Hey. I'm more aware of things than you think. Have you even seen an electric trombone? Go do some research!

Why is there a plunger looking thing beside the trombone?

The plunger mute is often used to distort the sound coming out of the bell, or opening end, of the instrument. Mainly for jazzy pieces, a plunger mute is just the right shape for the circular bell and can be manipulated kind of like a whammy bar on a guitar.

Other popular mutes would be the hat mute, the cup mute, and even your own hand. However, each has its own tone quality so it is often up to the performer on what they wish to use

Of course. Lubrication is a key part of making sure everything goes smoothly. *no joke*

No, rubbing it too hard may cause it may dent the slide. I say lightly grease it and just lightly move the slide up and down repeatedly.

I see, so you need to make sure it is well lubricated, before doing any maintenance on your instrument.
Do you ever let anyone else do that?

Nope. Have you been to a bowling alley? They each have their own way of oiling the lanes. Likewise, players have different ways of greasing their slides. I tend to like really greasing it up, while others may just want to make sure theirs is just wet enough to slide without scratching the tubing.
