and started developing video games. Zheng Tan helps a bald bus driver beat his grandson's high score in a video game and becomes a frequent passenger. Zheng Tan starts arguing with someone online who insists that the world will end on 2012-12-21. The other person tries to make Zheng Tan bet that he'll become the cat in his avatar if he's wrong. Zheng Tan: I'm already a cat! Over the next half year, Zheng Tan keeps dreaming of his human counterpart. The pet center cannot find anything wrong with him. In June, Zheng Tan looks at the calendar and recalls that it was around this time when he was a human that he time travelled to the past as a cat. On June 8, Papa and Mama Jiao take Gu Youzhi to her college exams. Zheng Tan stays at home and disappears. Zheng Tan wakes up as his human counterpart. He travels to Chuhua university. He sees the words and dates he wrote on the abandoned tiled building. He recognizes people but they don't recognize him. The pets can tell that he is the same cat that they've always known. The story ends when he opens the door to meet Papa Jiao and Gu Youzi. Spoiler: Extras One chapter about Sheriff in the days after Zheng Tan's disappearance as a cat and before his reappearance as a human. One chapter about Fatty's origins, his training under the old lady's son, and his life on campus. One short chapter about Tiger. A mischievous child stuffs a walnut between his tucked paws just like Zheng Tan used to do with stones. One chapter about Professor Qin and General, as well as some focus on Er Mao and Peanut. There is mention of someone living on the fourth floor. (Strong indications that this is Zheng Tan.) One chapter about Jiao Wei and his middle school classmates, their past and their present. At the end, there is mention of a young man struggling with his studies outside the East District residential building, accompanied by three cats. (Strong indications that this is Zheng Tan.)
Zheng Tan walks up to the apartment when Papa Jiao and Gu Youzi are talking inside. We are only told that he hears their voices, not what they are saying. The final chapter literally ends as he is opening the door. It's an open ending. The extras seem to indicate that Zheng Tan is now living on the fourth floor of the building and attending Chuhua university. I'd like to think that he told the Jiao family the truth, but we can't be certain. Maybe he just introduced himself as a new neighbor when he opened the door and managed to finagle the apartment on his own.
