    I'm pretty sure I live in one of the only places on earth other than Antarctica that doesn't have rats, so I dont think killing all the rats is a simple problem...

    It is treatable, though. I think a handful of people still get the bubonic plague in the American south-west due to prairie dogs each year. But deaths are rare, since we know how to treat it.
