Eh, "necessary" is a empty word in itself if without a specified context, translating a novel only makes you necessary to people that care about that novel getting translated, and even then only if it is in a way they are happy with.

I am not necessary to the people who read the novel. I am necessary because I am doing something instead of sitting on my ass. I am very replaceable, I am not necessary to readers..I am not so narcissistic to think that.

But my whole point isn't that you are or aren't narcisistic but rather that you have not specified what you are necessary FOR by "doing something".
Everyone is necessary for something, and equally unnecessary for something else.
