Because they are Americans??

Because american football is more popular in the united states compared to soccer.
To differentiate between them I use the spanish futbol in text

It's like when we talk about chips, you English say crisps

@Archaic pickle yes I get that. You say this and we say that. But from arguments I’ve seen rather than accept we call it different things the American always insist it’s called soccer. Despite people pointing out that originally it was called football.

Maybe. I was just reading up on the names football and soccer. It’s kinda funny. Dunno how true it is but what I read says Americans took elements of football and rugby and invented their own sport called gridiron football. Which later became known as football.

And soccer is the nickname of football which comes from the name association football. The football association in America got renamed to the soccer association~

American football is called that because the ball is a foot long. The name “soccer” originally came from the British, actually.

I know. The nickname was taken from association > assoccer > soccer. Soccer was called football in America. But when they invented their new sport that became football and football became soccer.

Well that’s the brief history I saw. Could be wrong for all I know lol~
