Conversations have a flow. Answers/comments don't come out of no where. Usually, they are invited.

If you get stumped on something someone says, reflect on how it relates to what you just said. That can go a step further as you reflect on what was said before then.

The reverse can also be done. Follow the flow of the conversation and you can more or less predict what the other person will say.

The most important thing is to not panic. Just admit to yourself that it confused you and think about why that was said.
