Okay I've completed reading this today. The first half felt a bit frustrating a depressing. But then- it was all very wholesome!! Like a plot twist! He is so cute always being so considerate of her!
Done reading this and let me first say this is the same author who wrote "The Mistress Runs Away" and "Flowers May Wither but You Remain". If you guys have idea about those series you might know author doesn't have the best ML or FLs, however this one wasn't bad. The story is enemy to lover trope. ML is of course jerk at some points but not intolerable. Unlike author's other MLs, this one has actual reason to be a jerk. His possessive acts can be annoying alot but story handles it nicely later on. Story at start is really boring with bad pacing but eventually gets good and ML is really devoted to FL even when sometimes his thoughts are contrary. As for FL, she is pretty good too. She is a kind FL and knows how to handle herself and ML perfectly. Previous 2 work of author made me skeptical but this had really good rating in ridi and author got better at romance too. Reading all 3 of her stories, it seems they are heavily inpired by Jane Eyre. Would be posting spoilers soon.
Spoiler: Characters Roxana: Female Lead Curtis: Male lead Frey: Curtis younger sister Viscount Otis: King's illegitimate son Duke Enoch: Roxana's ex fiance Spoiler: The beginning ML and FL met as a child, they were 11 and 13 back then I think. FL was on an island with her mother, hiding away from her father. ML was also visiting the same island. One day, FL goes out on the beach and almost drown but ML saves her. She remembers his gray eyes and black hair and both became each other's first love. ML's father is a marquis and FL's father is extremely greedy man. Sometime later, after the beach incident, ML's estate is invaded by FL's father under King's command. FL's dad prepared false evidence to frame ML's family and overthrow them. He burns down every member of his family and feed the corpses to the dogs. FL believed ML died too and it made her sad. But one of ML's butler took his place and helped ML escape along with his younger sister. FL's dad then take over Marquis territory and during his reign he is known as the worst lord. He started imposing heavy taxes, would not care for starving and sick citizens. If someone tried to start a protest or is starving, he would have them executed. FL cannot see people suffering, so she tries in her own way to help them. Sometimes preparing medicines or ration for needy but she eventually gets halted by Marquis and has to stay in the house. FL during this time gets engaged to a Duke Enoch. The Duke is a well known member in the society and has direct ties with the royal family of nearby kingdom. He is the brother of Princess in that kingdom. But Duke doesn't like FL at all. Everyone loathe FL's Dad cuz of his tyranny and this is why FL also receive hate from everyone in the empire. They believe she is greedy like father. Enoch doesn't even meet FL and just makes it clear to not expect anything from him. Almost 10 years later, the Duke's territory gets invaded by ML. FL's maid, Mary, ask FL to escape via secret passage but FL says she won't and instead help Mary escape. However, Mary turns out to be traitor and she opens the main gates of the territory to let ML's army in. Mary doesn't hate FL but she is against her dad. During the whole Chaos, her dad and his allies die. Leyla doesn't know at this point that ML is the one who attacked them so when she saw him standing in front of her, she is surprised cuz she thought he was dead. However, he lived and now she is paying for father's sins too. ML's order was to kill every member of Marquis' family, however, he spares her. He tells her that he will send her to convent instead and if she try to run away she will be killed. He tells her he would rather like that she lived as nobody in some shabby convent and be miserable there. Leyla agrees but she begs him to not take any of her staff in as serfs. Instead, let them have all the rights like other citizens. In return, she will live like a dead woman in the shabby convent and serve people. So after this deal, she leaves and stay in the convent for 2 years. Only few people around ML knew that Roxana was still alive, everyone else in the empire including her fiance believed she is dead.
Spoiler: FL and ML meeting again The convent FL lives in outside ML's territory but not much far. This place only has 3 nuns and a head nun. During her stay FL has been helping the poor citizens usully with her medicinal knowledge. However, she hasn't taken life oaths yet (the oath to be full fledged nun). She has already proven capable but head nun won't accept her vows yet. One day she goes to treat some children in the village. There is some serious disease spreading which mainly only affect children. The situation is worse so these kids are taken inside convent for treatment. But they don't have good facilities so it takes very long to trear children. Villagers get anxious waiting and think all these nuns are doing some witchcraft and will eventually kill their children. So they attack the convent. Fl try to reason with them and tell it is serious disease. They think she is lying cuz none of the nuns got infected. They were not infected cuz all 4 of them once suffered from similar disease and it doesn't occus twice. The villagers don't listen to any excuses. In the end FL ask them to give them 1 week and they will heal the kids fully. She also demands that all people attacked them properly apologize if she got the kids healed in a week. They agree. FL then prepare to leave convent and seek ML's help. Doing this means she is breaking her oath but the situation is very dire, the disease is spreading and may reach ML's state too. He wants proper medical facilities which ML can provide. She cannot go directly, so she seeks help from Mary, the maid. She lives nearby. On seeing FL she feels guilty and readily accept to help her. With the help of Mary's husband, she is smuggled in ML's territory in carriage. They are stopped on the way for inspection by FL's ex fiance. She deals with him by making up some lies then he let's FL go further. Inside the mansion, only butler figure out who she is, he takes FL to a room to wait for ML. He is out somewhere. While waiting, ML's sister, Frey, rush into the room screaming and running away from her maids. The maids want to give her medicines but she always protest. Frey is also blind, during the massacre of her family she was only 5 and witnessed everyone including her parents getting murdered. She was already of weak health but this incident shocked her so much that she becomes blind due to trauma. Frey believes all the maids are making fun of her for her weakness and she hates depending on them so she is always wild and protesting. FL helps Frey to hide while everyone looks for her. FL sends them away when they ask her if she saw Frey. After that she helps Frey calm down and eventually talking to her, she falls asleep in FL's arms. Sometime later ML arrive and hears about the commotion Frey made, they all figure out Frey might be with FL and rush to her. ML is annoyed by thought of his sis alone with FL. Cuz he thinks she would be like her father and do something to her so he is prepared to take out his sword to warn her. But he witness FL soothing Frey, he tries to approach his sis but the sis doesn't let Roxana go. Instead she tells ML to give her a minute while she handles Frey. He is more irritated by this but remains quiet. He doesn't like her calm attitude cuz it makes him feel multiple emotions at the same time calm, shock, betrayal, longing. Even with a sword in front of her she doesn't flinch a muscle. Both of them just stare at each other while Frey fall asleep. The butler nearby interrupt them cuz it is the first time Frey slept without drugs. Spoiler: ML hiring FL in his mansion ML has already heard about situation of the village from butler. So he agrees to help FL, however he tells her that in exchange she cannot go back to convent. Roxana is stubborn and responsible whenever it comes to helping other so she agrees to his term in exchange he will help the people. Whenever ML is alone with FL, he feels faint emotions and it gently seps into his heart. He thinks about memories when they were kids, he used to call Roxana a mermaid and she wished that they can both build a castle under the sea and leave the land, he remembers her telling him she is likes and even loves him. But these memories suddenly wash away the moment he remember her family burning down and dying. Him desperately trying to escape along with his 5 year old sister. Roxana thinks that ML might want to kill her. So she bravely looks at him and says kill her but in exchange keep his promise. The new one and previous one. He is already bothered by strange sensation when he is around her and then seeing her speak. He gets up approach her, grabbing her by chin. Their faces are close and nose touching. Roxana tries to shake him off but he hold her there staring at her. Eventually he strokes her ear and grab her by the neck before suddenly biting down on her neck. She gasps and push away ML on feeling the pain. He just grins at her. When she ask about his sis blindness he explains what happened. Roxana feels guilty and turns pale. He tells her how he could have died in some battlefield and her 5 year old sis could have been sold to brothel. So he tells Roxana, he won't be giving her easy death. She will die when he wants, the way he wants. He tells her that she will stay here as a maid for Frey and he will make sure she is not happy. He doesn't want her to be happy. He remembers once he visited convent 2 years ago, thinking Roxana would be miserable and her ugly side would show up. But he just found her calm and composed which pissed him off and he left. He wants to do anything to make her ugly, selfish side to come out so he can erase the memory of girl in his mind. After this, ML provide things to village as promised and the villagers attacked them also apologize.
Spoiler Roxana bids goodbye to all the nuns. She especially emotional for leaving head nun. Cuz they have been very close and she had been like a mother to Roxana. ML is eaiting for him nearby when she leaves and they go back together. On the way, their carriage get stuck on the road and while waiting for it to get fixed Roxana stands near bushes, she steps back a bit, stumble and fall down which sprains her foot. Curtis immediately rush to her calling out her name, he grabs her feet and immediately inspect it. Realizing what he has done, he immediately let go, says some cold words and go back to carriage. She start settling in the mansion as maid few days later. At first she is regular maid but then she is given room near Frey and previous maid is dismissed and starts working in kitchen. Most of the staff likes Roxana, with exception the biggest one being another maid named Lizzie. She is from some fallen noble house so she doesn't like how Roxana climbed ranks so fast. She antagonize her like spilling her cleaning bucket all over the floor and some other childish stuff but Roxana handles her calmly by telling her to clean up the mess she made. Handling Frey is harder than she thought. Frey doesn't even remember the night Roxana calmed her down and says she doesn't know who she is. Frey is quite abusive toward her maids complaining about or anything they do. The first day she is tasked to handle Frey, the girl throws away hot food which falls on a maid nearby. This food burns her leg badly but Frey keeps on whinning about other stuff. She even orders Roxana to do something but Roxana instead of listening to Frey starts treatment of the maid that got burned. She does a quick homemade first aid by applying some mashed potato on her leg and wrapping it. Frey stays quiet when all this happens but find it disrespectful. When other maid leave, Frey scold Roxana telling her that she can kick her out anytime she wants, her brother would do it. She says that if Roxana wants to be forgiven she should get down on her knees apologize and kiss her feet. Roxana only apologize to her saying that she couldn't leave injured maid alone. She clearly tells she isn't kissing her feet. Instead, she manage to make Frey guilty for her earlier outburst. They talk a little more during which Roxana mentions her parents, her past life and how her parents died. Frey relate to her on dead parents thing and eventually forgives Roxana. At this point, Frey has no idea she is the daughter of guy who killed her parents. One day ML and FL are alone, during this ML mocks FL saying that she can now take off her fake mask. It is just too of them let her ugly side show but she stays calm. FL manage to stay kind and calm because her mother once told her that when you get angry on someone try seeing things from their angle. She also have habit of remember good part about people whenever something bad happened. ML truly wish she can be selfish and wicked like her father. When his provoking doesn't work, he mentions a butler who used to work for FL's family. This butler almost kileld FL during the raid cuz he thought FL is a traitor. ML also mentions Mary and says that FL must have wanted to kill Mary when she saw her living freely while she is serving in convent. But FL tells him she isn't upset, she says yes that butler tried to kill him but at that moment he was overcome with his anger, she knew this butler from childhood and he used to bring him gifts, smile at her and take care of her like a daughter so she holds no grudge. Then she says, Mary also has been with her whole life and before the attack she did try to help her. ML is bothered by FL's saint like attitude. He cannot understand her and is fed up with this behavior. He thinks she of all people should not act like she understand poor miserable people. He then tells if she ever talked about sophistication again in front of him, he will pull out her tongue. ML slowly notice FL's progress. She manages to handle Frey perfectly. One day, she even manages to make Frey eat properly. She was again whinning about breakfast so FL made a simple stew that she had been eating in convent. Frey enjoys this stew. Turns out, when ML and Frey were on the run, he left her in convent and the head nun took care of Frey for ML. During this time, ML would join gypsies for some time and after that he would go different mercenary groups. Slowly, he managed to prove himself a worthy soldier and loyal to king. Finally, when ready he attacked FL's family and got his revenge. ML also hates his relatives cuz none of them took them in despite always using their family assets when they were rich, he hates how they all turned their back on him when they were poor and useless. ML is pretty impressed by Roxana after the whole breakfast thing but he is still cautious that she might be using Frey so he keeps his guards up. After the breakfast thing, a festival takes place in ML's territory. Numerous gypsies arrive in this festival. ML has given order none of the gypsy enter beyond the gates except for one with white mask. FL is also out enjoying the event with two maids she befriended Alice and Kathy. She ends up separating running into gypsy with white mask. The gypsy drops the mask and FL picks it up. One of the staff mistake FL for gypsy and takes her to meet ML but she has no idea what is happening or why staff is acting like this so she waits. ML approach from behind, when she hears him she gets scared and ends up wearing the mask. ML hugs her and says "grandmother" and is apologizing to her. Apparently, the gypsy has been like a grandmother to him but something happened due to which she has stopped talking to him and is angry. This grandmother's name is Tessa. Just remember her, she will show up again. FL is also confused by ML's considerate act cuz his voice is gentle and sweet. All she had heard so far is cold and biting words. She somehow manage to escape from this encounter without raising suspicion and go back to her room thinking about what just happened.
Imagine if she told him that it's fine to cut her tongue off because she'll still be kind either way. At the last part, she gets killed off by someone with dignity and everyone grieves her death and ML regrets doing horrible things to her. She even gets a big grave for herself in honor. I like happy ending but I don't mind bittersweet ends.
