Although celebrated on 25 of december, the day Jesus was born is a mystery (not the 25 of december), Therefore, in my opnion, just like how christians did, japanese culture might not be wrong in adapting christmas to go along with their customs (the day is an event and is celebrated but technically it is not the birthday of Jesus)

It's interesting how even though a lot of countries aren't exactly Christian, they still observe the holiday and some others take it as a public holiday. I think if one were not Christian, the exact details of Christ's birthday will fly over them hence, the widespread misconception of that.
