Sounds literally unrelated to anything I've tagged above (not to mention the second chance cliché plot I don't want to ever read again) + the reviewers convinced me not to even give it a chance.

This guy got me to read many gems though, I will trust him if he answers.

You could try Nightfall, from the same author as Ze Tian Ji. I also liked Chronicles of Primordial Wars, sadly, the latter is no longer being translated. If you don't mind reading mage novels, When A Mage Revolts has a great beginning, though it tapers off a bit afterwards.
