OpenOffice is perhaps not even a particularly good alternative to Microsoft Office, so, honestly, you weren't really making great use of your freeware options.

You'd have been better off using Google Docs or Microsoft's own Office Online, more than anything.

If you really wanted to use OpenOffice, though, you'd have still been better off using LibreOffice, which was forked from OpenOffice a long time ago and has less compatibility issues.

But, hey, you didn't waste your money. At least in my opinion, Microsoft Office truly is the best software suite for everything it covers. It might have freeware competitors, but they're consistently second in the race.
