I suppose you are right. In this novel it is the with the lower class (ML) chasing the one of higher class so it somewhat balances but in " I became a maid in TL novel" it was the more powerful pursuing the weaker side (who was just trying to lay low). Even though, he was not even as hateful as half of the MLs we read, I still found him annoying like that. Just annoying like trying to get rid of a persistent mosquito that snuck into your bedroom. :blobdizzy:

I have read a Japanese manga, the hero is 7 years younger than the heroine, but they are all adventures and children's romance. My aunt is 5 years older than her husband. When they got married, my aunt was 29 and her husband was 25. The problem is that she is 12 and not the age difference.

After Chapter 16 from the manhwa

    - Medena won the russian roulet bet.
    - Snorri blamed Faren on using magic to make Medena win but Faren denied the accusation and said that
he was only following the Medina's instructions of 'making sure that no magic has any effect on this bet.'
    - Snorri is actually a sorceres that was trying to manipulate the gun in order to win. And Faren created a nullifying environment to stop any magic on the gun
    - Snori started to kiss Medina's toe, but Medina stopped her. They then agreed that Snorri will work for her and the Luces company will then be used for something else, and Faren will manage it.
    - Back in the mansion, Faren was sad because it will limit his time with Medina. So Medina compromised that for now Faren will be her aid instead.
    - That night, Faren went back to Snorri to threaten her that if she betrays Medina or if she interferes with the new era that Medina will create, he will chase her to the ends of hell and punish her.
    - Snorri is now interested with Medina and thinks that Medina must have been raising a tiger cub. And the day she gets bitten by a grown tiger on the back is worth seeing.

    Book 1 - Chapter 3 (Part 1)

1yr 1/2 time skip (total of 2 yrs since Faren joined the Rodenherg family)
    - Faren will now be turning 15 and is getting a bit taller. Medena joked that her child is already this big. Faren replied with "I am not the son of Medena. Now stop talking and go wash up."
    - Faren is now an aid to Medena and taking the lead of the Luces company.
    - While Medena having breakfast with her mother, her mom decided that she must have her debut now because she's already 20. Medena agreed but wasn't that much thrilled.
    - Medena continued to monitor Susan thru Jack of the Striped Crow mercenaries. So far, Susan is currently docile and has been immersed in playing Count Tacio in her palm.

    - At Count Talcio's mansion,
    - Susan prepared a tea table, and waited for Count Talcio to join her. While waiting, she talked with the maid and learned that Medena will now be having her debut.
    - When Count Talcio joined her, she mentioned about the Medena's debut and her concern for Faren. Talcio got angery and said, "Susan! No matter how nice you are, you shouldn't trust
others so blindly...Because everyone is ignoring the reality of that fox bitch and praising them like an idot... I think I feel better if I spray ash on her stage."
    - At the end of their tea, after Count Talcio left, Susan smiled maliciously.

    - Faren and Snorri were having issues in relocating the upper headquarters of the Luces company. They bought a reasonably priced abandoned building in a commercial district that wasn't far from Count Rodenherg's mansion. However, there are people, descendants of Laugel tribe, who suddenly occupied
the said buidling illegaly. Faren and Snorri both think that the Laugel tribe must have some reason to do this. And if the Luces give up the building and buy a new one, they think that the Laugel will still do the same for the new building.
    - So Faren and Snorri decided to meet the Laugel tribe and negotiate.

    - Medena was busy selecting the material for her debut dress. Faren asked her if she has decided on her partner
    - Medena answered that it's her mom who chooses the right party or the partner to escort her.
    - Faren said that if he could be Medena's parner, how good it would be.
    - Medena thought that it would be difficult because of Faren's identity.
(MTL: If Medena has not sponsored Faren as in the original story, she would have met the end of being executed by Susan. No matter how talented a person is, a person's worth is determined by the label attched to them from birth. 'But in a new country Farren will become emperor. The socual system will be overthrown.' Medena couldn't say thos words, but instead stroked Faren's hands in encouragement.)
    - At that moment Countess Luciola (Medena's mother) walked in the room and requested to talk to Faren privately.

    - At the terrace, Faren asked Countes Luciola if she had anything to ask. The countess mentioned that Medena is now slowly reaching the age to think about marriage, and that Faren will also be an adult in a few years. The countess expressed her concern by telling a story to Faren about a young viscount heir who helped a commoner girl from her abusive parents and decided to sponsor her. Both were similar of age and tender feelings developed. But because of the status wall, the two cannot be together. The young man (named Ruth) arrogantly offered the girl to be his mistress, but the girl decided to leave him, and they never met again.
    - Luciola told Faren that she hoped this little story will be a good lesson to Faren.
    - And Faren answered back ( I gotta MTL this part: Faren avoids her gaze and looked straight ahead.
"I understand what you are concerned about, Count. I swear I will not have an ending that will hurt your daughter."
"... yes." Luciola softened her expression a little more than before. "This is moderately personal for Medena. Please tell her that I have questioned about the top."
    "yes"
She lifted her hand from the railing and turned around. It looked like she was going to leave the terrace first.
Luciola whispered softly as she grabbed the door leading to the corridor. " ... I don't mean to throw away your feelings right now, Faren. Please don't be too offended."
As soon as the door closed, Faren stared at the side where Luciola had disappeared for a moment, then headed towards the garden.
'She changed the the gender under the pseudonym 'Ruth' but it was self-evident that the story was from Luciola's experience'
He also knew that Luciola was worried about him in good faith, to the point of deliberately turning around and giving advice based on experiences.
"By the way, even the Count, who isn't often at home, notices my feelings right away. Why is your daughter so dense."
    )
    - When Faren returned back to Medina, she asked her what was discussed, and Faren just told her that the Count was just concerned about the top, that's all.

    - Snorri and Faren arrived at the old building to negotiate. There they met the man named Blint. Before they begin their negotiation, Blint said that he was trying to have a negotiation with the owner, and that he knows that Faren is actually playing as the top's owner but not the actual owner.
    - Faren got angry when this put Medena's name on the line and decided to hurt Blint, but Blint said to Faren if he's okay to be hated by getting blood on his hand without his master's approval.
    - So Snori and Faren decided to tell Medena about Blint wanting to meet her instead.

Shucks, I never though doing a summary while translating and reading the book at the same time will be this hard. haha! Sorry any wrong grammar or spelling. Anyway, kudos to all those who share spoilers to any of the manhwas I read! I so appreciate all your spoilers

Also, I'm still reading Chapter 3, and will try to do another summary again later.

    Book 1 - Chapter 3 (Part 2)
    [continuation….]

    ***

"... I'm sorry that I haven't reported any of the problems with the purchase of the building."

Faren bowed his head deeply to Medena who was sitting at the office desk, and apologized.

"It's all right. I'll forgive that much mistake."

Medena accepted his apology without much reproach. Perhaps Farren didn't report it separately because he thought he could handle it on his own.

It wasn't that she missed the report in a bad mood, so she wasn't upset about it. Rather, there was information that bothered her from the story she just heard.

"The young mans name was...did you say Blint?"

    "Yes"

    "..."

A talented wizard named Blintra. A daring personality, risking even his own life as if gambling.

It was consistent with the information in the original that she knew, but the most important part was different.

"You mean he's a mixed race of Laugel..."

"Yes. The outward features were distinct"

In the original version, Blint had light wheat-colored hair and looked like an ordinary imperialist.

'Accidentally the same name...? Or is the original information wrong? But so far, there has never been a time when the external information was wrong.'

Medena pondered for a moment, but either way she intended to meet him. It was because even from the biased information from Faren said, it was possible to know that he has quite an interesting talent.

'If you have that much guts, it will be useful anywhere.'

Faren asked cautiously, looking at Medena, who had a fresh expression on her face despite the negative report.

"...Are you planning to meet him?"

"Yeah, I think he's worth seeing."

Faren's face, which had been dark the whole time as he apologized to Medena, turned into a completely different atmosphere from before.

"...Ah. Come to think of it, if he attacked Faren, maybe he hit you first, didn't he? Are you hurt anywhere?"

I was worried because I got reports of some physical altercation in the process of talking to Blint.

"I am fine. He never used violence against me in the first place."

"oh, it that so....? Then, Faren, did something so great happened that you got mad in the first place? Aren't you hiding something from me?"

    "..."

"Otherwise, there's no way a gentle person like you would lose his hand first. Huh? Tell me honestly."

"I'm sorry, I made a mistake, so don't worry about it"

"...Is everything all right? You can't use it if you get bullied somewhere"

    "Yes"

    "Okay. That's nice"

Medena closed her eyes and smiled while stroking Faren's hair.

He leaned down and gently received Medena's hand.

While Faren was reporting, Snorri who was watching from behind, coughed while holding back laughter.

"Former Viscount Luces? Did you catch a cold? It's mid summer..."

"No, not at all. Keep going. I think about this every time I see you, but it's very nice to see you two have a deep friendship."

Faren turned and glared at Snorri, but she didn't budge and let out a cough mixed with laughter.

"Because Faren is so kind and sincere, Are you doing well at the top?"

"Of course, no need to worry. He's playing the role of a top-tier master so close to perfection."

As far as work is concerned, Snorri's evaluation of Faren was sincere.

Medena, who heard Faren's praise, made a proud face as if it was her own work.

"Fufu, I'm glad. Anyway, let's make an appointment with Blintra then."

"Hmm, are you really okay? He did not name the Count Rodenherg or you directly. It may have been that he did not know the exact information."

"Maybe, but he said I was lucky enough to be called 'Master Lady'. I think he probably knows who I am."

    Snorri glanced at Faren's side.

As expected, the atmosphere was atrocious, but in front of Medena, there was a sign of self-respect.

"Anyway, what he wanted was to meet me face to face, so it would mean that he needed the power of the Count, whether it be money or anything."

    "That's true."

"Do we really need to hide the cards and spin them around? Let's talk openly, and if there's no room for compromise, then that's all I need to think about then."

Snorri chuckled as if she liked Medena's cool answer.

"Well, such determination is the virtue of our Lord. Anyway, I got it. Let me arrange the date and place to meet him."

    "Please"

"Then, I will take my leave. I apologize for the trouble I've caused this time. From now on, we will deal with it in a our way so as not to trouble the Count."

"It was an unexpected situation. Thank you for always being nice."

"I'm flattered. Excuse me first. I'll leave the rest of the discussion with you, acting head of the state."

Snorri said goodbye and quickly left the office.

It was supposed to be a quick escape before being entangled by Faren, who was on the verge of an explosion, but Medena could not understand the intention.

"I don't think anything will happen, but stay with me when I meet that young man named Blint, Faren."

    "Yes"

He replied with an unnatural smile.

"Are you not happy that I agreed to meet him?"

    "...Can I answer you honestly?"

    "uhn"

    "I don't like it."

"Did something happened? I have no intention of bringing him in if he touched a child like you."

For some reason, after hearing Medena's words. Faren let out a long sigh.

    "....?"

"As expected, it seems like you want to hire talented people, just like Director Snorri."

    "Ah...."

Come to think of it, the reason for meeting Blint was to ask for the Laugel people to leave the building. However, in Medena's head, Blint had already been transformed into a candidate for recruitment.

Faren had seen right through her mind.

"It was the same when she brought in the director, but I don't know what Medena likes.... Why do you want to collect geeks only?"

"I just thought they want to do their jobs well if they have the guts to do it."

    "...."

"...Do you hate it that much?"

"No, it's up to Medena to judge. Never mind what I say."

    "Uhmmm"

Medena patted hid head and face soothingly.

But Faren didn't tell her anything any more.

'If that Blint was the same person as the original, it would be better to be close to Faren. Was the first impression very bad....?'

It was an unsolvable riddle for Medena, who could not understand that Faren's vigilance was a kind of territorial dispute.

    ***

    "Haha, done!"

As soon as Kavan checked all the mails addressed to him, he laughed loudly and hit the desk. Each of the mails that came in were from several noble families.

Then, a knock was heard in his study.

    "Excuse me, Count. It's Susan."

"Oh, just in time. Come on in."

Susan pulled in a teapot and teacup wagons in graceful motion.

"No you should've asked your subordinates to do it. Why do you have to suffer from it?"

"It's because I want to treat the count myself."

"Really, I can't stand your kindness." Kavan chuckled and picked up the tea.

"I'm glad I came, do you have anything to say to me?"

"Oh, yeah. Didn't I decide to throw a party to celebrate this business event?"

"Yes, it will be a great party. I'm sorry I can't attend yet."

"Don't worry, you'll have enough attendance when you become an adult. Anyway, that's not the problem."

He wet his dry lips with this tongue and chuckled.

"Actually, the reason I decided to hold this party was for something else."

    "Something else...?"

"The other day, Didn't you say that Rodenherg's fox bitch is going to make her debut?"

    "....Ah. Yes, I did."

"I invited both young women and young men, who are debuting around the same time as this year, to my party. Even low-ranking families will be treated with dignity without exception."

    "...."

"I have just received their replies now. Everyone wants to attend my party." Kavan laughed triumphantly.

It was stipulated by law that the debutant will held their debut at a party hosted by 'other' aristocrats. It was because there was a time in history when the aristocracy competed to show off their son's and daughter's debut and it became more wasteful.

So the Empire's debutant debut was firmly established in the form of asking for permission and attending a party hosted by another family. However, big parties that could be used as the stage for the debutant were not held very often. For that reason, several men and women were supposed to debut at once at one party.

Instead of hosting a large-scale party that could be the stage for the Medena's debut, Kavan planned to openly exclude her.

The Talcio family had been at odds with the Rodenherg family over their engagement in the past, so it wouldn't be a surprise if they don't send an invitation.

"Now that bitch debuts alone at a small party that doesn't get much attention, she will either be embarrassed or have no choice but to delay her debut even longer."

However, rumors were all over that Medena was preparing for her debut. Delaying the debut would be a disgrace. Either way, it was the result that put a shame on Medena. Just imagining her face contorted in a stoic way, Kavan gets delighted.

"That....That's why I feel sorry for Count Rothenherg. It's a once-in-a-lifetime debut group. Please be kind...."

As if she has been humiliated, Susan shook her shoulders and begged Kavan in a thin voice.

"Susan, I know you have a good heart, but this is already over. Heh, it's not as outrageous as making that bitch into a social laughing stock."

    "I'm sorry for being rude..."

"No. Anyway, don't worry about her. Wouldn't the fox's nose be crushed at this level of shame?"

    "...."

Kavan chuckled as he spit out swear words about Medena.

Susan covered her mouth and lowered her eyes as if she were worried about Medena. However, the corners of her lips, which were covered by her hands, were drawing arcs as she smiled."

    Book 1 - Chapter 3 (Part 3)
    [continuation….]

    ***

Medena returned to her bedroom and opened the window wide.

On a summer evening, a cool breeze blew into the room. Not long after, the guest she had been waiting for stepped on the window sill and entered the bedroom.

    “Hey, young Count. Good evening.”

    “It’s been a while.”

A young man with turquoise hair wearing an eyepatch waved his hand flutteringly.

“By the way, are you going to a party or something? That dress you’re wearing doesn’t match the bedroom?”

As Jack said, Medena was wearing a very fancy dress and jeweled accessories. She sighed and shook her head.

“It’s because the debut dress making isn’t finished yet. Instead, I am wearing similar dress and trying on matching accessories. It’s just a time for break.”

    “Haha. What a mess.”

    “Well, that’s right.”

“But there seems to have been more uproar regarding the debutant, Rodenherg’s little lady.”

    “….?”

Calling him today wasn’t about the debutants. The purpose of this was to check on the things related to Blint and to say hello to each other after a long time as a long-term business partner.

“Ah. It’s a hot piece of information that came in today. I want to deliver it to you while I’m on my way to see my employer anyway."

    “…Say it.”

“Well, you were looking for a party to attend as a debutant, right?”

    “That’s correct.”

“The Count Kalvan Talcio is throwing a party in a hurry this time as a pretext of business.”

    “I know, but I won’t be there.”

When Medena coldly cut it off, Jack clicked his tongue.

“Well, listen to me till the end. As soon as he decided to throw a party, he send invitations to each noble family.”

“It’s not that big of a deal.”

“What if it’s sent to all families that had children who are about to debut?”

    “….”

    “Except for the Rodenherg family.”

Medena crossed her arms expressionlessly. It was immediately clear why Kavan Talcio did that.

    “Aren’t you very upset?”

“No, I’m quite surprised. He wants to spend a lot of money and do all sorts of useless things.”

    “Ah, that’s why you’re surprised?

What an unusual girl. Jack chuckled and leaned against the wall.

“To be honest, I don’t care about debuting.”

“You’re not like a little lady.”

“I don’t care about your prejudice. After all, as I began to sponsor Faren, I was fed up with the rumors behind him. It doesn’t even bother me if I have one or two more things to hide.”

“Well, that the country’s perception of wizards is obvious.”

Faren’s magical solution to the bridge case in Letish became a hot topic, but that was all. Still in the Empire, the wizards were nothing more than a lowly race with strange powers.

He knew that social circles praised Medena for her beauty, but behind the scenes they ridiculed her for being vulgar in sponsoring a wizard.

“But the fact that Kavan Talcio did this…..”

Medena narrowed her eyes and closed her chin.

‘If you want to be quiet, you show off your presence once in a while, Susan.’

Behind him, the figure of a beautiful silver-haired girl who had secretly manipulated things like this, fluttered.

“It’s not something I’m going to let go off quietly. I’ll give the same degree in return.”

“As expected, Rodenherg’s successor is merciless. You know what? Count Talcio ccalls you a fox bitch.”

“He is calling me by a more noble nickname than I thought.”

    “Hahahaha”

Medena ignored Jack’s exasperated laugh and pulled out a small box from under the bed. When she handed the box to Jack, he looked puzzled.

“Are you asking me to clean up the aftermath mess?”

“You said something that makes sense. Open it and look at the contents.”

Jack opened the lid, looked inside, and whistled.

“Is it an ancient coin? It’s all made of gold, right?”

“That’s right. Your organization’s hard work is not something I don’t know, so don’t eat alone and share it with your members.”

“I am deeply moved by the generosity of Count Rodenherg.”

As he thank him with exaggeration, Medena waved her arms and restrained him from quitting.

“You can do better in the future. By the way….. I want to ask you something.”

    “What is it?”

“I asked for an investigation separately from Susan. Blint and Portia.”

    “Uh huh”

“…. I recently had a conflict with the Laugels over the top of the Luces. I hear the name of the person who negotiated as a representative was Blint.”

    “Yes?”

    “Did you not know?”

“Well, the Laugels are exclusive, and I didn’t know their names.”

“I see. The Blint I’m looking for wasn’t of mixed race, so it’s very likely a coincidence….”

    “….”

“….Anyway, I see Keep up the good work.”

“I’ve received such a big gift today, so I don’t know if I can. Please continue to love us, our client.”

Jack said his usual exaggerated greeting and then slipped out the window like the wind.

Medena stared after him for a moment, then folded her arms.

    “….There’s something going on.”

‘It was strange that Jack’s reaction to missing the personal information of a man named Blint was too calm. I wouldn’t have let Jack go if I missed anything about his personality.’

It didn’t seem like he intended to betray her side, but she couldn’t erase the sense of incongruity.

‘This will be confirmed after meeting Blint in person.’

Medena closed the window and drew the curtains, counting what’s next in her head.

    ***

As soon as Jacq left the Count Rodenherg, he headed straight west. The destination was a commercial district not far from the Count’s house.

It was right there in the abandoned building that was supposed to be the top Luces headquarters building.

With agile movements, Jacq landed on the second floor of an abandoned building and tapped on the window with a steady rhythm.

Blint, who found him, chewed the dried fish and opened the window without sincerity.

“What, Blint? Are you eating snacks without alcohol?”

“It’s expensive. Give me money and tell me to drink.”

Blint flopped down on an old desk.

When Jack saw him, he threw some of the gold coins he had brought with him.

    “Is this…?”

    “Bonus from the client.”

“Ah, the owner of this building.”

“I told the members to hand it out, but technically, you are also allies.”

Jack strode toward Blint and looked at him.

“You know, at first I hid your existence from the Count because I was afraid the sun would go down.”

    “Uh”

“….. you know it’s not anymore, right? I think the Count wants to have you on her side, just like the former Viscount Luces.”

    “Well, maybe it is?”

“Then, wouldn’t it have been better not to provoke in this way and just show up?”

“I don’t think hyung will be very docile to the Count, considering his advice.”

“Where else can you find a courteous and sincere customer like me?”

As Jack stretched his chest out, Blint threw the leftover dried fish at him.

“But you’d better be careful because if you act arrogant until you meet the Count, you’ll really lose your neck.”

“Well, the crazy dog raised in that house won’t stand still. I’m ready.”

Jack laughed out loud after hearing that. It was because the black-haired kid, the most wary object, came to mind when he visited Count Rodenherg’s residence.

“That’s all I’m covering for. Next time, let’s meet with our neck are fully attached.”

    “Yes, thank you, brother.”

Jack disappeared through the window again.

Blint, who was staring at the full moonlit sky, tossed the gold coin in the air and caught it. The gold coin in the pam was face up again.

    Book 1 - Chapter 3 (Part 4)
    ***

The appointment date, scheduled by Snorri’s, has arrived.

They will have a lunch together and meet at a private room in a restaurant where the Rodenherg family used to conduct their business in secret.

“The guest you mentioned has arrived.”

    “I see. Lead the way.”

    “I’ll guide you right away.”

Medena sat at the top of the table, Faren and Snorri sat on either side.

Snorri looked at Faren with an excited face. He was pretending to be calm, but the perfectionist little boss was terribly horned (**not sure about this ‘horned’ term)

The condition was obvious to Snorri, who became accustomed to Faren after working together for quite a while.

Whether she knew how she felt, Medena looked as if she was looking forward to meeting Blint.

Eventually, Blint arrived at the main building and guided by the butler.

‘Oh, what a handsome young man.’

Medena saw him and admired him purely.

His bold appearance was very wild and attractive. He’s dressed neatly, to set an example on how to meet the Count’s successor.

“Nice to meet you, Count Rodenherg. My name is Blint.”

“It’s Medena Rodenherg. Thank you for coming all the way.”

“You’re welcome. To a person who is occupying your private property, you are very kind. I don’t even know what to do.”

    Hi speech is very eloquent.

‘…..As expected, the impression overlapped with the original Blint.’

It was not a common skill to create an atmosphere that prevents the opponent from attacking first by mentioning his flaws in a subtle way.

“Let’s sit down. You’ve met the other two, right?”

“Yes. I owe them a lot the other day.”

“Alright. Let’s have our meal first.”

“I’m sorry if I’m rude, I don’t know the etiquette.”

“Fork and knives will be new for each course, and you can cut the food into bite-sized pieces, so it’s not a problem.”

    “I’ll keep that in mind”

The hors d’oeuvres were carried in a tense atmosphere.

Faren never spoke, and Snorri and Medena occasionally accepted Blint’s jokes.

It was such an awkward time that the person watching from the other side might suffocate.

After finishing the meal, dessert and tea were served.

Medena, who though it was about time, got to the main point.

“Well, then. Can I ask you a question first?”

    “Of course”

“I could have forced you out of the building, but I didn’t…..do you know why?”

Blind smiled brightly at her question.

“Because you don’t want to show the connection between the top of Luces and the Rodenherg family to the outside, right? There’s no way that the top, ostensibly run by the fallen aristocrats, can mobilize military force to evict the ‘barbarians.”

    “….”

“Well, with just one of the Countess’s faithful wizard over there, it would be possible to get rid of us without a word.”

“I have no intention of making Faren do that.”

    “You seem to care.”

    “Don’t play with words.”

Medena moistened her mouth with sparkling water and spoke clearly.

“It’s not wrong to infer that I don’t want to expose the connection to the outside world, but the biggest reason is because I’m interested in you.”

Snorri glanced at Faren. He wasn’t looking at Blint on purpose, but the fork that Faren was holding was twisted in a strange direction.

“Well, I don’t know what to do with myself. What kind of interest did you feel?”

“I think you already know the information. The top of Luces is lacking manpower, and I like people who are likely to do a good job.”

    “Hmmm.”

Blint leaned against the back of the chair as if steaming, and folded his arms. His gaze alrenated between Medena and Faren.

When Faren’s eyes met momentarily, a terrible pressure flowed in. He seemed to be refraining himself from activating his magic in front of Medena, but it seemed that his aura alone could kill people.

Medena, not noticing Faren’s aura, continued to speak softly.

“I admire your guts, but I also like the intelligence and neatness of the Laugel people.”

    “It’s an honor.”

“So I’d like to make a suggestion. Don’t you and everyone on your side want to work at the top of our Luces?”

Without realizing it, Snorri looked at Medena in adminration.

It was a good way to solve the manpower shortage at the top of Luces all at once.

It seems that she came here directly to recruit not only Blint, ut also the Laugel people who were with him through this negotiation.

“Oh…I didn’t know you would say something like that, did you?”

    “Is that so?”

“Yeah. That’s right, we’re ‘barbarians’, right?”

Medena was not ignorant of how the group was treated. The Untouchables that all the people of the Empire reject and ostracized. However, it was not a big deal for Medena, who sponsored a similarly despised wizard.

“Does your birth have anything to do with your ability? I think the fact that you created this position in an unfavorable situation has proven your competence enough.”

“I think that’s a big compliment. Well, it’s a deal, so we’ll appreciate it if you’ll price us high.”

“….So, will you accept my offer?”

It would not have been a loss-making proposal on the part of the Laugel tribe. For those with unstable residence, a stable employment location would be a great advantage.

Blint stroked his chin for a moment, then slowly opened his mouth,

“What’s the scope of the Countess’s charity work?”

    “What?”

“I understand what you mean by taking the ‘barbarians’ out of this city. It is a very compassionate response to a life that is enough to kill if they are wrong.”

    “….”

The content was a compliment, nit there was a strange chilling vibe.

“But what about the ‘barbarians’ who live in other provinces? Wouldn’t it be the same to seize the building or land owned by the Countess and attract attention? Then will you reap them as well?”

    Medena looked straight at Blint.

The ultimate purpose of his intentional use of the method of occupying the private property of Medena.

‘….This guy, he wants to test me.’

Including that point, I am assured that the young man in front of me was the Blint of the original work.

“I will reap it all. The top of Luces is the top that will be raised on a nationwide scale in the future. Rather, it would be appreciated if we could absorb the manpower from all over the place.”

    “You are a great philanthropist”

“It’s not like that. It’s based on the investment principles of the Rodenherg family.”

    “Investment principles….?”

    Medena smiled gracefully.

“Don’t hesitate to invest on something that creates value in the future.”

“Are you talking about the barbarians who are treated like trash in the Empire?”

“Correct. Unprotected by no one, your bond is strong. To that extent, I know that grace is not forgotten.”

    “Hmmm”

“The Laugel tribes all over the country are also connected with the Bodhisattva. I think the advantages of local commercial connections that identify each region are also very great.”

Not only that, but the Laugel people were mixed with the blood of many wizards. It was because they often relied on each other from those who were treated poorly.

Considering the upcoming magical era, it would have been a great help to have at least one more wizard as an ally.

“I thought it would be very valuable to make them mine.”

    “….as a good dog?”

“Not like that. I have no intention of telling you to serve me or obey me. It is enough just to work together for the benefit of each other.”

Snorri, who was listening to the story, was smiling somewhere with his chin in his back.

Faren was still wary of Blint, but his gaze on Medena was warm.

“In the first place, didn’t you do such a reckless thing for me as well?”

“Haha. Yes, that’s right. An eccentric nobleman who sponsors wizards and uses them as a hand and foot. I wanted to see your progress and gambled a little bit.”

“….Are you satisfied with the outcome of your gambling?”

    “For now.”

Blint fiddled with the little thing in his pocket and set it down behind the glass.

“I’ll tell my comrades as soon as I get back. In fact, I understand that the Countess will need to be prepared one way or another, so I understand the delay in accepting it.”

“Yes. But I’d appreciate it if you’d come straight to the top of Luces first.”

    “That’s a little difficult.”

    “How come?”

He smiled slightly and replied softly.

“From the beginning, I was only going to play the role of an intermediary. This is going well, so I’m going to leave the capital when it’s over.”

“That… it’s difficult. I was most attracted to having you in tis deal.”

    “Hmmm”

“If there is no real reason to leave this place, why not reconsider? If it’s a paycheck, I can match it to you.”

Blint looked around the table with his arms crossed, then put a playful smile on his lips.

“…. Then, let me give you one condition.”

    “What’s the condition?”

“I hope you can give me a satisfactory answer to my question.”

    Medena laughed involuntarily.

“It’s like an old mythical messenger.”

    “Hahaha, is that so?”

    “So, what’s the question?”

Blint slowly opened his mouth, enjoying the gaze focused on him.

“If I ask you to support me instead of the dark-haired kid over there. Will you grant me that request?”

The question that came out of his mouth was totally unexpected. But his words quickly freezes the atmosphere inside the room.

In the suffocating silence, only Blint was smiling.

At the same time, a sharp noise broke the silence in the room before anyone could opened their mouth.

“Ah, I’m sorry. My hand slipped.”

Snorri, who made the noise, briefly apologized.

A teacup fell to the floor and shattered.

Snorri rang the bell and called for the attendant. Then she glanced at Faren.

If she hadn’t stirred the mood by breaking the teacup, she would have been on the verge of smashing the glass that Faren was holding.

Faren, too, was also breathing down and putting down his glass as if he had noticed Snorri’s intentions.

An awkward period of silenced passed until the restaurant staff cleaned up the broken glass and left.

Medena opened her mouth expressionlessly at Blint.

“….Is that the condition for you to come work for me?”

“You are free to interpret it either way.”

“then let me answer you right away.”

    “No.”

Blint jumped up from his seat

“Let’s hear the answer after the Countess’s debut is over. Either way, isn’t it polite to think about it for a long time and then return it?”

“I think you’re the one who isn’t polite.”

“I guess because I’m a barbarian who didn’t learn. But the nobles cannot do that.”

    “…. What sophistry.”

“Well then, I’ll see you later. Thank you for the delicious food.”

He stormed out of his seat without any hesitation.

The sound of the door closing was heard, and there was a cold silence in the room once again.

Snori spoke to Medena in a relaxed voice.

“I’m not saying this, but you’re always only interested in people with strange personalities.”

“Oh no, it’s not. There are straight kids like Faren.”

    “Hmmm”

Snorri swallowed the words, ‘That’s what I was saying, including the assistant manager,’ and answered with a snort.

“Do I look that easy? Enough to make me want to provoke you?”

Snorri burst out laughing, as Medena put her hands to her cheeks, and muttered involuntarily.

“I’m only talking about my case. I provoked you because I didn’t want you to be complacent. The master who was swayed by the provocation of such a humble old man was discouraged.”

    “Hmmm….”

Either way, Blind said he wanted Medena’s answer. Did he really want to upset Medena and avoid working for her? Or is it the purpose of shaking Meden’s emotions and seeing the reaction like Snorri?

It is currently unknown what he wants to achieve with his question.

    “For now, let’s go home.”

    “Let’s do that”

Anyway, Medena’s answer was decided. But it will be after the debut to say it.

It was a loss of the one who was gripped by his question and grunted.

‘Come to think of it, Iit seems that Blint is left something on the table.’

Medena checked Blint’s seat before leaving the private room.

She, then, lifted the object that was placed behind the glass, and laughed inadvertently.

    “Is that…?”

    “It’s a gold coin…..it’s an ancient coin.”

As expected, he was also connected to the 'Striped Crow’. It was interesting to see the intention to shake people to this extent.

“Why did you leave your gold coin behind?”

“Well, is it in lieu of meals? I’ll have to give it back the next time I see you.”

Medena wrapped the gold coins in a handkerchief and put it in her handbag.

As a habit, she reached out her hand to Faren and was startled.

Faren’s face was devoid of expression. The energy around was as if it would explode quickly.

    “Faren, are you mad…?”

    “No”

His voice was calm, but everywhere she looked, his reaction was that of an angry person.

As she walked toward the carriage, Medena whispered soothingly.

“Just in case, I have no intention of accepting Blint’s crazy offer. I don’t think the purpose of the question is to really want my support.”

    “….”

Faren thought about something and asked briefly.

    “You knowm Countess”

    “Uh”

“….. rather, Countess, aren’t you angry?”

    “Me?”

    “Yes”

“Uhm….If I get angry it’s my loss. It was no big deal. I’m alright.”

Faren smiled softly as Medena replied.

It was a beautiful smile, but as soon as Snorri, who was following him, saw his face, she said, “Oh, my…..” and groaned.

Blint’ ulterior motive is unknown, but if the purpose was to stir a ripple between the two, it has a great success.

“If the Countess doesn’t care, I don’t care either.”

Faren replied that way and did not bring the topic up further.

    Book 1 - Chapter 3 (Part 5)

    ***

Even as they parted with Snorri and rode the carriage, Faren kept his usual demeanor and smiled at her. Madena tried to say something more, but he turned the subject around.

No matter how fine Faren looks, it was certain that he was offended. The problem was she couldn’t figure out exactly what the reason was.

'I don’t plan on giving up on Faren’s sponsorship, and I even told Faren my intentions clearly. So what the hell is his problem….?’

It may be because he just didn’t like Blint and so he’s sulking.

She tried thinking of different possibilities, but she couldn’t get the perfect answer.

‘I’ll properly talk to him when we’re alone later.’

Looking at Faren’s stubborn profile, Medena made her decision.

She attempted to converse with him but failed repeatedly. She tried to bring up the incident and Faren just gives her his perfect smile.

It seemed strange, she even asked Snorri, but she too answered dryly.

“Well….If the Countess is okay with it, then that’s fine. It’ll be annoying to meddle in….Oh, no. It’s not a matter for an old man to interfere.”

As anyone can guess, Faren openly revealed how hurt he was at Medena for not caring.

However, for Medena, she rather wanted Faren to complain.

‘Is this a problem when the child you raised is now an adolescent?’

It was difficult to deal with a boy of mysterious age who was not entirely a child but has not reached adulthood yet.

“Medena, I think we’re done talking to the Imperial Guards. Let’s go right in.”

    “Yes, Mother.”

Whatever concerns Faren has, Medena thought that the immediate issue would be resolved quickly. She followed Luciola out of the carriage.

The place where the two arrive at was the entrance of the Imperial Palace. The palace, built in the very center of the capital, was glowing red.

The enormous scale and the architectural style, that tells a deep history, can overwhelm viewers, but for Medena, she stared at the palace with a cold gaze.

‘The symbol of the rotten Alleo Empire.’

As a person who knew what the royal family had been doing to maintain their power, she could only snort.

‘The feeling of knowing how the future imperial family collapses doesn’t matter right now. I should still play the faithful role of a trader today.’

Medena organizes her thoughts as she started walking down through the corridors and followed the chieftain.

    ***

The Imperial palace has an inner and outer palace. Today, the Rodenherg’s mother and daughter were invited to the central garden situated in between the outer and inner palace. They were to a gazebo beside a well-manicured flower garden.

Just as they were sitting down, a lady appeared, who was the same age as Luciola, wearing sparkling jewels from head to toe.

It was hard to tell how much money was spent on the lady’s clothes and jewelries. Luciola and Medena, though their dresses can be said to be splendid, seemed modest compared to the lady.

“Marchioness of Lelshan. Nice to meet you.”

Luciola greeted her as Medena made a bow quitely.

“It’s been a while, Countess Rodenherg. Oh my, Medena has grown so much already.”

“This child is already an adult. There are still many shortcomings, but I hope you will be generous about it.”

“Don’t mention it. Haha, it’s nice to see you like this after a long time, Medena.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Madame.”

In the original case, it was impossible for a Marquis wife to set up a private seat inside the imperial court. But Savia Lelshan isn’t just a Marquis’ wife. She was the emperor’s mistress, the dominant force who controls the interior of the imperial family. She became the mistress in the eyes of the emperor due to her outstanding beauty and eloquence.

Savia glanced at Medena with a strange smile.

“by the way, Medena is already an adult and I haven’t heard of her debut yet.”

    Luciola smiled slightly.

The news that Medena was preparing for her debut has spread wide in social circles. And Savia, the center of the social world, could not have been unaware of it. Perhaps she wanted to hear with her own ears the gossip that medena has been bullied by Count Talcio’s preemption of the debut party.

“That’s right. I’d like to tell you a lot of things including that.”

“Oh my. What kind of power a girl in the back room like me has?”

Savia flapped her diamond and emerald studded fan, showing disrespectful humility.

“Fist of all, I will show you the jewel you requested first. Medena.”

    “Yes, Mother.”

Medena beckoned the servant to put the bag she had brought on the table. When she opened the small trunk-type bag, various ornaments wrapped in silk and stored preciously, shone.

    “Oh my goodness!”

Savia exclaimed as soon as she saw the inside of the bag.

“Oh, my God. The cutting is so delicate. The real thing is much nicer than what was shown on the pamphlet.”

“You have a good eye. It’s a masterpiece.”

“This citrine is so fresh. Alas! The material itself is not expensive, but it definitely sems to lead a new trend.”

“These ornaments will be happy to find a master who appreciated them like you.”

“Whoah, Lord Rodenherg hardness is true.”

“Then, I’ll hand over everything in this bag.”

“Yes. Thanks. I buy jewelries from other foreign merchants, but…..I think the top of Rodengerg is the best.”

    “I’m flattered.”

Luciola turned to Medena and added. “In fact, all these accessories are the project of Medena.”

    “Oh really?”

“It is. Medena is far more sensible and superior in this area than me. The ‘Canary’ series, which you liked before, is also her work.”

“How! The limited edition of the legend that sold out as soon as it came out was Medena’s work…..”

Savia’s attitude completely softened towards Medena.

“I am very much looking forward o the new jewelry that will be released. I will use it a lot, Medena.”

“Thank you for your generous words, Madam. Actually, I have something to tell you about that ‘new jewel’”

As Medena’s luck is in play, Savia’s is now seriously intrigued.

    “….Is it, Pink Beryl?”

“As expected, the Marquis is quick on the tip.”

“Yeah, because pink beryl is so rate, and there are very few accessories with pale pink jewels. I was looking forward to the new product.”

“Yes, as you can imagine, we’re going to use this pink beryl to announce a new line of accessories soon. Just like the previous Canary series.”

Medena saw the change in Savia’s eyes and was convinced that she had seized the victory.

“In relation to this series, I would like to try something new this time.”

    “What about this new attempt?”

“I would like to announce the new product at a party, and giving priority to those who attend the party the right to purchase the new product.”

Luciola, who heard the explanation beforehand, looked at Medena with a pleased face.

“I’m going to call this a ‘showcase party’”

“That showcase party…. Do you intend to host it at the Rodenherg?”

Savia was very greedy, but she was also a quick thinker. She must have guessed the reason why she had to bring up this story to himself in the first place.

“I would like the Marquis of Lelshan to host the ‘showcase’ party. You’ll be the best host of the party that’s going to get the most attention in society.”

“Oh my, I’m honored that you think of me that way.”

“I’m just stating the obvious. And if possible….”

Medena smiled confidently, foreseeing that her purpose to meet Savia today has been accomplished.

“I want you to allow me to make my debut alone at the party.”

    ***

[Collaboration of the top of Rodenherg and the town craftsmen! The Baby Rose series is born!]

The new product announced in the newspaper has caused quite a stir in the society. There were many predictions that the Rodenherg family, who acquired the pink beryl mine, would announce something new.

In addition to the anticipated new product, the “Showcase Party” has drawn more attention because it was an unprecedented presentation format. Not only that, bu the party’s host is none other than Savia Lelsan, the emperor’s mistress.

Everyone was frantic to get an invitation to this party, or to get a connection to the person who got the invitation and attend the party together.

There wasn’t even a mention of Count Talcio’s party, where he gathered all the young men and women who are about to have their debut.

    “This….. Damn fox bitch!”

Kavan threw the newspaper and spat out some swear words.

The butler of the Talcio family cautiously spoke to him.

    “Well, Count, these mails….”

    “What?!”

“It was sent by the families who previously accepted the invite, but I wonder if it could still be cancelled…”

“These bastards! Who do they think Kavan Talcio is!”

Kavan tore the mail on the silver tray and scattered them in the air.

“Reply clearly! Cancellation is absolutely unacceptable!”

“….Yes, I will write it right away and reply to each family.”

After the butler stepped out, Kavan threw the books that he could get his hands on and kicked some furniture until they break.

He spent a lot of money for this business purpose party. The amount of money used for the convenience of the family who are about to debut were also considerable. And some were spent on publicity.

But because of the Marquis of Lelsan’s party, his was completely buried and the effect he wanted could not be obtained.

All Kavan had left was resentment and huge damage as Medena stabbed him in the back.

“I will never forget this insult…. I’ll never forget it!”

The sound of his madness could be heard from a distance.

Susan, who was sitting alone in the living room drinking tea, bit her nails.

“….Stupid Count. Really useless. I can’t believe he got stabbed in the back for this.”

She mumbled nervously and tapped the table with her other hand.

“I need more power. Barely a count, there’s little I can do. But until I become an adult and debut in the social world, I can’t do whatever I want.”

After uttering a few more swear words against Kavan, Susan got up and wandered around.

    “….Ugh. Another headache.”

She grabbed her head and took a deep breath. She’s been having this intermittent headache since she was young. Every time she had it, some scenery flickered in her head then disappeared as if it was foggy.

    “It’s as if I’m forgetting something….”

But no matter how much I thought about it, it only gave me another headache, and I couldn’t tell the identity of the landscape beyond the fog.

Then, someone opened th door and spoke politely.

    “Miss, dinner….”

Susan poured hot tea on the maid who came near her.

    “Ahhhhhh!”

    “Don’t disturb me and leave.”

    “So, Sorry….I’m Sorry!”

The little maid went out crying.

Susan breathed out, wondering if her anger could not be relieved by the outburst.

“I’ll have to shut her up and kick her out. Oh, it’s boring….”

At first, the playground of a Countess, which seemed enjoyable at first, gradually felt lacking.

    In a wider place.

    From a higher place.

    She had to be worshipped.

This strong desire has been in Susan’s mind since she was young.

“I want to become an adult soon.”

She bit her lip, muttering sentences that sounded like a young girl’s pure hope.

My first thought exactly. It's surprising how no one pointed it out until page 4 of this spoiler thread... And here I thought I was overreacting. I'm somewhat relieved. :blobsweat_2:

LOL this was honestly disgusting how alot of people agreed(by the likes). There's no equality when it comes to straight up adults ending up children... And here I thought this site was normal.

I'm surprised there's so much controversy about the age gap. The ml stayed a child (12) for a handful of chapters, long enough to establish his adoption, tutoring and set up a few plot points, then he was quickly aged up to teenager(15). A teen being in love with an adult, if 19 is even considered an adult, is nothing special, especially if the adult doesn't encourage or pursue the relationship. This isn't a Usagi Drop scenario, the fl doesn't interact with the ml like a parent, more like master/subordinate. Ml even complains about how little time he gets to spend with fl, and he sets his boundaries very clearly "Don't treat me as a brother or a son." It's ridiculous to ban people from entering a relationship with another adult just because they interacted with that adult as a child.

Anyway, I'd really appreciate some spoilers on the first timeline. The fl doesn't really act like someone with future knowledge. Did she really just follow the script, minus abusing the ogfl? If so, she really was a fool.

So I wanted to talk about Faren (& Susan’s) coming of age/ societal debuts because it’s so satisfying but the book chapters are SO LONG and and I knew I'd lose my place, so I ended up doing the whole thing, but if you don’t want to read my rambling, the short version is below.

I can't promise this is completely accurate, it's been a minute since I read vol 1 or chap 5, so relying on memory (and MTL)

    • It's explained that a typical debut goes something like this: Someone other than the sponsor hosts, debutants are introduced, debutantes are granted a first dance, where they can ask anyone to be their partner and that person is basically expected to accept no matter what, and then after their first dance, they demonstrate their talents for the amusement of guests for the remainder of the party.

    • Susan and her sponsor conspire to have Susan debut at the same party as Faren.

    • Susan shows up in the same dress as Medena, and tries to make Medena look like a bully spoiling a poor debutante’s day, and while Medena turns the tables to make Susan look kind of childish and herself look magnanimous, she also ends up eating alone in a side room while the maids simplify her dress.

    • Faren asks permission to decorate her dress later with magic, Medena agrees.

    • The party host - a grandfatherly Marquis - introduces them both. Susan comes across as shy and innocent, Faren comes across as charismatic and engaging. Because of his mysterious mention in newspapers years ago, and his business-like approach, he ends up getting more attention than Susan.

    • Susan and her sponsor convince the Marquis to mix up the order - giving demonstrations before dancing. Susan will go first, Faren second.
    • Susan gives a kind of lame magic demonstration with some pink flower petals that flutter around and disappear quickly, while secretly using most of her power to cast a high level magic nullification barrier to prevent Faren from being able to do any magic for his demonstration.

    • Because Medena warned him Susan would try something during the demo, Faren prepared and is able to perform despite the barrier - he creates a planetarium-like effect of stars across the ceiling, which eventually swirl into a vortex coalesce on Medena’s dress, turning it into a a kind of fabric Milky Way.

    • Susan NEXT tries to use the custom of debutantes asking anyone they want for the first dance - and that person customarily not declining - to get Faren to be her debut partner, pretending to be too overwhelmed by all the strangers and wanting someone familiar. He manages to get out of it despite her crocodile tears nearly swaying everyone. She ends up asking the Marquis because she’s never had a ‘grandfather’, Faren asks Medena.

    • Faren gets his first dance with Medena, which has been determined to have since her debut.

    • Susan and the other count SEETHE and it’s an utter defeat for them.

    • Medena, seeing proof 'present' Susan is no different than the Susan from her previous timeline, resolves to stand in her way.

    Volume 2, Chapter 6: Debut

Okay, so the book chapters are LONG and have sections kind of chunked out with ‘***’ but they aren't numbered or named, so the titles/names below are totally arbitrary.
    • Medena dreams about a time a few days after she brought Faren home, when she went to get him for breakfast and he didn’t answer.
    • She entered his room to find him curled up in a ball moaning in pain (remember at this point he is still badly injured from the orphanage).
    • He didn’t want to tell anyone he was sick and in pain for fear of being a nuisance.
    • Medena promises him she will not kick him out even if he causes trouble, and assures him that this doesn’t count as trouble, and he’s not a nuisance, so to tell her honestly if he needs anything and when he’s not feeling well.
    • Faren thanks her, and she promises herself she’ll protect this kid from pain and suffering.
    • In the previous chapter, Medena promised to grant a request for Faren’s birthday, and he chose: “Every morning from now on, I want to wake Medena.” so in this chapter, he is doing so.
    • Medena gets over her surprise quickly and more or less is like, don’t you have better things to do, and Faren is more or less like, what could be better than this? In a way that goes totally over Medena’s head (despite the fact that he kisses her palm before he leaves, tucks her hair behind her ears, etc.)
    • She agrees to eat with him and kicks him out, he’s cheeky about it, and Medena idly reflects on a few things:
      • The fact that even though she is used to his radiant good looks, there are still times where Faren looks like moving art and leaves her kind of breathless.
      • That he was so cute and sweet as a kid and now is kind of cheeky/sneaky, but is still precious family to her (as evidence by the lack of boundaries lol)
      • She’s kind of ignored marriage and dating.
      • That the timeline for the events of the ‘original’ novel were about to begin.
    • A sponsored person’s debut is more like an exhibition of their talents / advertising for them (like, ‘hire this singer I sponsored to perform at your next party!’), and it’s customary for the sponsor to not be the one hosting it.
    • Medena tells Faren over breakfast that his debut will be at the birthday party of Marquis Halfon - she’d like for it to be someone higher ranked, but a Marquis is the best she can do given the attitude around magicians and the fact Faren is a commoner. She’s excited to see him show what he can do (and to see him in his debut outfit.)
    • Faren’s like cool, thanks, I don’t really care one way or another, I’m mostly excited to see Medena in a lovely dress, which is no doubt going to start a trend.
    • Medena had been planning to wear a modest dress (like she did when she was Susan’s sponsor) because Faren is supposed to be the star, but he wasn’t having any of that, and picked out a sky blue one for her.
    • Medena grumbles that he used to be so humble, he’s cocky now that he’s grown.
    • Faren grins and says even if he is, she won’t kick him out (in direct parallel to dream she had earlier where he was afraid she would kick him out).
    • Medena agrees but is like, but you shouldn’t just say that.
    • Faren ignores that and convinces her to go on a walk in the garden with him since it’s sunny and nice, and when Medena mentions it’s a good day to read in the sun, he promises to prepare a book for her.
    • Medena reflects that even if she calls him cocky or mean, it’s much nicer to see him being so than to remember the fearful way he was when he first came, and how she can’t imagine her daily life now without him.
Y’all the whiplash of ‘Faren-with-Medena’ and ‘Faren-with-anyone-else’ is SO REAL. We go from ‘But I like holding hands with Medena’ and ‘A smile as sweet as melting’ to kicking a coworker in the gut without any expression on his face because he was going to invite Medena to have a drink with him.
    • Faren meets with the other leaders of the Luces group - the magicians that supported Susan in the original novel and previous timeline, but who in this timeline, Medena and Faren sought out and won over first in the preceding chapters–Portia, Blint, and Snorri.
    • Blint boos Faren for being late, Faren flat out ignores him.
    • All three of the others congratulate / kind of given Faren shit over his debut (Blint wants to have a drink to celebrate, Portia’s jealous he gets to have one sponsored by Medena, Snorri just wants to tease him) then get into the meeting, which is just an update that things are moving ahead but not quickly.
    • After the meeting, Blint wheedles Faren to have a drink with him again jokingif he won’t, he’ll just go ask Medena - which earns him a kick in the stomach though Blint blocks it with magic.
    • Blint calls Medena a goddess, further earning Faren’s ire for being frivolous. Blint sighs that Medena has no idea the true nature of this guy.
    • Faren changes the subject, and Blint takes the opportunity to ask him about Medena’s intentions for their group.
    • Faren keeps quiet, but Blint presses, implying he knows she’s planning to overthrow the Empire.
      • “If we are all guessing right, should we actually call that person ‘Queen’ instead of ‘Goddess?’”
    • Faren deadpans that she should do whatever she wants to do, and whatever it is, he will help her do it.
    • Blint just laughs.
    • Medena gets a message from her hired spies saying that Susan’s patron, Count Talcio, has reached out to Marquis Halfon. As predicted, Susan is going to debut at the same event as Faren.
    • Medena reflects that Susan has been quiet since trying to ruin Medena’s debut, and if she continues to be quiet there will be no problem with Faren and Susan debuting together - but she isn’t going to trust in that.
    • She assures herself that if the opponent is Faren, he will be fine, but she will still warn him.
      • FWIW and purely IMO, there are a lot of little moments that suggest Medena doesn’t trust her own judgment when it comes to Susan (which is understandable, given the years she failed to judge her correctly) / doesn’t think she can ‘win’ against her. This was one of them.
    • Medena invites Faren for a walk, he takes her hand and they go to the terrace leading to the garden.
    • Medena notes that it’s habit to hold hands with Faren, but realizes he is now an adult, and tries to take her hand back.
    • Faren is thrilled when he hears her reason, but counters that he’d still like to hold hands, and Medena rolls with it, thinking they’re like family and if he’s not self conscious she won’t be either.
    • They discuss Susan, Faren doesn’t really seem bothered about the prospect of seeing her again.
    • Medena–somewhat hilariously considering the immediate prior context of Faren being kind of an asshole to the Luces magicians, Blint in particular–worries he’s too nice and gentle to eventually be emperor.
    • Faren is confident Susan can’t hurt him anymore, but if Medena says to be wary, he’ll be wary too - and if she touches a hair on Medena’s head, he’ll destroy her.
    • This results in a Medena going ‘Eh, what?’ and Faren going ‘What? Oh, hey what a pretty day for a walk in the garden’ moment. Medena gives it about two seconds thought before deciding she must have imagined things.
    • Day of the debut, Medena is in her bright blue dress (with lace, opals, and sapphires) and worried that it might be overkill to wear something so gorgeous when she isn’t a debutante.
    • Faren tells her she looks beautiful, and her concerns melt away as she’s reminded she doesn’t need to care about a socialite reputation. She notes he looks perfect.
    • Medena goes to take Faren’s hand, but he steps back, bows, and offers his arm instead, requesting formal permission to escort her.
    • Medena finds this a little funny just because they've known each other for so long, it's odd to hear formal requests.
    • Medena accepts, Faren says he is glad he can finally escort her - and that he will do so from now on.
      • He clearly means this is a very permanent/possessive way, and Medena is on a completely different, lighthearted wavelength like, oh yeah, it will be nice to have you escort me!
    • Faren and Medena arrive at Marquis Halfon’s party, are welcomed and give their gift to him, and Medena steels herself to face Susan.
    • Surprise! Susan is wearing a dress almost identical to Medena’s.
    • The marquis chuckles like ohohoho that must be in fashion these days, Medena agrees outloud it’s quite the coincidence, Faren murmurs that Medena’s concerns about Susan were warranted after all.
    • Susan’s sponsor brings her over to say hello, Susan is acting pitiful and shy and says she's afraid to make a mistake. The Marquis and her sponsor assure her.
    • Susan suddenly bursts into tears claiming she made a mistake with her clothes, and acts frightened of Medena, claiming Medena looks very angry.
    • Her sponsor chastises Medena for scaring a younger girl at her debut, and Susan turns to go outside, tearfully claiming that she will go change, which would make Medena look like a bully who made a debutante miss most of her debut for something as silly as fashion.
    • Medena manages to reverse the situation by more or less taking the suggestion of Susan's character to the extreme by treating her extremely gently like one would treat a toddler crying over something silly - this makes Susan look like a rather childish person.
    • Medena graciously offers to change her own dress to soothe the ‘little girl’s heart and hurt’, and asks to borrow a break room.
    • As she is led to one, she catches a glimpse of Susan’s anger before the pitiful mask returns.
    • Medena is both chilled and disappointed - she had hoped what happened at her own debut was just the sour grapes of Count Talcio (Susan's sponsor), and that Susan would live quietly in this life, content to be treated as a princess by the Count, but now she knows Susan hasn’t changed.
    • Faren is ticked off but held his tongue, for which Medena commends him. She goes to touch his cheek, hesitates because he’s now an adult, but he takes her hand and places it against his cheek anyway, grumbling that he’s angrier now at Susan than he ever was in the orphanage.
    • Medena thinks that’s somewhat skewed, since Susan’s actions resulted in him being beaten and injured, and this is just a dress. She thinks there is still a childish part of him after all, and that it’s quite lovable.
    • He asks how she will fix the dress - she’s going to remove a lot of the ruffles and decorations extras and simplify it.
    • He asks for permission to add a decoration, which Medena grants, and the maids enter.
    • Medena eats alone in the side room while everyone else attends the party.
    • The dress is stripped down to a simple blue gown. Medena asks Faren if he wants to add his decoration, and he says not yet - he will add it later.
She correctly guesses he intends to add it with magic, and expresses her trust and faith in him and his skills, which she knows are superior to Susan’s.
    • Faren sulks a bit that she’s treating him like a child, but still says he is happy they didn’t meet as adults, because he wouldn’t give up being supported by Medena, and escorts her back to the venue.
    or: "Susan's a snake, Faren's got skills"
    • The Marquis compliments Medena’s kindness, and Susan rushes over to ‘apologize’ (read: try again to make Medena look petty in front of the host)
    • Both pretend like they have only the lightest recollection of one another from those years ago in the orphanage, and Susan says it’s good to see Faren again, in a way that will make Faren look bad if he doesn’t essentially admit they were childhood friends.
    • Faren looks completely relaxed but his voice gives Medena chills as he slowly says he is indebted to Susan. Like Medena, he turns it back on Susan, praising her leadership skills but really digging at her manipulative nature and her shy act. On the surface it sounds like he’s putting himself down and praising Susan (much like how Susan does with Medena) but the digs are pretty clear, so Susan rushes to counter but the (oblivious) Marquis stops her, telling her there's no need to be humble.
    • Susan seems to realize the conversation is not going in her favor and returns to her sponsor, while Medena praises Faren for holding his own, but cautions that she believes Susan will pull something when it comes time for the debut demonstrations.
    • Medena has been holding back in case ‘Present’ Susan was different than the Susan she knew in her last life, but considers this a declaration of war, and resolves to stand in her way going forward.
    • Marquis gives a birthday speech, and first introduces Susan - who greets the crowd shly, plays her trembling, innocent, humble act, inciting everyone to want to protect her - and then Faren, who greets the crowd with confidence and expresses a wish to make connections, giving a businessman vibe.
    • Faren’s confidence, charisma, the fact his sponsor is a rising star businesswoman and he seems to have the same vibe, and the fact he is somewhat known from the bridge incident making the newspapers years back, means he ends up with quite the crowd coming to speak to him, compared to Susan, a relatively unknown entity. Susan is pissed.
    • Susan’s sponsor announces it’s time to show off her talent - this causes some fuss, because it typically happens after the first dance. Medena chastises him for being inconsiderate to the Marquis, but he got permission.
    • Susan will go first, then Faren, and then the dancing will start.
    • Medena is worried, but Faren reminds her of a lesson she taught him early on about sincerity, and tells her not to be concerned.
    • Susan takes the stage and looks rapturous- Medena realizes Susan craves attention, and suspects for the first time that the point of becoming the empress in the original and previous timelines was possible just to maxmize the attention she could get.
    • Susan demurs that she doesn’t have much talent, and it’s only a small bit of magic, but asks the crowd to enjoy, and then glows pink and that's all that happens for a bit.
    • Medena asks Faren what she’s doing, but he is serious and silent and concentrating fiercely on something, and tells her he will tell her in a minute.
    • Pink rose petals suddenly flutter everywhere through the crowd, but disappear when they’re touched.
    • People unfamiliar with magic smile and applaud, Medena worries it was way, way too simple of a demonstration - especially for someone who craves attention and has the amount of skill Susan has.
    • Faren tells her the reason the demo was simple is because Susan was using the bulk of her magic to secretly cast a high-level Magic Nullification Barrier, specifically to prevent Faren from being able to cast magic. Then, even if her magic display wasn’t impressive, it would still be better than Faren, who would be unable to do anything at all.
    • Medena panics a little and asks what she can do to help.
    • Faren tells her she already has by warning him Susan would pull something during the demonstration, so he could prepare.
    • Medena decides to trust him.
    • Faren asks the Marquis to turn off the lights.
    • Susan appears by Medena’s side, saying she knows SOME people use darkened surroundings to cheat but she is SURE Faren would NEVER do that.
    • White light begins to appear on Faren’s hands - he has broken the nullification barrier (to Susan’s brief expression of RAGE).
    • The lights begins to soar to the ceiling, creating the rippling, twinkling night sky that fills the room in a way that reminds Medena of a planetarium.
    • Everyone is in awe - Susan’s petals forgotten - and Medena again treats her like a little toddler, assuring Susan that her rose petals were also very pretty too (implication - for a beginner), which Susan’s not thrilled to hear.
    • Watching the stars, Medena remembers Faren was going to add decoration to her dress, and wonders if Susan’s interference meant he had to do this instead, and she’s a little sad, but still thinks its beautiful.
    • The stars turn into a swirling sort of vortex and descend to the audience, specifically on Medena's dress, leaving her twinkling and adorned in them.
    • The lights turn back on, and the stars continue to sprinkle and twinkle, and the simple nature of the dress allows them to shine.
    • Susan is bitter, Medena is touched, crowd's going crazy.
    • Marquis is delighted, announces it’s time for the first dance.
    • Debutantes, per custom, dance first, and have the opportunity to choose their own partners - a choice that is truly theirs, not their sponsor's - by offering them a rose. Declining a debutante’s request to be their dance partner is extremely taboo.
    • Faren has a red rose, Susan has a white one.
    • Marquis asks Susan who she will choose.
    • She’s back to her act, trembling and hesitating, and expresses her shyness that there are so many people she doesn’t know and it's just so overwhelming and intimidating…and then says what would make her happiest and most comfortable is to dance with her childhood friend, with whom she has debuted together - Faren.
    • Everyone is shocked! But decides it makes sense.
    • Medena thinks he will have to accept, but Faren immediately declines saying he would lose his right to choose his first dance partner, and she if she suddenly broke custom that way, it would reflect awkwardly on the Marquis who was hosting. While she is trying to think of a response, he tells her she can take her time to think of who she wants to choose, because he’s already decided who he will ask.
    • Susan bursts into tears and talks about how she doesn’t have a family and it led her to make a mistake.
    • This makes everyone feel bad, and the Marquis hedges, asking Faren if he can’t reconsider. Crowd sways in favor of Susan, with Faren looking cold-hearted.
    • Medena thinks they’re in trouble, but then Faren gently wipes away Susan’s tears, ands says he is also nervous, and when he thinks of the time in the orphanage, his heart also aches.
    • Crowd sways back in Faren's favor (in part because he looks like a prince in a painting wiping Susan's tears lol)
    • Faren brings his face close and murmurs something crowd can't hear and Susan’s eyes go wide.
    • Whatever it is rattles her enough to apologize, and she changes tactics and asks the Marquis to dance with her because she’s never had grandfather but he made her feel like she did, you know?
    • Faren, now free of the snake, goes straight to Medena and asks her to be his partner.
    • Medena is shocked because debutants don’t typically ask their sponsors, and he didn't say anything beforehand (prob because she would tell him not to do it) but as evidenced, declining isn’t done, so she accepts.
    • She intends to scold him a bit, but he tells her he resolved that his first dance would be with her way back during Medena’s debut, because he was frustrated he couldn’t be her debut partner.
    • She counters she still had her first dance with him (bc he snuck in from the balcony), but he wasn’t satisfied with that because it wasn’t official.
Medena doesn’t get it, Faren tells her she will find out some day, but he guesses it will be a secret for the time being, which is fine because he was prepared for a long game anyway.
    • Medena is fine with him having secrets because of their pact that he won’t betray her, and changes the topic, asking what he said to Susan to get her to back off.
    • Faren says he doesn’t care about Susan’s plans, but it’s unacceptable to touch Medena - he told her he’d reveal what really happened in the orphanage (which would tarnish both of their reputations and debuts)
    • Medena scolds him, he doesn’t care, he’s just happy he gets his first dance with her.
    • Susan’s sponsor comes over and blusters at Medena for awhile (Faren offers to punch him) and reminds her of the upcoming Imperial Hunt, which clearly has significance for Medena.
    • Medena resolves that in the end, the ‘winners’ (this is a reference to opening prologue quote that history is written by the winners) this time will be Medena and Faren, not Talcio and Susan.
    • Super short - party goes late into the night with Faren getting lots of attention and invitations and, Talcio and Susan slinking out in annoyance while Medena and Faren are surrounded by admirers.
    • Outside, Talcio is pissed looking at the stars because it reminds him of Faren’s magic.
    • Susan apologizes for not showing more impressive skills.
    • Talcio assures her it isn’t her fault, it’s Medena’s for being a horrible person.
    • Susan agrees, and brings up the hunt.
    • Talcio wonders why such a soft-hearted girl would want to go since animals will get hurt, but Susan insists she has to go.
    • Talcio acquiesces, and says that she should get some rest when they get back.
    • Susan bitterly watches the stars, before the bitter expression vanishes.

I do use MTL, so I can't promise these are accurate! I try to use a few different models to improve readability, but, readability and accuracy are very different.

“Anyway, I’ll eat with you, so go ahead first. I'll get ready and follow."

    “Alright, take your time.”

“You woke me up early and then told me to take my time?”

As Medena glared, Faren took her hand in his and rubbed it against his cheek, then gently kissed the palm of her hand and stood up.

“I don’t want to be bored alone. Well then, see you later.”

Faren was now 18 and had reached the age of majority, and Medena was now 23. In the atmosphere of the Aluro Empire, Medena was at an age where it wouldn’t have been strange for her to already be married. She had no interest in marriage or dating, and had just stopped paying attention to focus on raising Faren, whom she was sponsoring.

'I did receive several marriage proposals...…. hmmm…come to think of it, those talks spontaneously disappeared.'

Faren took Medena's hand as a matter of course and walked to the terrace leading to the garden. Since childhood, walking hand-in-hand with him had been something of a natural habit.

'...... but come to think of it, Faren is an adult now.’

Since she had seen him since he was a child, she felt that he was still only a young boy, but in fact, may have been a lack of moderation. The clear awareness of being a debutante, a rite of passage to be recognized as an adult, led her to this thought. As soon as she stepped out onto the terrace, she surreptitiously pulled her hand out of Farren's grasp. from Faren.

    “What’s the matter?”

“Come to think of it, Faren, you are an adult now. I think this kind of thing is only for children."

As soon as he heard Medena's words, Faren smiled sweetly as if melting. “…Do you think of me as an adult now?”

    "Yes? You’re already old enough…”

"I’m glad." But Faren didn't seem to heed the earlier conversation at all. Rather, he firmly caught and clasped Medena's hand, folding and interlocking their fingers together. “But I like to hold hands with Medena. So I’ll keep holding it.”

He didn't seem to be very conscious of the hand holding.

'Well, we’re like family. There's nothing to be self-concious of.'

Faren had been with her since they were young. She though the would naturally distance himself from her as they got older, but his attitude never changed. She felt then that she would be disappointed if he said he was too old now. Medena shrugged, a bit embarrassed, and clasped his hand.

Faren asked her in a gentle voice. “So what did you want to talk about?”

Now, only Faren and Blint remain in the executive room. Faren ignored Blint, grabbed the papers, and tried to leave.

“Hey, hey, Faren. Isn’t it lonely to just leave like that?”

    “....What?”

“How about a drink later? This brother is buying.”

    “I don't remember having a brother like you, and I don't drink.”

“This group of merchants is so dreary. I don’t have a single colleague who drinks alcohol with me.

“A beer belly will soon emerge.”

    "The Raugels don't gain weight!"

"Then you'll be the first rare case."

The casual exchange of jokes gave the appearance of a friendlier atmosphere than before.

Of course, they would firmly deny it was so.

My unsolicited two cents - I originally wrinkled my nose at the blood pact being made with a kid, but after reading the chapter it happens in, I have less of a problem with it (not the same as 'I don’t have a problem', just, 'less of one'). Mostly because, imo, the text makes it pretty clear:

    a) This is still fairly shortly after the regression - everything that happened is still very fresh and present for Medena and she is wigged by it. Past and current timeline Susan-Medena interactions read with an absolute horror movie undercurrent, and Medena's decapitation nightmares are fairly stark. It's not just the gruesome death - it's the gruesome death at the hands of someone she trusted, and who has made her unable to completely trust herself, since she was so completely fooled. I'll give an allowance to human nature here - we make stupid, selfish decisions when we're scared, and Medena is definitely painted a bit in that brush of constant low-grade anxiety that only starts to ease up after the pact. It made me think of lifeguard training, where they warn you how someone who is drowning may push you underwater even when you're trying to save them, because they're operating on a survival override state.

    b) She is aware that she’s giving her own fear precedence over some of Faren’s agency, and feels guilty about it, and doesn’t forget it.

    c) She seems to be intentional about making it minimally invasive / only bound to the absolute minimum necessary. Their pact doesn’t demand he protect, help, or even defend her, just that he not break promises. (He’s the one who throws in the stay-by-my-side clause and keeps trying to promise more!) After the covenant is in effect, the promise she asks him to make is to never directly or indirectly physically harm her or intentionally damage her business dealings. That's not exactly high stakes stuff! She even turns him down when he tries to promise more.

(although he does end up promising not to kill anyone without her permission which turns out to be VERY FORTUNATE for several side characters in later chapters.)

    d) She generally doesn't even notice anything except that he's a sweet and very smart kid until the timeskip to adulthood where she notes he's handsome and that's the extent of it. I haven't gotten to a point where there's anything mutual yet, but 18/23 isn't the worst I've seen.

....having once been a college freshman who dated her teaching assistant (the semester after he was no longer my TA, to be clear) I can say it's not ideal, but it's not the worst I've seen.
