Discussion How to tell someone to shut up without telling them to shut up?

If you are up for it, shift the topic to something they dont like/is boring to them.
Then just keep going with it.

You said kid so ideas: their hw, something they just can't follow (horse anatomy, physics, dnd rules, the oxford comma), etc

OR

"That's cool, why don't you tell [pick anyone else] that"

OR

ask them what they are doing later, then say "oh that sounds cool, you should do that". If they don't have a good answer, say "I'm going to [pick something], actually I should get started. I'll talk to you later."

 

If it's a little kid: the silence game.
Whoever is quiet longer gets money or a treat. Whoever break the silence loses and gets nothing.

 

Funny enough, I've tried this. He never lasted 5 mins.

 

Excuse yourself saying you have something to do? Depends on your relationship with the other person

 

Sounds like this kid trusts and likes you (platonically, of course). Maybe they’re lonely? Do they have friends? I dunno what to suggest.

I would probably listen to their latest idea. While silently daydreaming. When their done or at a good stopping point. I would humor them by patting their head. Than say. That’s interesting, but I have things to do. Talk to you later. Than walk away. Than do what I want do. Most times I’m on my tablet reading. If they try to interrupt. In just say I’m at a good part and just keep reading. Than if they try again. I’d say the same thing. At least that’s what I would do

 

And it is at this time you acknowledge the fact that beating kids is still a viable thing.

Unless his parents are bigger than you, then weigh the worth of the kid shutting up and you getting a black eye or you getting your psyche slowly chipped away.

Just ignore them and you can act like you're really annoyed or not interested in what they're talking about you can also use your phone and pretend not to listen at all

 

Well, it only works to strangers though, i pretend that i don't speak their language XD

 

Have you tried giving them a sucker or taffy

 

If they're right in front of you in-person, make an excuse that sounds urgent and unquestionable so that you can get out of the situation such as "oh I have to get to (Place A) in 15 minutes so I got to go" sort of excuse.

If it's online, just ignore them. It's much easier online I suppose haha.

 

If it's my annoying cousin, without the adults, I straight up tell them to shut up ! With a slightly authoritative tone~
Or just give them a stern look my mom gives me when there are guests~~

-8 kids are more handful, I'd just lift them and bring them to their mama... If mama is busy, I go to a corner and read novels~ Just don't play games or watch anything, worst they might snatch your phone like undisciplined brats~ orz

 

I didn't want to tell an aunt of mine to shut up so I tried another method. Basically rapid firing the shushing noise.

 

Dont be a coward. Just tell em to shut up.

Little micro aggressions are lame as fuck. just tell dude that the conversation youre having is distracting you from doing something.

 

Accept your fate. Kiddo needs socializing and only you're around and maybe closer to their age. You can try sending them to play games or give them a task to do. Or say you have to do an assignment and go be busy on your phone/PC. Ask where their friends are and suggest they talk on the phone or something. But really, one day you'll both be older and drifting apart in your own life and days like these will be gone forever.
