Maybe that's why so many wuxia/martial arts webnovels are so trash, where the mc is ruthless in everything and not repaying people who helped the mc in the past even though the mc is super op with lots of resources.

For manga at least, a lot of the current popular manga have mcs that do kill their enemies more frequently now. A lot of it has to do with people getting tired of the boyscout protag you generally get. Then tie in the fact that a lot of these over-the-top manga have some of the better art these days it leads to people to want more.

I like ones where it's a mixture of both, Ruthless when needed, Lenient when needed, and repaying kindness with kindness. I also don't like boyscout mc's too much~

Same sentiment with the ruthless when needed and lenient when needed part. That's why Rimuru is my fav male protagonist
