It was to abolish slavery. I'll add more spoilers as the story progresses but it's a bit slow and even a lot of commenters are saying they want to drop it for how slow it's going since the FL is a bit frustrating atm
Ok after many of what feels like short chapters. I've finally got some more to spoil: Spoiler: Diplomatic Mission Part 1 Before leaving for the diplomatic trip. Leila thought she'd hand over some info to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marquis Valdir. This involves going to outside part of the palace which she's never been to. Usually the other add Ver will do all the work that relies going to the outside part but this time Ver was no where in site so she thought she'd deliver it herself. When she got there, Marquis Valdir wasn't there but his aide, his son, was. She wanted to hand the data to the minister in person but since she wasn't there she asked his son/aide to deliver the papers to him. When she left the office, the son threw the papers in the trash. The emperor Kalian assigns the captain of the imperial knights and his sorta shadow guy, Hilton, to secretly protect Leila and to not let her know he's there. As the whole entourage travels to a city on the port for the diplomatic meeting. The whole time everyone especially the guy in charge of everything Marquis Valdir kept calling Leila "Young lady" and even though she said she doesn't need any preferential treatment they kept insisting the Young Lady take the last room or whatever causing the rest of the guys to grumble. At the port town, the man in charge of that town is a Navy Admiral, Marquis Hutton. He has 2 sons. The first son left early and devoted his life to god (I guess became a priest or something). The 2nd son was a huge player called Aldor. Aldor obviously eyes Leila when he first sees her. When they arrive they told her she can rest until the dinner banquet and is assigned a maid to serve her. The maid suggests she go out since she has time. Leila says ok but needs to ask Marquis Valdir for permission first. Valdir says sure and gives her a carriage. She goes out, does some sight seeing and buys souvenirs for everyone including the emperor. When she gets back she finds that everyone just finished a diplomatic meeting. Valdir claims that she shrugged off her duties and went sightseeing instead. She said you guys never told me there was a meeting. Valdir asks the man who reported the schedule and the man said he told her. Other men said they heard him tell her. Everyone was sneering at her since she couldn't say anything otherwise. For the banquet, Marquis Valdir sends a super beautiful dress with matching shoes and accessories. The maid is super excited and keeps wanting Leila to try it on. Leila tells her to bring her tea. The maid asks which tea she would like. Leila says the darkest tea. The maid thinks it's an odd request (normally you say Earl Grey or whatever). When she brings it, Leila asks to be alone and leave the dress so she can admire looking at it. When the maid comes back. Leila goes.. oh my... I accidentally spilled tea all over the dress so I can't wear it tonight. I'll just go in my uniform. Aldor Hutton comes to Leila's door to escort her to the banquet all high on his horse. Leila turns him down and goes alone. At the banquet she meets the other diplomats from the Kingdom of Natsha. Among the diplomats of the Natsha Kingdom there's 1 woman who looks seems to be super cool named Diane. Leila thinks she wants to talk to Diane but shouldn't/can't because they are diplomats from rival countries. That night Kalian speaks to her with a magic messenger (only audio, no video). Leila starts crying as she hears his voice. He asks if Marquis Valdir said something to her to upset her and then says he must've. He tells her to remember one thing that she's his agent. She then asks him how far can she go and do in the negotiations. He says as far as she wants to. Spoiler: Diplomatic Mission Part 2 Leila attends the the diplomatic meeting the next day. Since she's the emperor's agent she's technically supposed to sit at the top but yeilds to Sir Valdir for some reason saying class hierarchy (whatever). But she tells everyone that it's ok to call her "Miss/Young Lady" while in private but she's the emperor's agent so they must call her Sir Thebesa in public. The meeting starts and she just listens at first. Natsha Kingdom wants some island back because they claim their ancestors founded that island but if the empire doesn't want to go give it back because it's become a den for pirates and it's obvious the empire can't manage it. Marquis Valdir was about to say they'll hand over the island when Leila interrupted him and said they won't hand it over. She mentions that the island was somehow passed onto the empire and she has documented proof. Diane says then give them a GINORMOUS compensation. Leila says no way it's way too much. Then proposes a cooperation because it seems that the Natsha Kingdom is slowly running out of food and will starve soon. They have to import grain from the empire to survive but there's currently a limit on how much they can import. Leila says Natsha should send some if it's super strong navy and work with the Empire to escort merchant ships and wipe out the pirates, and in turn they'll take off the ban of exported grain to Natsha and even give them a cutback on the import taxes. Of course they take it and then more detailed talks will take place with the ministers later (Leila has done her part she's not needed for the rest). After the meeting Marquis Valdir starts yelling at Leila why she withheld such information from him about the Natsha Kingdom. She says she did hand it to him. She handed it to his aide/son to give to him. Valdir asks his son and his son said yeah he just tossed it coz they don't need anything from her. Diane and Leila finally talk and hang out and become besties. Spoiler: Leila gets attacked Marquis Hutton admires Leila and can see that she's super smart and thinks the rumors that she's the emperor's mistress is false and she broke off her engagement. His son Aldor is stupid so he wants Leila as his daughter-in-law so he can pass on his territory and she can help his son run it (doesn't this sound like her ex and his family again...?). He sends her a dress this time for the celebratory banquet. Leila says ok to wear this dress since it's a celebration. The maid was supppper defensive about this dress not Leila get anywhere near it until it was time to wear. As for accessories she doesn't want to wear the ones that Marquis Valdir sent her so she just wears the magic crystal necklace that Kalian gave her. Aldor Hutton once again comes to escort her to the banquet and she refuses him again. On the way to the banquet hall, she meets Diane. Diane is wearing some super rique dress that has a slit all the way up her leg. Diane says Leila looks beautiful and Leila says no Diane is. Diane tells Leila she'd look better in a dress she's wearing because whisper "she has a better body". Leila gets all embarrassed and they enter the hall. As she talks to Diane, Diane mentions that Leila is the emperor's mistress (as a good thing like well you have the emperor the other guys here are nothing). Leila gets all offended that Diane believed the rumors that were going around and distances herself from Diane. She starts knocking down glasses of champagne (*rolls eyes* why...). Aldor asks for a dance and says his dad is pressuring him so if she would agree to dance with him once and then drink a glass of champagne with him then his dad will let him go. She says ok. After she drinks the glass of champagne he goes away as he says. Then she downs a few more glasses (why oh why.. soooo many comments on how stupid she is. She's supposed to be representing the emperor and empire as a diplomat so why drink that much?) Obviously she's drunk now so decides to retire early. The asks the maid to guide her to her room. Meanwhile, Hilton (the emperor's shadow knight) has been shadowing Leila the whole time and sends daily reports to Kalian via magic messenger. He tells Kalian that he has to stay back a bit further because Marquis Hutton is super sharp (as a Navy admiral should be). Hilton tells Kalian about what happened with Aldor. Kalian says it seems that Aldor is interested in her. Kalian tells Hilton to kill anyone who dares to do anything Leila wouldn't like. Hilton asks what does he mean anything Leila wouldn't like. Kalian says if someone touches her body without her permission. When she wakes up she asks her maid to help her undress and then notices that the person to answers isn't her maid but Aldor. It appears that she's in his bedroom. Aldor tries to force himself on her and says that no one will believe her over him and his father. She is reminded of her past with her step-brother and how no one believed her at that time. She starts wondering if Kalian would also not believe her but then finally finds some backbone and says she trusts Kalian. He rips the top of her dress and just as he was about to see more, she remembers that her magic crystal necklace as a transformation spell. So she transforms her arm to be huge and then punches Aldor and he goes flying. Just in time for Diane and Hilton to burst thru the door. Marquis Hutton comes in as well and starts backing his son who says that Leila was the one who was seducing him. She was on his bed when he came in. Diane tries to fight for Leila but isn't getting anywhere. Leila also finally decides to speak up but of course it's her word vs Aldor's and his fathers. Finally, Leila says fine... let's have a holy trial. The holy trial is usually used for criminals to get a confession and they have some method were it generally breaks the person afterwards. But she says she's willing to risk it since it seems to be the only way she can prove her innocence since the maid who guided her to this room disappeared. Aldor is scared out of his mind and keeps asking his father not to but his father has some confidence somewhere and says Aldor will do it. Diana says she wants to say something to Leila when she gets back. Leila said ok hopefully she won't be to broken then. She decides to have the trial right away even if it's at night in case Hutton tries to pull something. On the way to the temple Hilton rides with Aldor and Marquis Hutton constantly watching Aldor. The whole time Hutton keeps acting all confident asking Leila if she's sure she can just push it under the rug and marry Aldor. She refuses and says she wants the trial. They are greeted by some bishop who seems very kind. She says both of them need to stand the holy trial. Aldor keeps begging not to but finally agrees to do it. They have to chairs in some interrogation room side by side. They are then blind folded and are put on a wreathe of laurels on their head with thorns that hurts (think Jesus). Leila acts all calm but her hands are shaking like crazy. The bishop whispers into her ear... don't worry it'll be ok. Then all the sudden Aldor is screaming and confessing that he did it and Leila was innocent. When her blindfold is released she sees Aldor on the floor sweating like crazy (maybe even wet himself). Bishop tells Leila they hadn't even started the trial yet and Aldor just confessed. Hutton and Hilton come in and Aldor once again says Leila is innocent so they leave. Before leaving she asks the bishop what did he do? The bishop said it's a secret but it seems that she has a great guard (Hilton). (The commenters are wondering if the bishop is Hutton's first son who devoted his life to God. Maybe that's why the Marquis was acting all confident?) Spoiler: Going back to the Capital When they get back Diana tells Leila that she's sorry about believing the rumors and asks if she can call Leila by her first name (this whole time she was calling her Sir Thebesa). They agree to keep as friends and call each other by their first names. Hilton follows her everywhere now that he's been exposed. She starts wondering how Hilton has been eating, sleeping, etc. It must not have been comfortable. She asks Hilton if he could not report what happened with Aldor to Kalian and he says it's against the emperor's orders. She says she'll tell Kalian herself what happened just give her some time. He says ok but he won't wait too long. He also tells her that he was supposed to kill Aldor under Kalian's orders and tells her what the orders were. Leila says don't kill Aldor or anyone since you don't want to. Hilton gets emotional/embarrassed that Leila knows what he's thinking and literally runs away. As they are leaving, Diana tells Leila she should come to Natsha Kingdom and naturalize. Over there they seem to have equal rights for men and women and don't look down on smart women. Diana says Leila isn't treated right here. Leila finally thinks omg...someone else thinks I'm not treated right? It's not just me thinking that? (well duh) Leila then thinks that it would be great to take the offer but she's reminded of Kalian and all he's done for her and doesn't want to let him down so she refuses. She invites Diana to come to the capital some time and she'll show her around. Leila asks Hilton to ride with her in her carriage since it'll be more comfortable and tells him wouldn't it be safer and easier to protect her that way. As they ride in the carriage Hilton doesn't say anything she offers him some cookies that the maid gave her when she was leaving. Hilton eats it and when she is about to eat one he slaps it out of her hand saying not to eat it, it's poisoned. She says lets go to the temple to get healed but Hilton says he's been trained and has a tolerance to poison so he's fine. But since then he has to taste everything before Leila can eat/drink. Leila says no and he says let him do his job so she shuts up. Along the way he tells her different ways to tell poison 1) use silver but a lot can't be detected this way now 2)identify by taste or smell but that's dangerous 3) make the person who gave it to you eat it (they won't if they put poison). At the inn Marquis Valdir tells Leila that his subordinates ask her to let the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have all the credit of this negotiation. She refuses immediately. Valdir says that's quick and she said she's refused so many times already (many people kept asking her this). She finally tells him ok... how about we say that it wasn't that you "couldn't do" anything it's that you "didn't do" anything to allow me to prove my worth and show off my skills. He finally agreed. Spoiler: Meanwhile with Parsley and Philene While Leila was off on her mission. Philene kept trying to see her at her house and then was called to go home coz Parsley (nickname the commenters gave Paisley) was going into (fake) labor. As he gets home he says the child was still born because Parsley was poisoned. The doctor telling him all this wasn't his family doctor but some doctor Parsley hired. Then her maid said oh well she saw Misa (the other maid that helped our MC and cared about our MC when she was still here) put something in Parsley's soup or something. They have the empty bottle and says it must've been poison/abortion drug that caused her to miscarry. Parsley pretends to be all weak (even tries not to eat for awhile to get all thin) and whatever while Philene visits her going where's my baby etc. Philene comforts her but then never comes back again. He's yelling at everyone to find out what happened. They later find Misa dead with a knife her chest (noooo not Misa) saying it must be suicide. They then say oh well the drugs were probably from Leila and Misa was Leila's maid. So Philene goes ballistic. At the palace, I think Kalian got word of this and told Ver to investigate because both he and Ver don't think Leila would have done something like this. While on the way back Leila was missing Misa and thinking she'll write to Misa so see how she is when she gets back (T_T) A lot of the commenters are complaining the they're dropping the novel and that Leila is so stupid and it's frustrating. I too am very frustrated with how she acts and thinks. Well we got to remember she had a horrible past and was groomed to always feel inferior etc. I think this story is one of those slow burners trying to show her development as a character from a smart and weak person to become a stronger character that eventually no one looks down on? It's just slow and painful. But there is growth.
I kinda agree, she is smart but stupid at the same time, her carelessness almost cost her life, is she that shocked that Diane believed the rumor to the point she drunk like there is no tomorrow. And what kind of person who just told the random maid to throw the poison like you are gonna throw some old newspaper (and not even her trusted maid), she should just throw it away herself, if she has no intention to use the poison, why would she keep it for so long in her drawer and only throw it away before she leave for good, she is lucky parsley (I don't remember her name) didn't found it when she is still in the mansion, I mean parsley even rummaging through her closet before. But alas poor Misa has to bear the consequences of her stupid master huh. I guess that's why in ROS the translation is a bit slow, barely once a week, usually if the translator found the story interesting, they would open up the kofie donation and released a few chapter altogether.
Oh my bad I thought the translations got to that point. It was exactly Parsley that found it. Or rather her maids. Spoiler: Parsley finds the pills They were rummaging through Leila's stuff after she left and found the 2 bottles: 1 red pill and 1 blue pill that Leila's stepmom gave her. She had a doctor analyze the pills and was told that 1 was for abortion (blue) and 1 was for fertility (red). I'm reminded of the matrix. So then Parsley hatched her plan when she saw the 2 pills. She was impatient and asked her maid which pill was which. Her maid forgot so she said the red pill was the abortion drug so she took the red pill (I'm guessing this is obviously going to bite her in the end). But yeah you're right. A lot of people were complaining in the comments too like why don't you just dispose of it and not just keep it around. Oh some more I forgot to add to the last post and I just read: Spoiler: On the way back PT2 Well this sort of started while Leila was away. But since Kalian gave her the title of Baron he thought he needed to bestow upon Leila a new mansion as well that was bigger and better than the one she has now. But of course he's super picky. Poor Ver is going crazy trying to find a place. He wants a place that's: close to the capital, far away from Duke Williot (Her ex), not in a downtown area(too noisy), but not in an outer area, have good security, no questionable neighbors, and moderately large in size. Ver showed Kalian 6 or so properties and they were all turned down because of the above criteria. Ver said this is impossible and then said wait there is a place. Kalian as where? Ver said right here (the imperial palace). He was kidding because only royalty can stay at the imperial palace other than vips that were visiting. Of course Kalian was like. Great idea! Let's do that! Leila will live here! Also since her attack, Leila never took off the spirit/magic stone necklace. She wore it even when she slept and bathed.
I get the attack was not well thought out by Aldor and his dad, but you'd think trying to force a scandal with someone whose the emperor's aide would cause you to pause. I mean even if it had overcome astronomical odds and worked you think she'd use her smarts to help you after ruining her career like that? This is ignoring that she's the emperor's close aide and likely would hear out her side and more than likely believe her. Maybe full chapter gives better context, but seems pretty stupid to think up a plan that has a huge chance to piss off your sovereign and very little chance of actually having an outcome in your favor.
Yeah he just thought that she would be so disgraced that the emperor wouldn't want her anymore and then marrying into his family was a great thing. You know those men always feel like what they offer is the best privilege for a woman so she'd automatically love working for them. I roll my eyes at him. I was going to start giving updates weekly so you guys can all suffer with me but this bit had to be told: Spoiler: Returning to the capital When they return, all the diplomats are called into the meeting chamber to report to the emperor (although he already knows what happened thanks to Hilltine.) Immediately Marquis Veldir starts reporting about how the diplomatic talks went and Kalian interrupts him asking him if he's the emperor's agent or not. Then everyone feels the burn and Leila is still silent until the other diplomats tell her to talk and she gives the report. Afterwards Kalian asks her to stay behind because he wants to talk to her. She sees Baron Ver and greets him. He says she can just call him Baron now since she's also a Baron. He greets her as Baron Aster. (She picked out Aster from a list of names Kalian gave her once which means star). They make some small talk then he leaves to do more work. She's glad he doesn't look as tired as she expected with him having to do her work as well. When they meet afterwards, Kalian tells her that he's still looking for a new mansion for her but meanwhile she will stay at the imperial palace. She says but she's not part of the imperial family so she can't and asks what's wrong with her current home. He says her home is too small especially now that she's a baron. Having such a small home will make him lose face as an emperor. Which she says makes sense. He then says he needs her to be there so they can truly get down to business on the new childcare institutions. She says but she can't stay there alone. So finally Kalian says but you won't be alone because Baron Ver will also be staying at the palace (Ver sneezes from this). She says ok. After the meeting Kalian goes and finds Ver to tell him he's going to be staying at the palace since it was the only way to convince Leila to stay. Ver adamantly refuses but Kalian says he has no opinion. It's his sin for being his aide. He says he'll let Ver go when the cloud settles with Duke Williot (Philine). Ver asks if he told Leila about it yet and Kalian said he hadn't. Leila gets to her room in the palace and unpacks her things in her luggage which is just uniforms. She thinks they're a bit too drab and she has some better clothes at home, so she thinks she'll go home and grab some clothes and underwear and come back. So she goes out and decides not to take a carriage but walk home. She picks up her salary from the accounting office and says it's more than she expected. The accountant says no that's normal and that Baron Ver actually gets more because Kalian told them to take care of Ver since he's always working nights and overtime. She then goes to the stationary store to pick up some stationary to write letters to Misa and the other servants in the Duchy. She thinks she needs to find a way to sneak the letters in because if Philine finds them he'll just tear them up. She gets home and it's been awhile because she's been gone for 2 weeks and her maid was also allowed to go home during that time. So she starts to clean up a bit when she hears a loud banging on the door. She goes to the window and takes a look but doesn't see anyone so she goes back to cleaning. Then she hears a loud knocking on the window. She looks and sees that damn Philine with super angry eyes. He knocked so hard it cracked the window. He says to open the door. She refuses. He knocks on the window some more and there are more cracks. He says open the door or I'll break the window and open the door myself. Leila then opens the door. He comes in and sits on the sofa. She leaves the door open so she can just run out if she needs to. Philine tells her to sit down he won't bite. She then sits near the door. Philine then proceeds to ask her why she did it. She asks did what? He said Parsley (Sicily) had the baby. Leila was thinking to herself.. then should I congratulate you? He says and then they had its funeral. So she's thinking... then give you my condolences? He asks why she killed his child by giving Parsley abortion meds. If she hated him that much to kill his child or hated Parsley. She hated Parsley but never hated the unborn child. She started thinking of the abortion pill that Countess Thebesa gave her. She thought she "disposed" of them. She said she never gave them to her. He said well she didn't but Misa did. She asked why would Misa do it? He says Misa did it for her (their theory is that Misa thought the child was in the way of Philine and Leila so she got rid of the child). Then Leila starts to think that maybe Misa really did do it for her. So she thinks that Philine is going to take her to the guards to be arrested but Philine says. I'm not going to take you to the guards. I'm going to have you pay for it yourself. He tells her she'll be having his baby instead. So in Philine's mind he was thinking about how much he hated Leila. He immediately ran to her residence but then was told she wasn't home and was on a diplomatic mission. So he kept staying and coming back to see if she was back. 2 weeks passed and he thought he wasn't as angry as before but he was still hurt because his dream in life since he was young was to have a child and a cozy family. He said unfortunately that child with Parsley was ruined so he must make Leila feel the same hurt he felt. He thought of taking what she valued the most. He thought that Kalian must be what means to most to her right now and so to get in-between them he'll make her his wife. Then Kalian can't touch her and then she'll be the perfect duchess. Then he thinks "although Parsley went a little wrong with having his child first, Philine continued to dream of Leila giving birth and forming a cozy family". He said he was frustrated at Leila's betrayal and sad but it was all in the past and this was best for everyone. Meanwhile Ver had reminded Kalian that Leila's birthday was coming up. So he was thinking of throwing her a party. Then Kalian was asking one of his guards(?), Rahel, what is a good present to give a woman? Then Rahel was thinking there's only 2 women Kalian could be talking about. Duchess of Cloud or Leila. Duchess of Cloud is the woman that Kalian always has the first dance with and is apparently his half-sister (we don't need to worry about her guys) and her anniversary isn't for a while so it must be Leila plus her birthday is coming up soon. He said usually you give young ladies dresses and jewels. Kalian thought said he wanted it to a memorable gift so he ordered them to bring in the jewelry tomorrow. Then he was asking people get to ready for a meal (dinner? lunch?) for him, Ver and Leila. Then he was going to call Leila but the maid that went came back and said she's not in her room and she might have left. So he asks her to check with the guards at the gates and the she came back saying Leila left the palace. Kalian then immediately called Hilltine and told him to go to her residence and bring her back. He had a terrible feeling... F@cking Philine man just go away with your delusions.
Kalian really need to inform Leila things that involving her especially if it's regarding her safety, Leila always the last one to know just like those 'fake aides' rumor. I know he has good intention, not make her worry and such, they said truth hurts but secret kills, man who protected someone from the shadow is cool, but it's even cooler if you works and fight together, woman ain't that weak you know.
