Discussion What is your biggest ick in a novel?

I have always had this ick when reading novels or book, that is, modern references. A Modern person, like Mark Zuckerberg. Like it's okay if they used historical figures. But that's not the worst yet. Using modern books or story references. Myths or Historical facts are okay. But like Harry Potter?? (complaining from here) I was reading a novel (quick transmigration) It's one of my favourite. It has my favourite tags like seme mc, scums and angst, and cute mls(they might be the same person like other qt but we'll see) I was enjoying it and they just decided to add an arc with Snape and Voldemort. Like he became voldemort and had to win over Snape like tf girl. What were you thinking??? Now It's on hold because I can't continue it ahhhh

 

That is very weird... but on the other hand... this is average for Harry Potter fanfiction... there's some weird stuff going on there...
Anyhow, modern references in novels often feel kind of weird to me, cause it'll be a novel with fantasy tropes and very unrealistic stuff and then they suddenly put Jeff Bezos in there for some reason! I feel like if a novel isn't 100% realistic, it shouldn't put real people like those in there. I mean, it just feels kinda weird to be putting the real person in there and turning them into a fictional character? Especially since the author won't really know the people they're writing about so it'll just be some 2D character with the same name... Idk it's really just an opinion.
Also if the characters are put in a novel like Harry Potter, I'll really just think it's funny. Though if it's not done very well it will feel like the characters are acting very OOC and just weird. Cause like, you've read the novels yourself and you'll be like, 'there's no way this would ever happen and they wouldn't respond like that at all' and that would totally ruin the immersion and fun of it. Also a scenario where Snape and Voldemort have to get in a relationship feels like it would definitely fall in that category! I mean what the hell

 

It irks me when characters do f**ked up stuff and the story glosses over it or continues to present them in a good light, and we're supposed to believe that character is so very nice or he suffered so much that what he did doesn't matter.

depends on how it was done, there's no bad writing/tropes, just bad writers. Depends on how the 'irk' was introduced, and how it will be used. I have things I don't enjoy reading but they are good. For example Moonlight sculptor. I hate it and everyone loves it.

 

Lol what? Yeah, that'd be cringe. I'd still clench my teeth and read it tho. A major ick for me is rape. Aphrodisiac rape. Alcohol rape. Memory loss. Running away while pregnant due to a misunderstanding. Lack of communication (ticks me off). Rape victim becomes lover. Stockholm syndrome. Abusive ML. SM (just not my thing). ABO (not really ick, just meh). Bi-sex shou (meaning the character has both vag and dick), it's always used as a fetish porn trope. Father ML and son/daughter MC, major ick. Generational age gaps. Incest in general.

I reaaaally hate White Lotus character. Imagine if you read a story about parents beating their child with iron rod and that child screamed at them in anger, then a fcking white lotus popped up and said: "Omg don't be rude to your parents... no matter how bad they're but they're still your parents..." then a bunch of dog licking guys agreed to her with open arms. I was like, tf bro??? Idk why authors write that kind of character other than pulling readers' hatred and disgust.

 

I get the ick from the pregnancy trope. Like, why do we have to add kids in? They make everything so much more stressful than it has to be. If I want a romance story, I want it to be between two people, cause three’s a crowd

 

MC who thinks running away is the answer and are compulsive liars then are scared to confess because of the repercussions. Like you expect your partner to love you unconditionally when you can't even be honest, it's the foundation of a relationship. "Did you eat?"
"Yes" (but not really)
"Who did you meet?"
"No one/just my friend"(but actually the other person who liked them but won't tell their partner so they won't get upset, already sounding like a cheater)
You build trust but then mc act like the victim all the time, "they won't love me if I say confess". Well f u if this was the other way around I know you'll run away with out even finding out the truth.

MCs who don't confront their partners and ask for the truth or have a discussion. They jump to conclusions and run. They will immediately believe someone who clearly hate their partner(Yes, I'm looking at you "In the Private Room)

I avoid troupes like that so the minute there is running away or lying in both side I drop it like it's hot immediately.

 

I would have to say, harem(s). Especially when the girls have never even consented to being in that kind of relationship and just have no personality nor dynamic between them and the MC. The girls' only trait are their looks and mammary glans. Other than that, I have no issue as someone who has high tolerance to most tropes.

 

There are many things that really bother me about Transmigration stories.
Like, how warped everyone's perception of MC are because they are actually judging another person and how that may lead to conflict.
Or, how MC may give a fuck about certain people because they are strangers to him now. Like MC's parents jus died? He just lost the one he loved to another man? Who cares.
Or how creepy is (once you think about it) the original owner's friends and family liking how he changed after the transmigration.

In short words, i dislike the impersonation aspect of transmigration.

Of course, these things aren't a problem in cases where pretty much everyone MC interacts didn't know him or knew him just a little before he transgressed like in Taming the Villainesses, or in cases where the original personality and memories weren't totally overwritten.

I can't stand mpregs, so basically I hate all ABOs. It's just basically sexism - author hate females so much they just delete females in their work.

 

Jade beauties can be stored in the dantian. While inactive, they don't experience the passage of time and receive a huge cultivation bonus. And as long as the MC doesn't activate 2 conflicting beauties at the same time, there shouldn't be any drama.

OH MY GOOODNESSSS, authors being insensitive to sexual assault. YOUR CHARACTER IS NOT THAT BADASS YOU SWEAR THEY ARE PLEASE SIT DOWN AND THINK ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING!! Read a story where the Novel protag is supposed to be this badass #girlboss who transmigrates to ruin the female leads life in every world AND IT ALWAYS ENDED WITH RAPE??? Once she literally ignored a side character getting gang raped ONLY BECAUSE SHE WAS THE FEMALE LEADS FOLLOWER??? In every transmigrated world it ended with the FL villainized and getting raped by somebody or something and the Protag was just this badass manipulative hot girl who knows how to fight and is a bad bitch with her powerful strong bf. BFFR, YOU WHAT THAT MEANS?? BE FUCKING FOR REAL
