Discussion Does being a slave matter if your owner is giving you much freedom?

Let's say you're a slave, but you're pretty much allowed to do anything you want. You have an owner on paper but they don't care or even remember you.

Would it bother you that you're a slave?

 

maybe someone secretly uses the fact that you are a slave to harass your owner and/or you!!

 

Would I even still be considered a slave if I am free to do whatever I want?

 

Yes, you were trafficked and bought but was taken by a good owner. If you escape and get caught, you'll be back to being sold and might meet horrible circumstances!

Yes. Put it simply that's not real freedom, you're still someone's property. There's a differing power dynamic between you and a free person. You're subject to their whims, if they have a change of mood you would suffer. Etc.

Hmm, but I wouldn't escape from a good owner. I guess there is a possibility that I would get abducted, but the possibility of such thing happening even if I am not a slave is about the same.

IRL answer: As a white bread American, I don’t know that it feels right for me to even try to answer this question. I don’t think any of my ancestors had slaves, although I don’t know, as there was one line of my family that could have been around long enough to do so, but I just feel like… is it fair for me to even consider this hypothetical question when so many alive in my country today are still being affected by the injustices of slavery back then and racism even now? I did actually ponder an answer before I wrote this, but then I realized that it probably wasn’t fair of me to do so, and felt bad. I know that not everyone here is going to have the same problem as me, and that’s okay, but my final answer is: slavery is bad.
